Before I get started, I want to say that I am opposed to bringing in Vincent Jackson. He's not worth the picks or money (although he is talented) and is another problem waiting to happen. However, I have an idea on how to vastly improve our WR position without having to wait on rookies.

As we all know, Tom is no spring chicken. He's 33 years old and the window for another SB is pretty much the length of his deal (4-5yrs). Now, while I wouldn't have a problem drafting a rookie WR in 2011, I don't know if it would ultimately help us get to that 4th SB ring any faster. That being said, my proposed idea would involve us trading for Larry Fitzgerald.

Now before you guys start shaking your heads or laughing, hear me out. Aside from the obvious reasons for acquiring Larry (young, great receiver), he is the ultimate professional. Everytime I hear him speak, I always think he'd be the ULTIMATE model of the Patriot way.

As for why we could get him, it's simple: The Cardinals are cheap. Don't let the media fool you. They try to paint the Bidwells (the owners) as frugle or wise with their money. They're not. They're the type of person that would rather steal free samples than pay for a nice dinner when they have $100 in their pocket. For God's sake, when Larry was a FA in 2008, the Cardinals were hesitant to pay him. Hesitant to pay a classy, Pro-Bowl WR...unbelievable. Hell, they almost let Kurt Warner go to the 49ers after the SB before they ultimately paid him. Need I say more? As much as we bash the Krafts and Bill for their spending ways, they're not THIS bad.

Anyway, I feel that a trade for Fitzgerald would line up perfectly with our mission to win at least one more SB and would keep our offense potent without the drama (i.e Moss). Now mind you, this trade would be done during the offseason before the draft (since Fitzgerald is a FA after next season). I would trade our original 1st, original 2nd, original 3rd, and a 2012 4th for him and sign him to a 5yr extension (which would make him 32/33 when his deal expires).

Pros:

Young
Proven Receiver
Professional on and off the field
Doesn't get emotional when he doesn't get the ball

Cons:

Rather hefty draft pick package to get him

What say you?

**Note: On the trade package, if it's a little high, please say so. I'd rather propose too much than too little for a receiver of Fitzgerald's caliber. Also, if anyone else has any ideas for trade compensation, feel free to post them.

I'm "all in" for getting Larry F.....

I like Larry Fitzgerald, but I wouldn't trade four draft picks for him. Not including a 1st anyway.

I think Fitzgerald being a good soldier is the exact reason we won't get him. He SHOULD be complaining right now about the Cards not getting him a competant QB (although Max Hall might be, I have no idea) when Warner retired. But he's keeping quiet and playing along because he's not a wavemaker. Poor guy. He was special with Warner, and could be again with a competant QB.

And yes, the Bidwell are incredibly cheap. I remember reading a former player saying if it wasn't gameday, the fridges were padlocked and the players were expected to bring their own drinks. You own a pro franchise and you're worried about too many people getting some Gatorade? LOL

if only....

I'm all for getting Larry Fitzgerald, but even the Cards aren't stupid enough to trade their best, most marketable player. He has the potential to be Hall of Fame good, and he's young.

Also, even with that in mind, I believe the Patriots wouldn't give up that many picks for him -- 'though if they were to give up such a bonanza, he might at a talent-level that would warrant it.

Finally, if we're giving up that much, I want Demarcus Ware to be the player coming back.

I think the title of this thread should probably be changed to:

A 100% unrealistic replacement at WR

Larry Fitzgerald? Give me a break.

I'd do this deal immediately.

Give up the whole draft to sign him for top FA money? How does that make sense? You can sign him after the year for no draft picks at all.

Are we that desperate? Moss wasn't even catching many passes and brady forced it so much it was an interception about 1/3 of the time when he threw it deep.

The only guy I'd trade a first and a second for is Calvin Johnson. That dude is such a beast it isn't even funny. He could catch 18 TD's here in 12 weeks. Best combo of size/speed/hands in football.

I like the thought but in reality he's the face of the franchise now, esp with Warner retired..

You would rather have Calvin Johnson than Larry Fitz? I strongly disagree.

LOLLLLLL! that was funny....no disrespect, but this isn't fantasy football or madden. BB is not looking to fill a WR void with a trade. There is no void. If trading Moss created a void, we wouldn't have traded him. Moving him simply opens a opportunity for the players that we have ALREADY to play more. We have already invested in younger players at WR and TE that now can get more playing time with Moss off the field.

Now I am a Moss fan. I think that with him on the field, we are a better team. But BB sees things that we don't on the practice field and we still have a lot of targets for Brady.

We build through the draft, we always have. The only exception is when we got Moss from the Raiders for basically nothing...but we are not going to pull a Mike Ditka and take the weekend off during the NFL draft, for 1 player. I don't care if its the 2020 draft. Unless getting LF somehow automatically guarantee's us a couple of SB's, which it doesn't. Would be nice though

If this thread was on Espn countdown, it would be featured in "C'Mon Man!"

Sure. Faster, stronger, younger. His only problem is having played with bad quarterbacks his whole career.

I agree, give Johnson Brady, Manning or Brees and he'd be sensational

shame it'll never happen

It would be great if this guy somehow ended up a Patriot. He'd be the perfect receiver for the type of offense we're trying to run.

Unfortunately it will never happen.

His biggest problems are injury related. Fitz has better hands and runs better routes.

What Bidwill will pay is totally irrelevant.

The Cardinals have already paid him $33 million.

They are on the hook for only $7 million for the next 2 years, and then there's the lockout.

You think the Cardinals are so cheap they won't pay him $7 million in 2012?

The trade proposal works on the basis that the Cardinals are not going to pay Fitzgerald what he wants after 2011. In other words, they'd be doing what we did with Moss, trying to get something for someone they won't keep. It's happened with Boldin this year.

Cousin, I have thought about Fitzgerald before I read your post as I am sure many have. Great idea and you know there will be those who torch you. So what. I got torched for suggesting Moss before that Raiders trade and I got "it will never happen, you're an idiot, he's all done" about two years prior. Regardless if you think if it was good or bad now, I never enjoyed watching another Pats WR with maybe the exception of Troy Brown (tie).

The concept would be hard for the Cardinals F.O. to swallow. But....if we were to play this out on what could or could not be done (remember all you anal big shot posters, this is done for fun and speculation) I might throw in a block buster because we know the Cards need a shake up and the Pats had that done this week already.

You know that the Pats F.O. and the "smarter than thou, Kool ade drinking posters" on this forum will swear that Tate is Jerry Rice and Price is the new Lynn Swan. In actuality Chad Jackson made a few plays in year one and then we got?......Chad Jackson. BB and his FO do not have a great track record drafting WR , hence Moss, Welker, Stallworth etc. OK Branch was decent in the beginning but turned out to be a greedy little so and so (and you guys want hims back with one leg?).

We have problems that Bill has now created at WR (YES IT WAS A MISTAKE), corner rushers and OLB. I still see a glaring problem in the secondary. We will take our lumps at CB but I see Safety issues that won't help those kids. I am sorry, Merriweather is not smart, Sanders is regressed from an already less than stellar starter role and yet there is a glimmer of hope out of Chung if he got some help.

The Cards are rebuilding when they lost Warner and cut the non effective Leinart. They need a QB desperately and the 2011 Draft has some better talent than the last few years. But after that the need some new blood as well. One rookie QB addition is not enough. They need a core of kids to build on in 2011.You are right the Bidwells are cheap. Kids make more sense.

Let's play this little experiment out. We need Safety help. Experience and skill are not Merriweather and Sanders. We need a WR. We have many Draft choices and the success rate is 17% in that venture so perhaps two will be impact of our first eight picks in 2011. I do not trust Draft choices. We have had two decent draft classes in the last seven years. Not great odds. Some of our best Teams were constructed of Trades, F.A. and other teams discards (UDFA).Also (see 2009 Saints please). Draft choices are important but not the only or best way to be successful.

I would like to see us get Fitzgerald who is trapped in AZ without much hope in the immediate future. The other guy I think could backbone this defense ala Rodney Harrison, is 30 year old Safety Adrian Wilson (about when we got Rodney). He is a 220 LB big Safety that BB likes because the can move him up. He is very smart and still very quick. He already has a sack and two interceptions He understands the position. His contract has just been redone but it is manageable.

Here is the package that I (that means that is my thought) would like to see.
Mankins (Wisenhunt prefers pounding the ball as when he was with the Steelers and Faneaca is about done and will be 34 next year), Merriweather and our 1st rounder of 2011 for Fitzgerald and Wilson. They get two Pro Bowlers who are young former first rounders and we get two Pro Bowlers who can help our Team now because our Defense has no leader really and TB would have a perfect WR Team guy for the grand finale of his career. The Fitzgerald money will free up the Cards to sign Mankins. Mankins is on the left coast where he wants to be. His anal pore agent might be ok with this deal.

We have already said that Fitzgerald fits the Pats mold. Wilson fills the Rodney void and would be a great mentor to Chung. I'd rather ship Sanders but we would not get anyone to sniff at him and some here would cry more tears if he left than Moss.

I know Fitzgerald is the face of their franchise but they need this change as much as we could use those two. They are the two players that could make a difference in 2010 and beyond. They could use another CB. How about Wilhite or Wheatley as the "throw in".
