Results from Monday's game are in. Shockingly, 25.9% of this week's contestants picked the Dolphins, a very high number for this contest. Even more shockingly, 72.9% picked the Patriots, who obviously had almost no chance to win.

One man, previous unknown "Roland", was not swayed by the pregame reports and emerged victorious. At press time he was unavailable for comment.

I'm assuming that means we're subtracting from each side of the score... this would be a better contest, so no complaints.

So two questions: 1 - this isn't a mistake, right? Seems like other guys were in a similar boat, so I am assuming that's what's going on... and 2 - this did change, right? I'm just remembering old rules, not developing Alzheimers?

Real score was Pats 41 - 14

31 + (10) = 41
24 - (10) = 14
10 + 10 = 20

Its just adding the totals of how far off you were.

Same here, I made a last-minute change from Pats W to Pats L, and it cost me 9 points.

Yeah I figured that's the math, I'm actually wondering whether it use to be different, or whether I just remembered it that way.

Nope, it's been that way from the first week in 2005. I actually took it over the second week, the contest was started by AndyJohnson. Part of the text explaining the scoring in each week's post was actually written by him and I never changed it. I volunteered to take over after more people entered the first week than he expected, and he realized he didn't really have the time and patience to tabulate the scores weekly.

I believe Andy got the idea from another board, maybe you saw a similar contest elsewhere with the rules you remember? I like the rules as they are, there have been many suggestions for tweaks (some of which I agree with) but in the end I think for this contest simplicity is important so I have kept the changes to a minimum.

Well it's clearly better the way it is than that way, so it's fine by me... (though I would prefer being off by 3 to being off by 20... so that means [wahhh] I'll have to pick accurately rather than rely on luck!)

If I had known that the Pats would score TDs on a blocked FG attempt, an INT & a KO return, and block a punt deep in doofins territory, then I would've changed my prediction.

As long as they can duplicate those feats every week and not have to rely on their defense,
then they'll be A-OK.
