my uncle brought this up......

so.... on obvious passing downs why not put him in OLB position for pressure purposes?

Better yet, why not bring in a guy that can run a 4.2 on passing downs?

It doesn't matter how fast a player is if he can't shed blocks.

Because he is afraid of contact?

But seriously, he was the fastest linebacker at the Combine in 2008 (4.47 40). When he caught the pick against Cincinnati, I knew he was going to go to the house because of his speed.

Not sure if he is a good matchup for offensive linemen...maybe against a TE or RB/FB?

No, have Guyton give 12 yard cushions to pass catchers, then he can use his speed to make the tackle after the first down.

..or run into a safety and a cornerback, allowing the receiver to run free.

Our defensive backs have already been exceptional at this. No need to fix what isn't broken.

Re: Guyton... Fatest LB?

I think he could a TE breaker, personally. Big fan of Guyton, he's exceeded expectations and keeps working hard. We may end being a big fan of this dude by year's end.

Re: Guyton... Fatest LB?

I'm sure there are fatter LBs out there.

Re: Guyton... Fatest LB?

For some reason I have a feeling Guyton would be a beast in the Colts' system.

Yupp, Guyton and probably Mayo's best fit is the Tampa-Cover 2 or a 4-3 base where they won't be asked to engage or rush as much and have space to make plays in coverage.

Re: Guyton... Fatest LB?

Right now, Guyton is arguably our best ILB in terms of coverage. I don't know if you want to weaken the ILB position on passing downs to improve the OLB position unless Guyton really turns into a great pass rusher. I want to give Cunningham a chance. I think he could emerge by midseason as rushers.

Re: Guyton... Fatest LB?

fair enough....

it wasn't my idea, but I see where the logic comes from. No harm trying him there a few times.

I think Spikes will get better at ILB:singing:

I think Cunningham has slowly started looking more comfortable over the first three weeks. Didn't see much time against the Bengals except in the 2nd half, looked ok against the Jets, and I thought played pretty well against the Bills. How much of that is due to the Bills o-line being worse than the Jets I'm not sure, but if he continues his progression this week I expect a couple noticeable plays by him against the Dolphins.

Spikes will be fine in zone coverage once he gets his bearings. He was very effective at Florida that way, and has a nose for the ball and good hands. Where he might have problems is in man coverage vs a back or fast TE...

Remember this is basically his preseason. Missing the preseason means the guy has to learn in regular games. If he wasn't injured, he would be farther ahead of where he is right now.

Re: Guyton... Fatest LB?

More than ever this season I am realizing why speed is overrated when it comes to pass rush, even - and maybe especially - on the edge. Anybody can run in a straight line up towards the QB. It takes a player with technique to turn the corner or use pass rush moves to get the tackle out of the way and get to the QB.

In terms of interior blitz, speed isn't a huge factor there, either. That comes down to power and shedding blocks.

I think Spikes has the best combination of size and speed in terms of interior blitzing on our team. Problem is he's not on the field as much on passing downs b/c of his problems in coverage.

As for the edge, it remains to be seen. Cunningham had a nice bull rush when he was picked up by Spiller, but when he was going up against the RT, he was basically just getting straight upfield and not getting near the QB. Hopefully that improves. When they went with a big pass rushing unit against Cincy at one point, I saw Wright make a nifty pass rush move on the edge, going up field, but cutting back inside and tossing the tackle aside.

Re: Guyton... Fatest LB?

Yea this was a subject braought up before and I think his inability to shed blocks quickly was the issue?? not a 100% sure on that though.

I look at this defense and I see physical talant with poor decision making.

We all know BB runs a cerebral kind of defense and the learning curve is tough.

And at the end of the day even when these guys perform at their best it may not be enough. are we comparing a 4.4 40 guy vs what we had in a 4.8 40 guy with a quicker mind to read the play.. well you know where I am going.

or maybe its a preperation thing. Do they do everything they can to learn about the team they are playing??

BB said something last year that I often think back too. If every player can improve just a little bit.. 1%-3% then collectively that can make a huge difference on the field.

And I think thats where this team is at. Your not going to get perfect play from these guys.. at least not right now.. But maybe they can all step it up a little bit and that might be enough to keep our offense on the field scoring!

Excellent points, Rookie. :)

This D is young. An exasperated BB ejected vets that he felt could not (Woods, Alexander) or would not (AD, Springs) improve by some measurable percentage. My bigest concern with some of the younguns (but not the Mayos) is are they really willing to work hard, to watch film alone at night and do what it takes to improve that several percent, mostly by reducing glaring mental errors...or not?

Re: Guyton... Fatest LB?

Why? because we tried him there as a rookie and he failed miserably, he can't stop the run and he isn't a good pass-rush, if it was all about 40 time Mike Vrabel and Willie McGinest would of never been successful.

Re: Guyton... Fatest LB?

I noticed some people have a tendency to dismiss an idea simply because, in most situations, it wouldn't work. Playing Guyton outside in most scenarios (or for an extended series of snaps) would not work for the reasons mentioned. But there's no reason he can't be used as an edge or interior rusher against certain matchups and situations.

Try not to think of it as a position move, but a situation specific assignment. Positions are a lot more fluid than that. An offensive example would be someone like Aaron Hernandez. He's a TE, but when he lines up in the slot, he's a WR. It doesn't mean we've "moved" him to WR, it just means that, on that play, against that defense, he's performing the duties of a WR because that's the most advantageous matchup.
