Would you make Hoyer QB3 on Sunday?

Note: I'm asking what you would do, not what you think the Pats would/will do.

Pro: They can carry an extra player on the roster with Edelman as QB2.
Con: If, God forbid, Hoyer needs to come in before the end of the third quarter, Edelman's knocked out of the game as well.

Let me be clear on something: I'm not suggesting using Edelman as a QB.

My point is simply that the NFL allows players wearing numbers in the 1-19 range to be listed as QBs. So, is the potential upside of having an extra player available on game day worth the potential downside mentioned above?

Unlike some others in the thread, I don't think this is the most radical idea I've heard in the world. However, I do think its too risky for BB's taste.

Not to mention - as pointed out by stinkypete above - Edelman is a weapon at WR and PR in his own right, deserving of an active roster spot.

Again, he's not suggesting that Edelman play QB. He's saying if Brady gets hurt, you pull Edelman out of the game and go straight to Hoyer.

I don't like the idea, simply because if you're going to be forced to use your backup QB, you want all available weapons on deck to help him. The pressure on Hoyer would be high enough as it is, let alone being a WR option short.

What if Brady gets sacked hard during the first quarter and needs to come out of the game for two or three snaps, but can come back after that?

Do you pull Brady out of the game or do you have Edelman play QB for a series?

I think only 10 clubs are carrying only 2 QBs on the roster, so having Edelman as the emergency QB already saves us 1 roster spot on the 53.

As for the 45, I would leave Hoyer as the #2. He's developing into a very solid QB and in the event of injury, you'd want him in there right away. According to the rule, if Hoyer was the #3 and entered the game prior to the 4th, Edelman couldn't play. But if Edelman played QB until the start of the 4th quarter, you could insert Hoyer AND Edelman could remain.

But in the event Brady is injured, you don't want to get by with your real emergency QB until the final quarter just to save a roster spot, especially right now when injuries haven't taken a huge toll and you don't necessarily need that extra spot as badly as you might later on in the season.

There are still plenty of options to work with. If they did this, I doubt they would designate a player such as Edelman QB2, for the reason ctpatsfan77 mentioned, that they'd lose both Edelman and Brady if Hoyer came in before the 4th. Rather I think they'd designate a normally inactive player like #17 Taylor Price as QB2, so they'd lose the minimum if Hoyer had to enter the game early.

Here are some concerns:

1) All you're really gaining is a special teams ace, if Taylor Price actually qualifies. As the game against the Bengals showed, Pats have plenty of multiple TE packages they like they could use to make up for a few WRs going down.

2) You're screwed if Brady gets the wind knocked out of him and has to sit down for a series or play early in the game. Now you have to devote practice time to learning some kind of Wildcat formation for Kevin Faulk and Julian Edelman. Only worth it if that's a package anyway.

3) You're making a trade-off as far as free agency rules and practice squad eligibility is concerned. Now Hoyer is no longer accruing games, but Price is. The fact that Crable for example was always on the inactive roster is what made him practice squad eligible this year, his third. If Price were designated QB2 for six games, he would no longer be practice squad eligible in the future. Given that he's a developmental pick, is that an option the Pats want to take away in years two and three just to get him some ST playing time?

That said, I believe the Pats might do something if most of the conditions above work out. If it's a game where Taylor Price's accrued season status won't be affected, they've got an alternative QB package ready anyways and they need some help on ST due to some short term injuries, maybe the benefits of activating Price as QB2 outweigh the risks.

That would completely negate the purpose of the strategy, which is to have an extra player who would see action in the game. They could always have Price inactive and designate him as the 3rd QB.

That could be a decent idea. Once you develop your 44, decide who is your 45th and make him the 3rd QB. Could then use that man as fresh legs on special teams and rotation during the 4th quarter only. The guy would clearly not be a guy good enough to be a starter, but sometimes a not so good player that is rested is better than a starter who has been playing for 45 mins.

Calling someone's opinions dumb is not nice. It violates the golden rule, "do unto others as you would have others do unto you."

Even a person who may have suggested that Edelman wouldn't make the team this year is not dumb. Maybe a little nuts, but certainly not dumb.

That is of course correct if all agreed...BUT that was not my point and I don't think it applies here. And The golden rule is hardly something that this board is an example of.
As for Edelman not making the team..that is more debatable in my opinion...As you said

Really? Since Brady made the Patriots team, the team has played what - 16 or so playoff games? A couple huge regular season games (Dallas & Indy during the undefeated season), etc.etc.

I have never seen this strategy employed by belichick for any of the 20 aforementioned monster games that have come to basically come to represent the cornerstone of his legacy.

So for a random week 2 game against the Jets, he is supposed to do this? Do you think there is just one guy on the practice squad that is that good that the game might be lost if he is not in the game??????

I have an idea - if you need an extra roster spot to dress a player ,dont dress 4 running backs.......I'd rather go with just 3 opposed to going into the game with 1 QB.
