If the Raiders can find a way to lose their home opener today against the Rams, I will REALLY start to get excited about that pick....an indication of how bad they could be this year.

I've been saying all ALONG that we have a shot at the Very First Pick!! :rocker:

I'm very nervous that the Raiders uber-easy schedule plus just enough talent will equal a mid-round pick. But at least Gradkowski isn't playing QB. That OL + J. Campbell is a losing combination indeed.

I don't want the 1st pick, who would we take that would be worth the contract? And if we try to trade it we'll have to undersell it since everyone in the league knows we don't want it. Give me a nice 5-10

The players union is weak. The situation of a top drafted player earning more then a league's MVP is not logical........pretty pathetic. Maybe there's a lockout, maybe not, but one thing is for sure, they will correct the $$$$ given to the top picks.
I look for a Ram win, Bradford can wing it.

Any new labor agreement is sure to come with a rookie wage scale aimed at controlling the costs for the higher picks. The owners want it and the Player's Union has already said they're for it as long as that money gets redistributed to the veterans. It's most likely the reason wanted the 2011 Oakland pick as opposed to their 2010 pick.

A rookie wage scale at the top of the first round looks very likely. But... there is much less certainty that it would apply to the 2011 draft. A CBA might not get done until after the draft.

That's ridiculous. With the advent of the Rookie Salary Cap, the #1 pick will, once again, not only not be the poison it's been, but will be coveted, and worth one HELL of a lot more than a 5-10 range pick.

Coach Bill II could parlay that single pick into a small ARMY.

Doesn't matter: It would be retroactive to the Draft.

A top 5 pick will be such a good thing for this team. What I want if that happens is the best defensive lineman available, or trade back to the bottom of the first and get a 2nd 1st round pick in 2012 or something.

Plus we just pass if we didn't want to use it right away.

There's no reason anyone should be rooting for a lower pick. It's in our interests to have the best pick possible next year, whether we use it, trade it, or pass.

Why would it be retroactive?

First round draft picks aren't usually signed till late July. So as long as the CBA is done by then we're golden.

Raiders inactives today include Bush, Gallery, and Seymour.

You guys are making large and uncertain assumptions. As much as a rookie pool looks likely, I bet the owners would give it up if bargaining it away would get them a couple more % points of total revenue.

If the CBA isn't done by draft time, do you really think Bill would keep a #1 pick if a rookie pool isn't an absolute certainty (which it wouldn't be at that point). And do you think he'd get top value in return, with such uncertainty? No and no.

No and no.

Wrong on both accounts, my good man.

Wrong on all four accounts, actually:

***

* We're making predictions, not assumptions. You evidently assumed we were making assumptions, and that's on you. ;)

* You have a valid point about the potential trade off, but a dubious Argument, I'm afraid: If you've been following this, it is clear that the players will be more than happy to agree to the Rookie Cap, for what should be obvious reasons: It redistributes Cap Money to them, and away from the Rookies, who have no votes.

* Therefore, of course Coach Bill will hold onto that pick: We all had Line of Sight to this scenario, 20 months before that draft, when he acquired the pick, which is precisely why he acquired the pick. And now you suggest that, with things unfolding precisely as expected, he's going to reverse course??

***

Interesting point about the uncertainty at trade time, though, which bears further discussion, I'd say: If there is no CBA by the Draft, any trading of Picks may be speculative.

However, it stands to reason that it's in the mutual interest of both players and owners to have at least that aspect of the CBA ironed out, by then, even if it can't be committed to paper: the more explicitly the new Rookie Cap parameters are laid out, the more $$$ the voting members will get in Free Agency and other new contracts, once the rest of it is decided upon.

Not looking good here either.
