Well I made it back to MA alive from the game today...some comments/thoughts from NY

Stadium: They have a really nice stadium. One thing i noticed..it got VERY loud there in the 2nd half. That stadium is built for sound which Gillette is not unfortunately.

Fans: was wearing my Moss jersey. Didn't really get any **** until i was walking out to the car. One guy said loser as he walked by us and i said excuse me? oh nothing was his reply. These fans are all talk. You can tell there is so much hate down there because the Pats have owned that division (and will again this year). One fan in front of us was making these stupid comments...i paid 110 to see this **** again? After the first drive then was praising Sanchez. He would also shake and get up and flip his seat up and down when they did bad..all the jets fans around him were embarrassed he was with them. They now think power has shifted in the division which is total BS after only 2 weeks.

Game: First half was a good game plan. Welker and Hernandez was killing it. Second half Brady tried to force it to Moss causing the INT's. IMO it was really on Brady tonight and not so much the D..yes Butler sucks but Brady could have overcame that.

Overall it was a different experience and i hate Jets fans even more now after it. Tough ride home however with the loss. Pats are going to need to start to win on the road and IMO will have to beat Miami in Miami in 2 weeks. Nothing to panic about as i had them losing 5 games this year...now they can only lose 4 more!

Forgot to add: When Faulk was hurt on the sidelines..most fans in my section booed him when he got up and made rude remarks while he was down...cant expect too much more from NY fans however

This is not a loaded question:

Are the Jets very strict about fighting, etc, in their stadium? That's one thing Kraft changed when he came in. Before there was more action in the stands then on the field. Now if you're caught fighting or causing problems, your season tickets are gone.

They stop serving beer at half time due to this...they always had fighting problems...its sad they cant serve beer after half because the fans want to fight the world for some reason.

So what did you see that we don't get to see on TV?

Was the jet's secondary covering our guys that well or was Brady and/or the line struggling that badly?

Seems like Brady was forcing it to Moss as has been mentioned in another thread?

Don't most stadiums do something similar? I may be wrong. I thought Gillette stops serving after the 3rd quarter, but I don't recall exactly because I'm too cheap and nervous to buy many beers while watching games there anyway.

I'm pretty sure it is universal throughout the NFL now by the start of the 4th quarter. There may be a few that are still shutting the tap off at half time; that may be due to the later start today.

I posted in this thread before the game, so back again

Glad you did not have any issues

I sat behind and in front of several groups of Pats fans. I didn't see anything worse than what I get in NE with my Jets jersey (that is, the occasional taunt which is part of the fun, a few ''sit downs'' when the pats made a big play, etc)

There was nothing close to a fight, brawl, etc.

Now, granted I am lower level, not in the 300's

But I thought the game was very civil.

Curious.............


1) Were there a lot of NE fans there?
-How many, what percent would you say they had?


2) Compared to when the Jets are in NE, how did this compare?
-Similar, more, or less?


3) On TV, from what I heard and saw, I was surprised. I would expect NE to have a ton of fans...anywhere from 15-25% of the crowd.
Why?
Simple
-NE is a major sports market, and the Jets are the closests venue
-Heck NE has fans in Fairfield County, CT which is 90 mins away
-When Boston teams come into New York (like the Red Sox) they usually have a large presence you can see and hear

Therefore, given that NE is in a major, nearby sports market that has history of traveling well, and their success of the past decade, I would think they would be well represented.

On TV though, it didn't seem that way. All I saw was mainly a few speckles of Pats blue in a sea of green. When the Pats scored a TD...some noise...but nothing loud.
See when the Cowboys or Eagles are playing the Giants, there are usually a lot of vocal fans for them.
I don't get why the Pats, playing the Jets who have a smaller fanbase and market share, wouldn't have the same problem.
Heck, when the Jets are home against the Steelers you hear a large vocal cheering...and PIT is much farther away than Boston or CT.


A. Was this the case?
B. If so...why?
-Is it just that Boston, in terms of football, just not the same traveling fanbase that they are in other sports (Red Sox/Bruins/Celtics) or like Philly and Dallas are for football?

I was not there but a few things to consider:

The cameras can (and often do) paint a deceiving picture. They'll find a fan for his expression after a score. And since the Jets scored more often than the Pats, there was little or no reason to find a group of Pats fans. Had the Pats won, I'm sure it would have been different.

In comparison to fans at an event in the Boston area, it has always been my experience there are more New Yorkers watching in MA than New Englanders watching in NY/NJ. I think the primary reason is that you find a much larger percentage of NY natives living in the Boston are than the other way around. I attribute this to the large number of colleges in the Boston area, and the number of New Yorkers who end up staying in the area after they get out of school too. Obviously Bostonians move to New York too, but not as many in either whole numbers or as a percentage of the population.

As for fanbase and market share, it is still New York. It is still a much, much larger population than Boston. One-fourth of a 15-pound pie is more than than three-fourths of a 4-pound pie.

Regarding Pittsburgh, they dispersed when the steel mills shut down. At the same time the team hit their glory years, so the fans became and retained their loyalty, and passed it down to their kids. It has nothing to do with them traveling well; it's because their fans left the area and moved elsewhere. Passionately following the Steelers is their link to their roots and the homes they left behind.

One last thing to consider is that regardless of whether or not is true, is that there is a perception that it may not be safe for an opposing fan in the Meadowlands. Part of that comes from incidents with both Jets and Giants fans at the other stadium. I'm not saying it is or is not, but perception will influence people's decisions. You mentioned the three other sports, but going to those games is not the same as going to an NFL game, especially for opposing fans. Venturing into a rival's stadium with your out of town visiting team jersey for an NFL game is not the same as doing so for a baseball game.

They cheered when Pennington got hurt vs NE. The Jets deserve every bit of bad karma they get.

Brave man, wearing a Pats Jersey at the Meadowlands. But, you got out alive. I think some of the "lowest of the low life" fans were weeded out by the ticket prices in the new stadium or it might have been a different story. Remember this is a fan base that acquired fame for asking women to expose themselves at halftime.

I once wore my hoodie on Second Avenue, near the bars where many congregate on Sunday afternoon, after the Pats beat the Jets and thought I was going to get mauled by drunken Jets fans...oops, my bad..."drunken Jets fans" is a redundancy...sorry.

I was also at the game, sitting in the 300s. (I live in NYC, so I go to this game every year).

A couple things, they built a great new stadium. They added a ton of suites, but still built the stadium up, instead of out unlike Gillette. So the stadium can get noisy, but to be honest the old Giants stadium was louder, last years game 2, the fans were much louder than this game. How the main gates, are directly open, and you see the 50 yard line when you enter is very cool. They have this wide concourses to move around, unlike Giants stadium where the concourses were thin, and made it impossible to move around the stadium.

There were a decent amount of Pats fans, not as many as during the middle of their run 2003-2008., but Pats fans always represent well at the meadowland s. Overall the jets fans were fine with the pats fans, mostly good natured stuff, every once in a while a Jets fans would get a little to out of hand when he saw a guy in a Pats shirt, but nothing crazy.

Now to the game.

A few things, Brady was clearly too focused on Moss in the 2nd half, Welker, Tate, and the TEs were open all half. When Poole got Brady's second Int, Welker, was wide open in the middle of the field, there was not a jet within, 10 yards of him. Every time the Pats brought a blitz, it worked, Sanchez was rattled, and could not make plays. When the Pats sat back in their zone, Keller, always knew where the soft spot of the zone was, and Sanchez threw it there, it didn't matter if it took a while for Keller to get to the soft middle of the Pats zone, the Pats could not generate a rush, and Sanchez never tried to throw over the zone once and Edwards had many routes where he went deep, he always threw to the middle.

When the Jets did spread out the Pats with multiple WRs, that is when they ran the ball most effective. Most of LTs big runs came when the jets spread the Pats defense out.

There were no holes in the Pats running game, none. Barry Sanders can not run behind this Pats line, but the line did an excellent job on pass protection. jets had very little pressure most of the game. Jets actually realized the blitz was not working, and in the 2nd half played a ton of coverage and zone. Which is why focusing on Moss was such a bad idea. Moss was doubled and bracketed the entire second half. Cromartie had safety help deep, and LB help short. The middle of the jets zone was there to be exploited. The Pats never took advantage. They just ran the ball into a wall for a yard, than threw deep sideline routes to Moss, when the middle was wide open all game.

Overall great tailgate, great stadium, everything was good but the game.
