CLEMSON, S.C. - Clemson coach Dabo Swinney presented Boston College linebacker Mark Herzlich with a $5,000 check for the school's Uplifting Athletes chapter.

Swinney made the presentation Saturday as the Tigers (1-1, 0-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) battle Boston College (2-0) in the Eagles' ACC opener.

Herzlich is out this season battling Ewing's Sarcoma, a cancer most often found in bone or soft tissue.

Herzlich was last year's ACC defensive player of the year. Swinney also gave Herzlich a No. 94 Clemson jersey signed by Tiger players.

Uplifting Athletes is a group that raises awareness and funds to fight rare diseases.

Thanks for posting this. My impression of Clemson has been quite good since BC joined the ACC. Wish there wasn't so much distance between the 2 schools for the sake of traveling... hopefully a good rivalry can build up.

Florida State did the same thing today in the amount of $9,400 in honor of his #94...

These teams aren't just doing it because it is a good cause that brings great positive publicity and for a disease that could strike any member of their team, they do it as a gesture of respect for a guy who could be the difference between their team winning and losing had he been playing.

meant to post this during the LSU - UGA game saturday afternoon but got caught up with work. Heard Vern Lundquvist and Gary Danielson talking about it. Georgia LB Rennie Curran was so inspired by watching the College Gameday segment on Herzlich that he asked head coach Mark Richt if he could wear a sticker on his helment to support Herzlich. Richt said it was ok. They made reference of it during the telecast but I couldn't find anything in print about it.
