Obviously got a TD but thought he looked OK at starting CB, way better than Butler

What game were you watching?

He had two good plays all game. The recovery and return of the blocked kick; and the last Dolphins snap of the evening. I can racall several 3rd and forever, where he was not within 10 yards of the WR, making the wide open catch to complete the conversion.

He missed a lot of tackles. Wasn't too impressed but maybe the TD will build some confidence.

He wasn't too good. He can't tackle even though he "gets there" a lot. He was able to scoop up the blocked FG and return it for a TD, so that is something. But, he has a long way to go.

He has looked worse than Butler in both games so far.

He just doesn't have the hips to stay with his man. I'm actually not sure what Belichick is doing. Maybe getting into Butler's head.

In fact, Butler only had one series out there, and when he came in he stayed with Bess the whole time, and even stepped in front of him for a potential interception that was knocked away by Bess at the last second. Arrington would have been 10 yards downfield on that play.

I'm really scratching my head over this. I know Butler has been bad but he at least stayed with the WRs.

One thing that may be happening is that Bess is strong and shift, a Steve Smith type at WR, and BB might have thought he needed someone with strong tackling skills out there for this game. I actually expect Butler to be back at CB for the Ravens game.

I agree. Arrington was poor last night.

Arrington isn't a guy you want playing as your CB2. Ideally, he'd be a dimeback, if that.

I expect Butler to be starting again after the bye.

I'd also note that Wilhite seems to be doing okay as a nickel back.

That was noticeable last night. I think it may be something designed to get into the head space of Butler by BB.

Wasn't impressed with him. Burnt on an inside slant (IIRC) by Bess for a long gain. On one of the 3rd and longs him and one of the LB's gave Bess way too much room on an underneath pass which Bess obviously converted. Will speak volumes on how bad Butler is if he's still not good enough to supplant Arrington by midseason.

Agreed. We don't see what goes on in practice, but if Butler isn't putting in the time to progress there, BB really has no choice but to keep rewarding Arrington for busting his butt, and punishing Butler for not. Otherwise Butler will think as long as he's the most talented CB, he'll be out there.

Not saying that's what's happening, but I can't think of a reason BB would play a less talented player, other than he's unhappy with the work ethic of the more talented one.

Don't forget that trip of Ricky Williams - he was gone if that didn't happen, and as he didn't get penalized (although he deserved to) I'll count that as a good play.

Probably good to keep Butler out for a while, confidence in cornerbacks is critical. If they lose it, they're toast. So let Darius chill for a bit and work his way back in. When he does, and Wheatley returns, we may not be so bad.

Arrington played well, a significant upgrade from Butler.

and as he didn't get penalized (although he deserved to)

I didn't get a chance to rewatch that play in detail, but what is the rule on tripping? My memory (which is admittedly probably flawed), he grabbed him around the ankle with his hand, didn't he? Or did he whip a leg out?

To those of you dissing Arrington, did he give up a touchdown last night?

(crickets)

I didn't think so.

Next question.

Yeah, I'm with QB12 and wondering how holding his receiver (Hartline) to three catches constitutes bad performance. I think he also gets credit for keeping Marshall in check when they had him lined up on the defensive right side.

The Dolphins were moving Bess around all over the place. No one in our secondary can cover him man to man, and that's nothing new. Seems unfair to single Arrington out. Arrington is our #2 CB, and he's improving weekly. Get used to seeing him.

The idea that he has performed worse in his two games than Butler did in his two, and that BB is playing headgames instead of putting his best players on the field, is not only ignorant, its downright hysterical.

To be nice...I will put it like this. He looked horrible.

He "whiffed" on soooo many tackles. Too often was he in place only to totally miss the tackle. It was the most annoying thing to watch time and again. With that said, I think he has played better overall in his time on the field than Butler. I'm fine with him remaining in the starting lineup. I really don't want to see a change at this point.

I never used this line before, but it's time now: I question anyone's football knowledge who believes the above.

In fact, Butler was in there last night, and in the short time he was in there, he had a pass deflection slated for Bess. In all the time Arrington was in there, he wasn't in the same universe as Bess. Please. Ridiculous.

i dont understand how people can argue this point

i agree, arrington played pretty badly and i want to see butler again

arrington was stumbling all over the place, he was always far away from the wr when we played man, and he always lost the ball

on defense i only remember one good play, and that was when the game was well at hand

not impressed with im whatsoever

Probably wishfull thinking.

I'd like to see BB coach Butler up and build his confidence.

Henne looked to see who Arrington was covering (or trying to cover) and went that way on almost every 3rd and long. The only reason he didn't allow any TD's was because Henne sucks.
