Been a while dear friends since i posted a new thread,,but this has been on my mind ever since we beat the Bengals. All ive been reading on many threads is how weak our young D looks and some even being very negative of the Team. Well not me,,i have been sleeping so good even after our loss to the Jets,,{ not exactly} but felt good on how we moved the ball in the first half of that loss and now after 3 games,,,are we not one Draft away from becoming a GREAT Team ?
With two 1st Rounders and two 2nd Rounders plus multiple picks,,,,dont we look scary ?
Our O look great,,our young TEs scare the hell of everyone,,,plus our young D will be just fine come November,,mark my words.
Once i looked at this,, i took heart and said who else in the NFL can be so lucky to have BB and TB and be in this HUGE potential for the future ! I think we are just 4-6 players short of a new Dynasty. I know thats all next year,,and i dont really know how far we will go this season,,but keep that thought in the back of your mind and it will cheer you up.
My prediction for this season was 11-5,,and i still stick to it because in this Offense and Bill we trust.
The future is bright,,the future is The New England Patriots. Ameen.
Peace. Abdul

I go back and forth on this.

All NFL fanbases seem to think they are on the verge of becoming great, but you are what you are. At the same time, the Pats do have a lot of young talent, draft picks, and the coaching usually gets them playing better by late season.

I'd rather have a team that's already great, but I'll drink the Kool-Aid and hope for the best.

The Raiders lost to the Cardinals. Even as an away game that has to get you excited. The Raiders pick could be really high and if there is a Rookie Draft Salary Cap then the high Raider's pick will be worth even more. I would not be surprised if we end up with 3 1st round picks or 3 2nd round picks, if BB trades down.

They seriously need at least one veteran on defense, preferably secondary. I've just about had it with watching Sanders whiff tackles and run into his teammates and Merriweather's douch baggeries. I'm just praying Ed Reed gets cut next season or traded to Pats. I know he is not the player he once was and is dealing with injuries but at least I know he won't make dumb mistakes...I'm all for building a team through draft but right now, leadership and veteran direction are sorely lacking in that unit.

Are there any other teams with multiple 1st round picks?

Do you gain more in the draft than you lose to older age and/or injury? We've had good drafts but we have lost great players ... we're going in the right direction but we'll be losing Matt Light and Neal soon and maybe Moss also ... those are 3 holes to fill and we still need DL, CB, and OLB and C help ... Koppen is a bit not strong enough as he gets older also.

it appears we're at least 2 drafts away but the draft is only 1/3 of the puzzle. maybe Bill gets lucky in the FA area.

Well I think we are a lot further away from having a championship defense then most..

We have not drafted particularly well the past years.. yes we have a lot of picks on the team and they are starting, but who are they competing against? Our vets are gone and Bill waited a year to long to start the process (which he admit in an interview)..

I don't see one impact player or game changer on this defense.. Our scheme apparently doesn't fit our personal at this point in their careers.. Maybe in a few years it will but by then, Brady will be in his mid to late 30's and those players we've been waiting to develop will be in free agency and we'll be bringing in new blood..

We have 24 draft picks on our team. do we really need another 10? Time for BB to pick up the phone and use those draft picks on a player who can step in from day one and make an impact (Washington, Dillion, welker, Moss)..

We are one draft away if those four picks in the first two rounds are home-runs next year.

McCourty looks like the real deal, as does G-Force.
If Cunningham and Spikes really come on strong in the system, it allows BB to be ultra-selective next year and really put this defense on the map for several years.

I still wish we had taken Clay Matthews tho........

by and large I agree with your thread.

Multiple first round picks PLUS multiple second round picks! (and that Carolina 2nd is looking might tasty right now....)

Belichick has not been very good at corners in the draft for quite a while,I would not hold my breath on one

Samuel was his last good pick and even Samuel struggled at times.

McCourty looks bad to you?

This is a really good point.... Carolina going something like 4-12 would be extremely tasty! I fully expect BB to trade up with the Oakland pick. It's his modus operandi with top ten picks..... Makes sense but leaves the fan base feeling empty in general............... leastways to me it does.

Averaging 11 wins per season for 10 years makes up for that draft day super buzz that Detroit Lions fans get to experience every year. ;)

A bunch of CB's go in the first 2 rounds every year ... and who has really excelled in that area? Other than the first 2 or 3 the rest of them are all a crapshoot ... even the #2 and #3 CB picked are a crapshoot.

Patrick Peterson! Imagine him, McCourty, Bodden, and Butler as the four top corners. With Merriweather and Chung as the safties. That is a lot of speed, strength, and size in the secondary. Get yourself a strong DE or OLB with the second first rounder and that defense is looking pretty solid.

Yeah, I was thinking along the same lines. Of course, each year that passes brings up contracts that are expiring, as well. It seems that these 5-year (new) contract guys take 2-3 years to become worth the initial contract...then they want to leave for money that will tax a team's payroll.

So, it's not just a simple matter of adding new players that will require at least a year or two to develop. However, adding them soon would be ideal....have them all growing up together.

The key is having them develop an attitude that wants to win, then complementing it with the hard work to get them there. Isn't this what the previous Pats teams did?

Re: One Draft Away !!!

I like having a lot of picks. And I don't want to throw away this season already but its starting to look like the 3rd consecutive wasted year of Brady's prime, not to mention Moss' and Welker's prime. By the time we have a championship caliber defense again our offense could possibly be too old.

As far as pass defense goes, the importance of a great pass rush >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> the importance of a great secondary (don't believe me then look at the Steelers who have nothing in the secondary outside of Polamolu). Next year when Bodden is healthy, and when Butler can get comfortable in the nickel role, the core of Bodden/McCourty/Butler/Wilhite/Wheatley/Arrington at corner and Meriweather + Chung at safety will suffice just fine in the secondary if they fix the issues at DE and OLB. The front 7 needs to be addressed with 1 of the 2 first round picks and 1 of the 2 second round picks IMO.

Been quietly worrying the same thing.
