ATTN: IAN -Another Annoying Ad

There is an ad that says "congratulations - you won This is no joke.. you are the 100,000 visitor - click here."

This is coming up when going to the messageboard. It actually speaks this and I'm sure if I were to click on this ad, my computer would be filled with nasty crap I don't want.

Can you get rid of this? I know you've been trying to keep the advertisers honest and avoid this type of crap.

FWIW, of you buy a supporting membership you don't get any ads. It's been well worth the money to me.

Are you getting it before, or after logging in? That's actually something I need to know, because that code doesn't even run once you're logged in. The script prevents that portion of the header from loading for your usergroup, which is why the ads don't appear in any of the spots. That's how I coded it.

For registered users, once they log in they see two disappear, so there's only two at the top, and then two at the bottom once their logged in.

If you're on the main portion of the site, unfortunately the two aren't connected so they're still going to appear. So let me know if you're hearing that after logging in and they're gone, because there's no way that should be the case.

I see it, and I know which network it's coming from. I'll narrow it down and then get them to remove it.

I'm also going to move this to the "Help Forum" so I can follow up tomorrow with you and make sure it's gone.

Either way, this stuff happens pretty frequently. Ad networks think they can get away with it since it's pretty rare that a site admin cares as much about user experience as Ian does.

So hold on, you're actually physcially seeing the banner ads? That definitely shouldn't be happening

I'm going to re-emphasize that ads with audio may not be used, especially after the last one we had an issue. I'm not a fan of annoying ads either, and regardless of whether or not people donate, none of you should have to deal with them. It's like every time I go to ESPNBoston.com and the stupid videos start automatically, which is great when I'm sitting there and someone is sleeping nearby and my speakers are on...I wish they'd make that an option instead of playing automatically.

I have a new contact there at that network now, so apparently I'll need to mention it again :explative

I know, I'm seeing it as well. However, I just heard back from them moments ago and it should be gone in the next 2-3 hours. They've located it, but they have to make some changes to block the creative from our feed.
