1.) I'm assuming that Welker was struggling due to the blow to the head. That's the only thing that makes sense to me. The play where he stopped on a pattern led to an interception on a throw to Moss. That's not typical Welker behavior, and that changes the game.

2.) If Moss holds onto the ball during that first drive, the Patriots are up 7-0 in the first quarter, rather than coming up empty after the missed FG attempt, and that changed the game.

3.) Fred Taylor's last run came at 11:17 of the 3rd quarter. BJGE was the man after that. That changed the game, because:

4.) BJGE and Morris are runners who really can't threaten the edges of a defense consistently. That limits them, and opposing teams can play accordingly.

5.) Connolly seems to be getting help on a lot of plays. That's got to have an effect on playcalling/protection.

6.) Hernandez had 6 receptions and looked good running the ball, but he needs to improve his blocking skills.

7.) Was Gronk being well covered, or was Brady just not really looking for him? I couldn't tell. I'll have to go back and look after I get a copy of the game.

8.) I wanted more bubble screens, more motion for Moss and Welker, and more double tight end runs on the perimeter. My not getting them does not mean that the offensive coordinator called a bad game. The offense struggled with execution, not playcalling.

9.) Warren looked good on those two sacks. It's clear, though, that the only DE that has any chance to stand up against the run is going to be Brace. Something needs to be done there, or good running teams are going to hurt the Patriots all season long.

10.) Sanchez threw no picks because the Patriots defenders couldn't cover for crap after the first drive. Corners, safeties, linebackers.... hell, probably the bus driver... all struggled with coverage.

11.) The officials gave some home cooking on the PI calls. The questionable calls went against Butler, but not against Cromartie. While not using them as an excuse (these things happen and the calls were at least understandable) these calls definitely influenced the outcome of the game in favor of the Jets. The Poole interception could have been ruled PI against Cromartie, for example, and the game's completely different if that had happened.

12.) Perhaps now, those people who raged at Dean Pees because of the "10 yard cushion" can start to understand that it's Belichick behind that system.

13.) I thought Cunningham flashed on a couple of occasions, but this team should never have broken camp with this group of OLBs. Which leads to:

14.) Ninkovich instead of Woods continues to seem like a bad decision, IMO.

15.) Westoff did a nice job of preparing the Jets special teams for Tate & Co.

16.) Butler had position on that play in the endzone, and he should have jumped for the ball and gotten the interception, so looking for the offensive PI was a cop out.

17.) Brady looked tremendous early on.

18.) Brady seemed to develop the 'binky' mentality in the second half. Either the lesser lights stopped getting open, or Brady needs to break that habit.

19.) Justin Keller just got open again.

The RB situation was on I've been thinking about as well as Welker's situation, but you bring up a lot of other great points.

Excellent post-game observations.

Follow up, an interesting comment from Brady, particularly for those who've been bashing the offensive coordinator:

Asked if there were plays to be made or if there was just nothing open in the second half when the Patriots went belly-up, Brady said, "There were missed opportunities."

Patriots-Jets: 5 thoughts from after the game

I agree that the penalty calls made Butler look much worse than he actually played. He didn't have a great game, but I don't think he deserves all the ire he's getting from fans right now.

He certainly didn't deserve to be blatantly made fun of by Edwards... twice. Thanks for the non-call on that second one by the way refs.

Thank you for the kind words. :)

On Butler's first of two PIs on the same series, an excellent play would have been for him to get the INT, and a solid play would have been for him to break it up. The whole thing happened because the ball was a bit underthrown.

Thanks for the lucid observations, DI. Hard to argue with much if any of that.

I actually take solace if these problems are due to execution rather than systemic. In other words I pray that today's outcome is due to sucking rather than the coordinators.

Keeping the faith.

good post and I'll just remark on this one because it's one I remarked on all game long. We really got killed in the ST's play today. Even when it seemed Tate had a seam it would close quickly. They prepared for us well and they won the ST's play. I had the feeling that every score would be earned from hard work ... we never seemed to get the chance for some easy points. No easy points from St's and no easy points from turnovers were key for the jets.

If you blot out the receiver from the play, Butler looks like a receiver going to catch the pass. That should never be pi. But when there is contact, whether or not the official is in position to see what happens is a crapshoot. The rule of thumbshould be if you dont have a good angle to see it, its a non call, but unfortunately a bad angle usually distorts it into looking like pi when it isnt

Yeah.... I was going to mention the turnover battle, but I figured that was one that would be pretty universal and I was going long enough in the post already. It's very tough to win games when you're -3 in the turnover battle.

Speaking of S/T's, it sure would have been nice if Arrington had not run into the Jets' return man on about the 5-yard line.

Great post but this is the point that IMO was a big problem. I watched the game at Buffalo Wild Wings with a friend watching the Texans game. (but he was seeing enough of the Pats game to know what was going on) Even he was noticing how Brady was forcing passes to Moss in the 2nd half.

As you say, maybe the other WRs simply weren't getting open. But it does definitely feel like Brady has lost some of his patience and is forcing too much to Moss.

thats OK, edwards's actions were illegal and penatly worthy, but i sure hope butler CLEARLY remembers edwards next time he comes trotting to NE,

as a matter of fact, i wish ALL the jets would have taken up a similar routine towards every single patriot, they sure deserved it with the level of play they brought yesterday

they were ALL worth making fun off

Re: whats up with finishing a game!

Maybe its not time to hit the panick button, but even after last weeks win this made me nervous for this years pats.

For two weeks in a row the Pats just cant seem to make the adjustments at half time so they can improve on their 1st half performance..

this was a huge problem last year and for me is something to be concerned about. Teams like the Jets that can go into half time with a close game know they have an opportunity to step it up on the Pats in the 2nd half.

being able to finish a game is going to be something I think the Pats are going to need to accomplish to make the Playoffs..

Re: whats up with finishing a game!

On the second drive, NE's first scoring drive, both times the RBs were stopped behind the LOS - Vollmer appeared to have been beaten to the inside by his man.

Does anyone else think Ed Hochuli's guns are a couple sizes smaller? :confused2:

What made Brady great before Moss and Welker showed up was his ability to spread the ball around to multiple receivers all game long. In the Givens/Branch days the opposing defense never really could tell where the ball was going. I used to think that's the way Brady liked to do things stylistically, but it's becoming pretty obvious that he distributed that way because there was no true #1 WR on the team.

If he can get back to his old distributing the ball mentality, this offense could really be something special.

These are some good thoughts, Deus. The team has some big problems right now, and many of them have been around since last year. We can only hope that Belichick makes whatever changes are necessary. Whatever he does, he'll have to do it with the personnel we have right now.

I still thought that the play calling was definitely a problem in the 2nd half. If they had actually executed the plays, things of course would've gone a little better. But when I can predict what plays are being run on what downs and from which formations, I believe an NFL defense can too. That is not going to help your execution.

The Pats were ridiculously predictable in the 2nd half. No passes from under center. Little to no play action. And almost every run came on first down.

I don't see much of a difference between Woods and Ninkovich. Same type of player. I think Ninko is smarter. He is still struggling with the physical parts of the game. That missed play on LT was an embarrassment. It should have been a tackle for no gain. He looks like a good depth option at this point, but not a starter. I hope Cunningham learns quickly.

Well posted Deus Irae. That's a fair summation.

Yep, not a fan of the playcalling. I haven't looked at the play-by-play, but I'm fairly sure the vast majority of 1st down plays were runs, especially between the tackles. The yardage was almost always low. I thought maybe they were setting up for a big play-action payoff on first down at some point later in the game. Never happened.

First half we moved the ball around underneath looking for the short routes making their coverage move. First 25 mins of the second half we seemed to start playing madden or something, heave the long ball and one will stick.

Then from nowhere we go back to what had worked and gotten us a lead and moved the ball, yes ultimately it died as Light was blown up by Taylor (again) but I cannot understand why the complete change in focus with the weapons we have in the slot.

Is this play calling or decision making from Brady, I don't believe the jets managed to cover everybody?

The other really annoying thing, if you're gonna leave Butler in the game then give him some help!! Double impact in my eyes, you don't make the guy feel like he couldn't cover Wilfork with his legs tied together and secondly you make Sanchez have to throw the ball somewhere else, make him work for his completions as time and again he looked left and had no issues connecting and connecting for either big yards or points.

If you change the coverage and still get burnt then it is what it is. If you don't make and changes at all, you deserve to get burnt
