I can't see Aaron being able to beat Ben's record which is now at 16 years gone, but he certainly is on his way to 900 or more yards as a TE which seemed impossible in the BB era.

So far he has nearly 210 yards in 3 games which would average out to 70 yards per game and that would mean at this pace he would have 1,120 yards on the season.

With Moss being blanketed and Wes trying to get back to himself it seems Hernendez is the player that no defense has figured out yet.

Maybe he does have a small chance of beating Coates record as a TE but maybe he sees a little less action in the upcoming games or comes across a defense that figures him out.

I don't know but from what I have seen he certainly has the ability as a rookie to get it done.

If anyone in the NFL is a young Tony Gonzalez type receiver as a TE,its this kid.

Faulk being gone definitely improves his chances, and he may do it at some point in the next few years, but I doubt it'll happen this season.

NO, Coats was Bledsoe's only real pass catching threat.

No love for Glenn and Jefferson.

He will break it... just maybe not this year. If Moss goes next year?

Glenn was drafted in 1996, and i think Jefferson played in the late 90's not sure of the exact years. I think the OP is talking about Coats rookie year.

There should be a new category for him. Like he is really a H-back, Coates was a real tight end like Gronk. Its not fair that Hernandez is categorized as a tight end.

All depends on whether Brady sees Hernandez as a option equal to Welker & Moss.

Hern has very good skills (catches with hands, not body), and has above-avg speed, and moves.

I hope Brady throws more to Hern & Gron more, which will free up Welker and Moss...

Hernandez runs great routes, knows how to get open, has excellent hands, and has tons of moves after the catch. He'll be in the league a long, long time.

I think Hernandez could do it. Probably not this year though. I think he will be a Gates type of Te.

What he has going for him is that he is usually covered by the other team's 4th DB or a LB. This is a mismatch all day. The question is will Brady go through his progression long enough to find him wide open?

The better he gets the more teams will game plan against him. I don't see him breaking the record.

Coates rookie year was 1993. Remember Bledsoe's first ever TD pass in his first game in the NFL in Buffalo was a long one to Coates? I think it was a 10-15 yard pass but Coates ended up taking it about 60 yards for the score.

Before the season, on BradyFTW's podcast, I said around 600 yards with 6 TD's. I'm pretty sure he'll surpass my prediction for him. Now, I'm saying 850-900 yards with 7 TD's.

Heh, I think I'll just stop. It was obviously tongue-in-cheek, to me at least. :confused2:

In any case, to answer the original OP's question. It has a low likelihood of ever occurring. It takes the perfect storm to bring about those kind of stats, and the 2010 Pats aren't anything much like the 1994 Pats. I like Hernandez a lot, and expect great things from him, but this isn't one of them.

Coates' rookie year was in 1991, a fifth round draft pick out of Livingstone College.

Shawn Jefferson played for the Patriots from 1996-1999.

Besides all the other reasons for "No", there's also the rookie wall.

Few rookies could hold up to perform at that level for a full season.

I don't think he will since we have so many pass options. But it wouldn't surprise me if he came close to a thousand yard season during his career.

Speaking of Coates, I'm surprised he never got much attention for the HOF. I think he's top 5 in total yards by a TE, 5 Pro Bowls, 2 time first-team All Pro, selected to the all-decade team in the 90s, and won a Super Bowl with the Ravens. I don't recall him ever getting any real attention during the HOF talks. Do I just have my homer glasses on?

I remember hearing somewhere (can't remember where) someone who had a vote on the HOF comittee and he was asked about Coates too the HOF... he laughed it off, saying Coates was no where near the TE the original Kellen Winslow was

As for Hernandez being a real TE, is Dallas Clark a real TE? Because Hernandez does the exact same things as Clark coming out of the slot.

Aaron Hernandez + Brandon Spikes were two of my Prize Binkies, PreDraft.

Back in March, on FF, I was pimping Aaron like a MADMAN, and you wouldn't BELIEVE the near-universal disdain for that call!!

Doubtlessly, I made my share of poor calls, but this one, I am overjoyed about.

As are we all.

I said it then, and I'll say it again:

Aaron Hernandez Has The Magic.

The way he navigates the field is simply breathtaking.

It's like watching Bobby Orr, out there. Get your popcorn:
