The annual "late round QB" thread

Since I'm guessing the Patriots won't be taking part in the Andrew Luck/Ryan Mallett/Jake Locker/etc. sweepstakes. . . .

Which late-round QBs do you think they might sign to try and groom as the next Brian Hoyer?

I have a few prospects in mind who I really like and I'll go into detail later, but bare in mind Draftniks, to be under consideration for Big Daddy Bill's Quarterback Emporium, you need at least three of the following attributes/positives:

• Good or better mechanics
• Productivity
• Football Intelligence
• Leadership
• Height

BB rarely strays from that. Brady was all of the above and must have set Pats QB-o-meter to Defcon 1, and although since then a few have lacked certain aspects (Brian Hoyer - height, Matt Cassel/Todd Mortensen - productivity, Rohan Davey - height) but in the main, most of our guys tick 3/4 of the above.

I watched one last night and I know NE had a scout at one of their games: Louisville QB Adam Froman, 6-4/220, still a bit raw from a late start playing football and a later start as a passing QB.

I also like Cincinnati's Jr. QB Zach Collaros and Boise State's Jr. QB Kellen Moore, though I doubt either comes out early.

I think guys like McElroy and Tolzien could be options at the end of the draft. Maybe UNC's T.J. Yates could be a possibility too. I'll throw out one serious longshot. How about Justin Roper formerly from Oregon, now at Montana. Really tall, lanky guy, but moves well, throws a decent ball and seems to have some potential. He'd probably be worthy of signing as an UDFA or maybe picking in the 7th if he plays well for the remainder of the season.

Roper is reportedly missing his throw and getting tangled in his lariat under the Big Sky. I'd like to catch a game and see what's happening -- as I recall they also had a nice RB whom I'd like to scout some more.

I REALLY like Moore. I love the way he plays. I just wish he was bigger. He seems to be under 6 feet tall and under 190lbs. Some resources list him around 170lbs. If he could just grow a few inches and put on 30lbs, he could be a 1st rounder! If he comes out of the combine at like 5'10" and 185lbs, I don't know if any team will be willing to take him on as a QB prospect, regardless of his skills.

I like Ricky Stanzi from Iowa (6'4", 230#). But I bet he gets taken too early for him to even be a consideration for us even though he's getting almost no draft buzz.

I would replace "Height" with "Size"; one of the knocks on Brady coming out of college was that he was rather skinny (6'4" 210), and it wasn't clear if his body could stand up to the hits an NFL QB takes.

It's interesting that the QB drafted the highest, O'Connell, had a fabulous frame and fabulous athleticism but terrible mechanics, and much of his productivity was carrying the football. Then he was beaten out by a kid with little in the way of physical gifts, but much better mechanics, accuracy and field vision.

Been staying up until all hours in a work blitz , had to put football aside for a while. But I'm never far...

Nathan Enderle, Idaho, 6'4", 235

Good or better mechanics
When in the pocket, his mechanics are solid. Has a lightening quick release and throws a catchable ball. Good athlete and can scramble a little, but his mechanics break down a bit when he gets flushed.

Productivity
Did a lot of learning on the job his first two years (the Vandals had been bad for a while). Had a very nice Junior year with almost 3000 yards passing, 62% comp, 22 TD, 9 Int. Unfortunately was injured for two huge conference games late (Boise, Fresno) but bounced back to finish the year strong.

2010 has been disappointing so far, with a monster stretch of Hawaii, Nevada, Boise coming up. From what I've seen, the OL has been problematic and Enderle has been getting knocked around.

Football Intelligence
Runs a pro-style offense and seems very comfortable spreading the ball around...both from the shotgun and under center. Was developing a good pocket presence which makes the OL struggles this year so disappointing. Hard to grade football IQ, but I guess I don't see any red flags at this point. As for book smarts, he is pre-med so he probably isn't a dope.

Leadership
The team really responded to him last year. Led Idaho to a couple of nice comeback wins late, including in their bowl game (2 pt conversion to win with a couple seconds left). He struggled late tonite in a winnable game at LaTech so it will be interesting to see how the team responds with some big WAC games coming up (ESPN has the Friday game against Boise in a few weeks).

Height
Prototype height and bulk. Strong arm but not a cannon. The physical makeup and tools are definitely there.

Enderle might be a day 2 guy if not for the team's struggles this year. With a tough schedule ahead, I wouldn't expect him to be able to improve his draft stock much and he likely won't wow anyone at the combine. Should be there for the Pats 5th or 6th round picks.

Dang you nailed you it...I was reading this thread to see if anyone put him in here as this is my binky....He is a great game manager....can make all the throws....Has decent size at 6'3" 220lbs....He is getting more national recognition which could put him higher in the draft but I would love for him to fall to us....
