I was looking at some college recruiting info and noticed that a SMU commit had been recruited by Adrian Klemm. I clicked on the name and sure enough, it is indeed Belichick's first ever Patriot draft pick in his second season as OL coach for SMU. I wondered briefly why he would end up there but then remembered that June Jones was his coach at Hawaii.

Injuries kept him from ever doing anything for us. Here's wishing him well in his coaching career.

Blast from the past. Thanks.

For the history impaired, Kraft hadda give the Jets our #1 pick for signing BB. BB's 1st pick, a 2nd rounder was the oft-injured Klemm. Not a great start. Then again, Bill has "issues" with lots of his 2nd round picks. :)

In all fairness though - Bill didn't have a ton of time to prepare and relied heavily on Bobby Grier's draft board.

Yeah - but truth be told I thought it was a fantastic 2nd round pic - the lowest risk pick of a guy projected by many to go in the first round, but a lineman one could bring along somewhat slowly.

Maybe he would have been good if not for the injuries.

Man I remember that draft.

I remember most people(myself included) on KFFL (or was it Mouth Off back then) thought that 6th round pick was a wasted pick.

Round 2
15 (46) New England Patriots - Adrian Klemm, T Hawaii

Round 3
14 (76) New England Patriots - J.R. Redmond, RB Arizona State

Round 4
33 (127) New England Patriots - Greg Robinson-Randall, T Michigan State

Round 5
12 (141) New England Patriots - Dave Stachelski, TE Boise State
32 (161) New England Patriots - Jeff Marriott, DT Missouri

Round 6
33 (199) New England Patriots - Tom Brady, QB Michigan

Round 7
20 (226) New England Patriots - Casey Tisdale, LB New Mexico
33 (239) New England Patriots - Patrick Pass, RB Georgia

Klemm got waylaid by injuries, but when you look at it, just a year later, Greg RR and Brady were both starters on a superbowl winner, and JR and Patrick were contributors. That's 4 guys out of that supposedly weak draft.....not bad, especially when you factor in the extra points you get for picking a HOFer. ;)

Yup. Redmond and Pass didn't turn out quite as expected, but they were definitely contributers. Pass's (and to a lesser extent, Redmond's) talent of fumbling at the most inopportune time always gave me fits, though. Otherwise, they were still good value where they were picked.

As I recall, Kevin Faulk had a similar problem early on.

Very much wasted! We all know you can get future HoFers in the 7th ;)

...Just 'cause y'all might find it as bizarre and amusing as I do:

* Joe Montana ~ 3rd Round
* Tom Brady ~ 6th Round
* Johny Unitas ~ 9th Round
* Bart Starr ~ 17th Round

To phrase a cliche, The Draft is a crap shoot.

That's why when people think about stocking up on pick after pick, most of these guys never pan out. So many of the greats were later discovered. Half of the guy going in round 1 will be out of the league in 4 seasons. It's far from a sure thing. it's easy to say that but when you take a step back and actually look at it, you realize just how special it is to find impact guys.

I would say that that right there is another reason why Coach drafts the best football player available when New England's turn comes, rather than just for specific needs.
