Why is Welker returning punts?

Some people need to just watch another sport.

PR is very important. Edelman got clocked good so I don't know when he can do it again. Welker has the quickness to excel at punt returns and he's not above playing ST.

I believe Hester stopped returning kicks when he started playing wide out. I think Daniel Manning returns kicks for the bears.

Hester does it.

No.

He doesn't.

When they put him in the WR role, they scaled back on his returning duties. It wasn't until recently when they decided to put him back into KR mode and scale back on how many snaps he takes at WR.

That is the answer^^^^^^

So how many kick returns has Hester had this year?

Welker was put in to return punts when Edelman got hurt. Though I agree it is scary seeing him return punts, I think Belichick wanted someone sure-handed to field punts with the wind blowing across the field. It wasn't an easy day to judge punts with the wind, which is why the Ravens let so many hit the ground.

Has anyone seen any data the real injury risk vs reward in a punt return situation. How much more likely is Wes to get injured than in a WR position?

Good question.

On returns one gets hit at high speed, but usually by guys one sees and can prepare for. I'm not sure that's less health than more ordinary plays, on which one is likely to get hit a little less hard, but more from a blindside.

Change of direction/footing is another big injury threat. Welker's worst career injury by far came when nobody touched him at all.

Anyhow, on any punt return where the returner gets hit at all (i.e., not a fair catch), there are likely to be a number of yards at stake. Hands and experience matter a lot too.

Two of our three top punt returners are injured. I have no problems with Welker having that duty.

Did anyone else notice edelman's maroney-esq feet shuffling on his PR's?

I was happy to see welker back there. Especially when playing a defense like B-more's field position is huge.

Punt returns are important. Before Welker, Troy Brown was the returner, spelled by Faulk. Troy Brown could get 10 yds in a buffalo stampede. Can't ever remember Faulk dropping a punt.
