Sources say Jets All-Pro CB Darrelle Revis may see time shutting down Patriots WR Wes Welker

In other news... Moss vs Cromartie or Kyle Wilson.

Moss statline: 10 receptions, 170yds, 3 TDs.

To add to it, i'd say it's pretty simple how we get Wes open against Revis.

Put him in motion and make Revis follow him.

I'd have a lot of fake screens to Wes setup. Get Revis out of the play completely.

If that is indeed the Jets' plan, then it may not be that bad of an idea. The last time the two teams met the Pats won 31-14, in large part due to the day Welker had: 15 receptions for 193 yards. Of course putting Revis on Welker that day wouldn't change the day Sanchez had - 8/21 for 136 yards and 4 interceptions - but I'll save that discussion for another thread. Point is that it takes Moss longer to run his routes than it does for Welker to run his, so from the NYJ point of view it may make sense to roll the dice with their coverage on Moss, with the idea their pass rush will force Brady to throw quickly regardless of who is in coverage.

This points to the strength of our the QB & Receivers, damned if they do and damned if they don't, Moss & Welker are givens and already give opposing defenses fits.. add Crumpler(to a lesser extent) + Faulk + Tate + Edelman(if he plays) + Gronkowski + Hernandez.. this is quite the receiving group...

Putting Revis on Welker is not a bad idea, but tired of hearing all the talk about Revis, one might think that he is a one man defensive team..

sure this makes sense in theory, but after watching the game last week, you have to admit Revis is the closest human attempt at super-glue to this point in time. He gives a small 2 yard or so cushion and latches down like glue. It is rather awesome the way he sticks with recievers on hitches and what not. give the man credit. At the same time, Edelman is WWII, and if he is no good woodhead could easily play the same sort of role in the offense. A Randy/Wes/Edelman or Woodhead or Hernandez/Gronk or Crump/Faulk combo out of the gun or under center would be pretty effective. this would also provide all sorts of fun options for formations out of the no-huddle. If you Edelman is a no go and Woodhead is out there, Taylor instead of Faulk would provide more of a run threat, opening up quick PA plays since you know the jesters will be bringing the heat.

If revis' sole assignment is to limit welker put it in the bank welker is not going to have a big day and i would pray brady wouldn't force the issue.

Revis is nasty point blank period but i do have faith in our TE as well as Randy to moss any corner not named revis consistently. I hope edelperson can go as well.

If Woodhead was a great reciever, than why did the Jets cut him to sign Clooney? I think you might be underestimating the value of knowing the plays and adjustments - Welker is great due to his ability to read the situation and know the response within the system (the same response Brady is expecting and can depend on). Even Edelman does not "read and react" like Wes. Welker, Edelman and Woodhead might all be "jitterbugs", but physical attributes are only half of the story - Ben Watson was an athletic freak and look at how that turned out.

I hope Edelman spent much of the offseason watching Wes Welker film to be able to continue his read and react education.

I think the plan of "shutting down" Wes with Revis is a great one (if it is actually true). It plays to the Jets strength (pass rush) and the Pats weakness (longer passes).

What people fail to realize is that last time Revis covered Welker.. He had 8 catches and 110 yards. Cassel through for 400 yards and the Pats scored 31 points. So its not like the plan shut dowb the Pats last time.

Which leaves Cromartie on Moss...IDK...I wouldn't be too confident with this alignment if I was the Jets. Besides, Welker is a different type of receiver than Randy. I don't know if Revis will handle Wes's route running as effectively as Randy's long patterns. We'll see.

Good point! How many team's #1 WR is a slot player?

Revis has mainly played against long route running WRs, could be a bad decision!

This would only be combined with the Jets blitzing more than they already do. Welker is our answer to their blitz. They must be sending the kitchen sink AND taking away Welker and praying that Cromartie and company can cover for the couple of seconds that Tom Brady will have. I dont think Moss will benefit as much as our TE's down the seam. I'm a little more worried that I would be otherwise. I know the Jets blitz like crazy anyway, but I see them kicking it up a notch this week.

I'm not convinced putting Revis on Welker is the Jets' best move. Revis may be the best CB covering guys outside, but is he good at short routes and over the middle routes that Welker runs. Revis lines up against teams' number ones, not slot WRs. I don't know if his skill set is suited to take on a slot WR.

Also, according to the article, on those plays the that Revis is on Welker Cromartie will be given safety help to cover Moss. The article says this will be on third downs. Which means the chance of the Jets blitzing on third downs will go down immensely. That will create match up problems with Faulk, Tate, Hernandez, Gronk, Edelman, or whoever else goes out to pass. The Pats will be able to send out multiple receivers in this situation.

I love the report's headline. It assumes that if Revis is on Welker that he will shut Welker down. I am not convinced.
