Cris Carter: Pats no longer an elite offense

In my opinion I think Carter is dead wrong. There might be less vertical threat, and not as much stretched field, but I think we will find a way, as we always seem to do.

Who gives a ****? Carter isn't going to be objective at all in this case because of the player and team involved. Even if it turns out to be accurate his opinion holds no water in this case.

Randy Moss was what most teams planned for, who are they going to be afraid of now? Sure Wes can carve up teams underneath, but with nobody dragging defenders down field or at least bringing a lot of attention to their side I think this offense is going to become a disappointment.

I hope I'm wrong, but I just can't deny that a lot of what the Pats do offensively is because of the attention Moss gets.

I agree. I think we'll still be able to move the ball, may just take longer to get to the end of the field, which I'm totally cool with.

However, you also have to wonder how much of our gameplan is built on having Moss in the game and expecting that double team to the outside. He has played the most snaps of any skill position player other than the QB since he's been here.

The worst part about this is that we play Baltimore next game and there's a very good chance that with Moss we wouldn't put up a ton of points, but of course now that he's been traded if we don't break 25 points it's going to be chicken little central on this board and in the local media.

If any NFL team has a player that needs to be coddled, that player isn't an asset to that team...unless he's a QB.

Moss NEEDED to get attention...that has been his downfall his entire career.

We just became an elite offense, IMO. Brady will go back to spreading the ball, just like Troy Brown mentioned today, and I also have been thinking/saying since the Miami game in 2007. Moss was fun to watch but ultimately he is not a team player for more than a year or two at a stretch. Moss reached the limit of his capacity to be a team player.

Interestingly Bruschi says that Moss had become a distraction already to other players.

And of course, like when Maroney was traded, all the actual players in the lockerroom and the coaches and the former players like Troy and Bruschi universally condemned him, the same will happen with Moss whilst the clueless fanboys ravage themselves in fits of misguided angst.

Such is life as a Pats fan.

Do you watch the games? He already gets doubled. We doubled him when he was with Miami, and he still killed us.

In the slot, he's all-but-uncoverable.

Last time Brady had to "Spread the ball around" without Moss in the team, were they an elite offense?

I don't see the whole thing that Brady didn't spread the ball around. He damn well tried. But Galloway, Watson and Sam Aiken were not good enough.

How can an offense be considered elite when they start only one real veteran guy that starts in Welker. Tate is decent, but in his first full season. Hernandez and Gronk are rookies. Edelman is in his 2nd year, but hasnt really showed much this season. And in the running game, there are only 3 healthy backs on the entire roster. You cannot call this an elite offense

I don't disagree with Chris Carter. The Pats lost that receiver other teams feared, the only one we had with proven deep speed. The receiving corp consists of one great receiver (Welker), two rookie TE's (who obviously look like they CAN be studs), one receiver who has played 5 NFL games (Tate), one seemingly hobbled receiver (Edelman), and a rookie receiver who hasn't played an official NFL regular season game yet (Price). Our starting RB's are two undrafted free agents whose career totals are 746 career rushing yards. 90% of the time, Welker and Hernandez are our running game on those short passes. The offense scored 24 against Cincy, 14 against the Jets, 38 against putrid Buffalo, and 20 against Miami. And except for the last game, most of the points are scored in the first half.

I don't know how this offense will stack up against good defenses, but I guess we will see next week. What I DO like, is now Brady won't be trying to force the long ball to Moss everytime we get behind. Hopefully we will have a more balanced offense, and hopefully this means more catches for everyone. I'd love to see Price get in some games.

We aren't an elite offense anymore. True. To be an elite offense, we now have to prove we can still spread the field without Moss. If we can do that, especially against the next few teams on our scheule, then we can once again be called an elite offense. We currently have unmatched potential on this team and the offense has yet to prove it can help carry the defense without Moss to spread the field. We will see in the next few weeks how it works out.
