At best. It was a good win today against a good team, but let's not automatically assume we're back in the elite. It's still a long season with plenty of time for defenses to adjust. Let's see if the defense can keep it up next week in San Diego.

Too high after the wins, too low after the losses.

My take about tonight's victory in PatsFans.com blogs.

New England is back in the elite

Four rookies in the starting lineup. Absolutely incredible. Parcells used to say that you could add one loss to his schedule for every rookie he was forced into playing. Now by week 5, we are starting 4 rookies, and beating the Ravens.

Awesome.

I'm not convinced that there is an elite team in the NFL this year. This is a strange year indeed, I mean the Chargers are number 1 in total offense and total defense and they are 2-4.

Strange days!

The Pats are an elite team through week six. That isn't worth a whole heck of a lot. The Broncos were an elite team through week six last year and finished losing six of their last eight and going 8-8.

I would rank the Pats among the elites right now, but it is almost a given that an elite team right now will fall apart down the stretch and an average/mediocre team will end up in the elite category by the end of the season.

I'm hugely excited by this win, however I completely agree with this statement. The Pats don't need to reserve the duck boats just yet, but I don't want to minimize this win either- it is a big win for the team.

The pats have never left "elite". Well not since 2002.

They never left.

This is a very young D they made progress today. The O did ok against a great without Brady having his usual game (a number of inaccurate throws today.

If the team keeps improving like this it could be special come playoff time, looking forward to the game in SD next week not a great team but their O has played well at home, another step next week I hope.

Settle down. It's only October. It's a great win 'against a quality opponent', but let's not get too wound up. Cooler heads need to prevail. I loved the game, they played great, but there's a long way to go.

Might be a glimpse of a playoff team just the same.

+1

I can't really think of an elite team this year. Heck, the Ravens are about as good as anybody right now.

I think the Pats have the potential to step up as an elite team compared to many other teams this year.

To be honest this was the most significant victory since Brady came back last year IMO. We sucked on the road last year and haven't really shown the heart to gut out close games. I thought the Brady to Moss connection was getting stale. The defense is seriously young. Cunningham had a great game for a rookie.

I view this game as a big stepping stone to where we need to be as a T-E-A-M...

It has been a long long time since I felt this team had a 'defining moment' and built some confidence. I think even BB showed it in the press conference.

To me, "elite" teams are honed in december and the playoffs. So far this year, I think the NFL is replete with a lot of "very good" teams, among which the Patriots belong after today and at least until next week. :)

The Colts, Jets and Saints are close to being called elite this year, but all the other very good teams are still trying to prove themselves. It's a long season and "elite" will remain a meaningless term until the middle of January. Today separated Atlanta and the Ravens from the designation. Let's see what happens next week.

Have you watched the Colts or Saints play this season? The Colts are 0-2 in their division, 2-2 in the conferance and 1-2 on the road. The Saints outside of today have struggled to score and their kicking game is a mess. The Jets have been impressive, but it took late PI on 4th and 6 to get it done today.

The Colts and Saints are far from elite at this point.

Two reasons for that statistical anomaly:

1) Norv

2) Turner

"Elite" isn't just a one season designation. The Colts and Saints made it to the SB last year. The Jets came back and won today (the PI was a legit call...the pass was in his lap and the defender pulled his face mask as he was getting ready for it) on a short week in a tough environment; so far, the Colts are looking OK tonight.

I'll stand by that.

Being elite is about potential to improve during the season. No teams are playing at a level that they will need to be playing at once December comes around. Patriots have the potential to be elite but so do Pit, Bal, Ind, NO, NYJ and maybe some others. At this point teams just need to stay in the race and improve. The Pats are doing that but so are other teams.
