Re: SI Don Banks "Jets would be better off with UFLs Jeff Garcia"

Patriots and Texans shoot up Week 2 NFL Power Rankings - Don Banks - SI.com

Don Banks presents his early power rankings, pats at 4-jets at 8 and that is where the reference is to Garcia

I always thought Garcia was a gamer. He was tough as nails and put up good numbers for a nice stretch. He'd be better than Hill up in Detroit.

Oh it turns out Garcia is 42 already? Forget what I said.

Even if he is just an analyst writer, you have to admit that when a writer says a 42 year old QB is better than Sanchez that speaks volumes of what people think of this Hollywood kid right now

Pete Carroll was right, he wasnt ready and still isnt, they should have brought him along slowly and brought someone like Garcia in for a couple years. But Im not complaining.:p

Jeff Garcia was still playing well back in 2008. I don't know why he hasn't had any interest anywhere since, even as a backup (aside from that short stint with Philly last year).

Bodden must be gnashing his teeth at home thinking of all the career picks he's missing Sunday

I might agree with Banks. Sanchez looks like a QB who lost all of his confidence. When a QB has no confidence in himself and his team, he becomes a huge liability. I strongly believe Schottenheimer called plays to go down the field and Sanchez checked down too quickly because he was too afraid to let the play develop and went for the quick easy throw dump off.

That's a QB thinking about his % completion stats, not moving the chains for a W. Wait, did I accuse Sanchez of thinking? My bad.

On Monday night later in the game when Sanchez got sacked it looked for a moment as though he had been injured. My immediate thought was that Brunell would be tougher for us to face than Sanchez. I was relieved when he seemed OK.

One game is a pretty small sample.

I think Schottenheimer put too much in his head on Monday night, and it was self-defeating. But the kid has never thrown for 300 yards, and I don't think that's because he doesn't have the arm to do it. It's just not the Jets' game. Maybe that changes with Santonio Holmes hits the field. I guess we'll see.

Garcia's actually not a bad option for a lot of teams.

I'd take him over Hill in Detroit, Edwards in Buffalo, and Delhomme in Cleveland. Maybe even better than Anderson in Arizona and Smith in San Fran.

I'm surprised he doesn't have an NFL job somewhere though.

Were the receivers even open? Hard to tell on TV.

If a team is built on defense, running the ball, and QB game management, how can an OC "overload" a normal QB?

Sounds like code for he's lost.

I'm going on one regular season game, what I saw on Hard Knocks, and the entire preseason. The guy clearly lacks confidence and seems to want to throw the easy passes (even when Holmes was on the field during the preseason).

As for the reason Sanchez never threw for 300 yards, it is because when he throws for 25 times or more the Jets lose. They are like 1-8 when he does. Sanchez is not a good decision maker and tends to make really bad decisions when he airs it out. He can make a handful of great plays, but also some really, really bad one too.

I agree it is hard to tell on TV, but it really looked like he didn't give them a chance to get open. Even Jaws pointed out that Sanchez was checking down too quickly.

Last year, Sanchez would lock in on receivers and he is now trying to check down. Sometimes when it isn't a natural thing like it is with say Brady, the QB makes bad decisions and gets impatient for the play to develop.

Apparently there were in the 2nd half--what's his name, the guy who breaks down the film w/jawarski (Hoge I think) on espn was saying this morning that receivers were wide open on multiple occasions in the second half, and Sanchez would look at them briefly and then go to the check down.

Fascinating how this game might play out--so maybe variables. I absolutely think Sanchez will force some throws, and the Pats will get picks. But one game doesn't mean the Pats D is great, either. At the end of the year, if the Bengals are 5-11 and their offense is a mess, the Pats holding them to 24 will be less than nothing. So maybe they'll make a bad QB look good on Sunday. Or maybe they'll pick him off 3 times and send him to the bench for weeks. Who knows......can't wait to find out.

Preseason, HBO, and the first regular season game. Hmph. I stand corrected. Yes, that's a very healthy sample.

No one's going to know who this guy will be in the NFL until sometime around November this year. Even at that, the Jets are a run oriented offense tucked into a defense-oriented team, and I think that's the picture you'll see if you dissect the 2009 Jets stats. There's really only a casual relationship between the Jets record and Sanchez' number of throws. The Jets had two strong backs; one who ran for 100 yards seven times during the season, and another who did it twice in playoffs.

You're right about one thing - his problem in 2009 was his pick:TD ratio. I suspect that's why Schottenheimer loaded him up with check downs; to avoid locking into a bad play and throwing downfield into coverage. But the kid has been a quality quarterback at every level. I expect he'll learn. So, the emphasis for now is still on "kid."

As far as Don Banks' point goes, I wouldn't trust Jeff Garcia to make me an uncomplicated sandwich, let alone run my team.

Everyone in the NFL has the physical tools to do well, so Sanchez throwing a few good passes is expected. What most players lack to be successful is a strong mental component. It's hard to tell, but physically Sanchez may be better than Brady (I don't know about deep ball accuracy but). He's more mobile and agile, probably has similar arm strength. What makes Brady so elite is his ability to sense the pocket and make good decisions. I don't think a single Pats fan thinks Brady is a physical specimen at all.

Actually, Hard Knocks gave us far more insight into Sanchez's mental make up than we can get watching him on the field. He looks like a unconfident frat boy. The fact that the Jets had editorial control of what came out and they showed him so unsure of himself and unable to take criticism like a man makes me I wonder what the bad stuff that the Jets had left on the cutting room floor looked like.

As for Sanchez being a quality QB at every level, he hasn't been a quality QB where it matters most for him - at the NFL level. Playing a great game against Cincy in the playoffs, a so-so game against the Colts in the AFC Championship game, and a mediocre game vs. the Ravens doesn't make him a quality QB. He only played 16 games in college. So you want to talk about sample sizes, that isn't a great sample size either.

I would be MUCH more nervous about playing the Jets this weekend if they had Garcia at the helm. He's twice the quarterback that Sanchez is right now.

Here is Merrill Hoge's take after watching the coach's tape on the game. He basically trashes Sanchez for no confidence and over relying on Dustin Keller and basically ignoring other receivers to wait to Keller gets open.
