Ex-WEEI sports yakker Pete Sheppard back on Patriots’ site - BostonHerald.com

Former WEEI radio personality Pete Sheppard is back in the game nine months after the sports station cut him loose - with a new show on the Patriots [team stats]’ Web site.

“The Pete Sheppard Show” will air from 4 p.m to 6 p.m. every Tuesday on Official Website of the New England Patriots starting next week.

I miss Sheppard on WEEI.
He did a good job filling in for Ordway when he was out.

I would much rather listen to Sheppard than Butch Stearns as an
Ordway replacement.

Sheppard is also on the radio Sunday morning.

Sheppard also can be heard talking about Sunday’s Patriots-Jets showdown at 8:35 a.m. today on Jeff Katz’s morning-drive show on WXKS-AM (1200) “Rush Radio,” the conservative talk station that debuted earlier this year.

Good Luck Pete !

I wish him the best. But please Pete, no posting your locker room cell phone pics of Brady.

How long before Brady gets a restraining order vs. Pete? Personally, I never liked the guy because I cannot stand homer radio.

He made a huge mistep going after his own show on 98.5. Now that 98.5 has overtaken WEEI in the key demo for sports radio (at least for August), he had nowhere to go since WEEI will never take him back and 98.5 doesn't need him. Patriots.com looks to be big step down for him. He probably should have stayed put at WEEI since if Felger and Mazz continue to beat Big O, there might be a shake up on that show.

I hate the Patriots website. it's ugly, loads all sorts of crap you don't want and it's impossible to find what you do want, so I avoid it unless absolutely necessary.

I always feel like I'm missing something.

Now that what I'm missing might be Pete Shepherd, I feel much better.

I did not know that Felger & Mazz had better rating than the big show
in August.

Everyone needs a reality check.

I doubt it continues as the Red Sox ride off into the sunset and as
everyone knows, Mazz is a baseball guy, who shows little to no
knowledge of the Pats. If he can't go negative, he can't go at all
about the Pats.

98.5 has been gaining ground all summer. I think the Red Sox angle is more relevant to whether WEEI decides to ditch Sox talk in favor of Patriots talk more than whatever Mazz has to do with it. I think it is WEEI's loyalty to the Red Sox (they barely talked Patriots during training camp and the early parts of preseason) that gave 98.5 the edge because they went Patriots heavy except for 6-7PM. There has been a real apathy towards

I think 98.5 will continue to have strong ratings (they won the morning and midday ratings too). I don't think this is because they are good, but because WEEI is old and stale. The only guy I can listen to consistently and not get tired of is DA who ironically is the only guy who is getting beat by WEEI (which could change when the Red Sox games are over).

So Pete was fired for trying to get a job at 98.5?

That is the rumor although the official word was that he was cut because of budget concerns eventhough he was fired about three months before his contract ended which they paid out anyway. The rumor is that he approached 98.5 with a proposal for a morning show starring him.

He got laid off (i.e. fired) so he really didn't have the option to stay put at WEEI. Although if that was because of his (alleged) pursuits at 98.5, then you have a point. I always assumed it was simply because he sucked.

I was wondeing what Sheppard did to get fired/Layed off from WEEI.

Numie left the mid day show because they did not want to pay him
what he wanted.

He still shows up to fill in now and then.

Felger left for ESPN radio which canned him after a year.
He went back to WEEI.

He left again for 98.5
I bet if he ever loses that job, he will end up back on WEEI as a
guest host.

I would still take Sheppard over Butch Stearns.
Just for the record... I hear Stearns is a terrible
mason. He always like to talk about his humble roots.

Not to sidetrack, but I have to agree with Rob. 98.5 is so much better produced than WEEI right now that its laughable. I say this not particularly having an affection for any single host on the entire 98.5 station. But its just better run, better produced, better material, better format, better calls, better hosting, etc.

It's at the point where WEEI has to either change or become irrelevant at this point. The dent 98.5 has done on the key demographics in just a year is startling.

As for Sheppard, I always thought he was one of the lone bright spots on the Big Show. Unless I missed something, the Brady man-love was just a shtick, and a shtick a lot of us can relate to. When the Big O was out, the afternoon show was much better hosted with him - as he was much more respectful of callers, and took much less mentally unstable callers than the Big O does. Ironically, when the Big O was back in the hosting chair, that's when Sheppard went over the top and had his crazy moments.

Could not disagree more. Now I fess I'm a sporadic listener but have been driving and listening over the past couple weeks. On EEI I've heard Dale & Holley - excellent. Had Rodney as a guest. Terrific. And previously EEI scooped everyone with the Kraft interview on Mankins. Even the Big Show has been decent with LOTS of Pats talk. During the same weeks on 98.5 I heard DA who was decent but too cutsey, the incessant Kraft is cheap rants, Kraft wants Logan to grovel and screwed the deal, and this may be hard to believe but it was Sox Talk on 98.5 when EEI was Pats talk. Dogs and cats living tgether?

Bottom line, I've come 180 degrees from what I expected and was rooting for 98.5 to kick EEI's Red Sux ass. It hasn't. Au contraire.

I have to agree. i was listening to 98.5 for the past year now pretty exclusively. I have now gone back to weei especially between 2-4 felger and especially mazz is getting really old. mazz needs to be replaced.

Two things - one, Dale & Holley is by far the best EEI has to offer. It may be better than any show on 98.5. (Unfortunately for me, I'm hardly in the car during that timeframe...) Two - EEI does have great guests. But, in between those guests, it falls to pieces.

It must be a small sample size - b/c I listen to these two stations every workday from 8-8:30 & 5-5:30, for those time frames, WEEI is probably - over the course of a year - 75% Sox talk vs. almost non-existent Sox talk on 98.5. Despite Mazz' presence, they rarely, rarely talk Sox, which is a huge relief, as there is nothing to talk about. Part of it is he has his 1 hour baseball show after the afternoon gig as pre-game for Sox games (which ironically is on another station). But fortunately, I think this curbs them from dwelling too much on the now boring Red Sox.

WEEI will talk Sox no matter the season, and no matter how unpopular they are at the moment. That's what happens when your guests are Merloni and Buckley almost every day. I tune in yesterday, in the midst of this great Pats-Jets week, and they're talking about Papi's contract. Kill me.

I can't stand the Big Show. I just listen in the hopes they accidentally do something competent and interesting. The Whiner Line is horrible. Just what I want to listen to...drunken bozos attempting to be funny.

Sheppard has a horrible voice (to be fair, just about anyone apart from D&H does). I can't imagine Sheppard doing anything useful on the website.

Given that the month of August on Felger/Mazz was all about bashing the Red Sox, I don't know how you can try making this claim.

I know people do not like Felger but at least don'r lie about him. He was not fired from ESPN radio he left on July 10,2008 after 3 years on the radio. He left ESPN because his contract was up and 890 was going down the drain.

I probably listened to them every day in August for a half an hour, and I can safely say they rarely talked about them.

I can only speak for the 5:00-5:30 time frame, but really, they talked primarily Pats preseason stuff in the month of August, then general football stuff (Jets, Hard Knocks, Favre), and then probably even Celts/Bruins and even PGA championship before talking Sox.

Really, specifically in August, they gave up on the Sox and hardly mentioned them, so I'm not sure what you're talking about. They didn't have on Sox guests often, they didn't take Sox calls, and they didn't try to push Sox topics. I don't think you listened to them enough to realize this, since I know you are an EEI guy.

Since I was sick and had to take the month of August off of work I can say that they talk more Pats than Red Sox and I listened everyday and the whole show most days. I like Felger and yeah he is off the way but I like him and mazz.

Actually, I listen to both stations, to get multiple perspectives. I tend to rotate them around the commercial breaks. Felger and Mazz spent August pummeling the Red Sox. That's just reality. From Papelbon to Theo/ownership to Beckett, it was a consistent bash-fest. Both channels spent time on multiple sports, and claiming that Sox talk was almost non-existent on 98.5 is simply nowhere near accurate.
