An interesting factoid:

According to a site called Advanced NFL Stats, before the snap to Mesko, the Patriots had about a 33% chance of winning the game.

After that beauty of a punt—which the Ravens still recovered—the Patriots' chances of winning had increased to 54%.

As the site notes, it's incredibly rare for a swing that large in the absence of a turnover.

Advanced NFL Stats: Punt of the Year

The closing paragraph puts Mesko's performance YTD in perspective.

On a side note, I noticed that in more than one of the write-ups of the punt, it was described as a big turn-around moment for Mesko. One article noted that he had been struggling, ranked only 24th in the league in net punt distance. This is silly. Mesko plays on a team with a very good offense, so his punts are going to tend to be from near midfield or better. Those kinds of punts are almost always shorter than punts from deeper in a team’s own territory due to the short field. Rankings punters by net distance without considering where he’s punting from is nearly meaningless.

I'm going to go back through the game logs to see if this is in fact the case.

BB was criticized for drafting Gostkowski and Zoltak. With that pair, Tate and Welker returning kicks, our coverage units. I think we have the best special teams in football.

Only 2 of 16 punts from beyond New England's 40 so far this season.

I wonder what last happened back when BB had excellent STs?

I'd like to see more consistency out of the return game. Tate clearly has the explosion to take one the distance, but aside from those two returns it feels like we're starting inside the 25 a lot (on returnable kicks of course, not touchbacks).

Cincinnati

Own 30 (43 yds/net 43 yds)

NY Jets (Avg. 48.7/Net 45)

1 - Own 42 (52/net 52) less the 15 yard penalty on Arrington
2 - Own 21 (56/net 49)
3 - Own 29 (38/net 34)

Buffalo (Avg. 37.7/net 34.7)

1 - Own 14 (33/net 33)
2 - Own 30 (44/net 41)
3 - Own 35 (36/net 30)

Miami (Avg. 41/Net 33.3)

1 - Own 17 (60/net 47)
2 - Own 38 (39/net 29)
3 - Miami 42 (24/net 24)

Baltimore (Avg. 47/net 47.2)

1 - Own 24 (54/net 54)
2 - Balt 47 (38/net 38)
3 - Own 13 (46/net 46)
4- Own 16 (39/net 39)
5 - Own 32 (40/net 31)
6 - Own 16 (65/net 65)

Only two have been in the opponent's territory, of those in our own territory only one has been past the 40.

I think the most we can say is that he is inconsistent. I think our return teams have done a good job at limiting the return yards.

They modified Mesko's steps to the ball and they took 1 out........... He is still adjusting......

that boomer of a punt was muffed and he had to act quickly (it was bobbled/dropped_

or did you forget?

It was a pretty impressive punt. Equally impressive was his handling of the horrible snap on the punt before. He had about .5 seconds to gather that and punt it, and he did it. If he doesn't gather that ball, the Pat's win percentage goes down to about 1 percent. It's actually probably game over.

Interesting game. It's not common when two roughly even opponents face each other in the NFL for the team in the turnover minus department to prevail. We were -2, although one was at the end of the game so doesn't really count. Still, you could make the case that the punt neutralized the turnover.

I mentioned this before in the context of FGs but for some reason LS Ingrham has been wild on his snaps this year. WTF? The Emperor of Space's quick hands saved several balls from sailing into enemy hands. Dunno what the problem is.

If they win a Superbowl that punt may be the reason for it.

Yes, our long snapper is apparently mired in the throes of a sophomore slump. :wha:

That punt was undoubtedly, the play of the game.

Maybe they should ditch him before he cost the pats a game. One bad snap and your season could be over
