Official Week 2: Patriots versus the Jest Thread

I don't think many of us are surprised at the effort given by the highly over-rated Jets last night, but I'm not going to take this weeks match-up for granted. I still think it will be a tough game for the Pats regardless. After seeing how the "D" performed against Cincy and how pathetic the Jets "O" looked I definitely like our chances a whole lot better!!

We really need our Mankins-less O-line to have a great game, and Tommy needs to get rid of the ball fast. Forget the running game. Anything we get on that will be gravy. I want to see our three tight ends have the game of their lives, both blocking and receiving. I don't see Randy having a great game unless he catches a lot of underneath stuff and is able to dodge a few defenders. Tommy will have to be patient and take what is there (may not be anything there on some series) to avoid getting killed. One problem with the Jets getting embarrased on MNF is they will be looking to prove everybody wrong this week.

On D, we have to keep up some kind of pressure like we did in the 1st half against Cincy. We can't expect to be able to play prevent defense the 2nd half as I don't think we'll be up by many points. We'll really need to contain the run like Baltimore did to force the ball into Sanchez's hands and get him to make crappy throws that hopefully our LBs can get to, like last week.

Whew. Should be fun!

I agree that the Jets "D" line will be the Pats biggest challenge. They do seem pretty nasty. BTW, odes anyone know the status of Jenkins after he left with an apparent knee injury? Did he play again?

I would just throw the ball deep to whoever has kyle wilson or cromartie on them...It will either be a completion or a flag...lol

Really though we should be able to take some shots deep and I would love to see the Jests bring that all out blitz against us with 0 coverage....No defender in this league can stay with welker 1 on 1 and he will make wilson lose his jock in the process....We could have some huge plays if they bring that all out blitz.....This will be a game where brady throws it 50 times and uses the screens/short passing game in place of the running game....Revis still looks out of shape so I would take some shots to moss downfield as well....I am very confident after the Jests played a physical game on monday night that we will come in and spank them....

No he didn't come back....On a short week he might miss the Pats game as well...

offense: the pats should focus on the short passing game and lean on the rookie TE's to make some plays.

defense: force the jets to throw the ball. player movement as with the bengals will confuse the hell out of sanchez.

I can't wait. Sending them to a quick 0-2 start while getting to 2-0 would be too sweet after this offseason. But they do have a very good defense and I'm not counting this game as a given or anything. It should be a tough one. Go Pats. Jets suck.

I feel pretty confident about this game.

The Pats showed last November that they know how to pick apart the Jets' defense. Brady has far more weapons this time around. The Jets still have a great defense and we have to be concerned about it. The Jets will be without Jenkins and Pace and possibly Poole. They were on the field for most of the game last night and on a short week doesn't help them to recover and prepare for the Pats.

The Jets' offense has taken a huge step back. Sanchez has regressed and lack any confidence on the field. I have always thought that they tinkered far too much with the running game and last night supports that. I don't think Shonn Greene is good or durable enough to carry the load. Tomlinson looked good at times last night, but he is not the up the gut rusher the Jets like to use. I think their o-line has also regressed and it isn't all the LG position.

Don't get me wrong. I think this will be a tough battle. I just think this Pats team is built to beat the Jets especially a Jets team without any offense.

I only saw the second half last night, but the Jets kick coverage looked fantastic, and their D, if they can commit less penalties, has potential to be truly great. They can really dominate the LOS, even after the D has been on the field for 30something minutes.

That said, I think such a demoralising loss in such a physical game with a short week of preparation is going to make the Pat's job much easier. The Jets will be facing a Pats team with that showed a lot of creativity in play calling, and a ton of different, versatile personel packages on both sides of the ball. Compound this with a Pats team not having to tip their hand the whole second half on Sunday, and the Jets have their work cut out for them preparing for next game.

Besides these situational factors, I think the Pats O matches up much more favorably with the Jets D than the Ravens O. Pats screens would tear up the blitzing D we saw last night, so I believe the Jets D will have to play much more conservatively, allowing Brady to really test that Jets secondary. Sanchez is bad enough that the Pats can really load up the box and contain the Jets running attack. Pats should win pretty convincingly.

This will be one of those games where we hear...Moss has been taken out of the game...over and over again. Welker abused them in their second meeting with Brady working the quick pass. Wrecks Cryan may have to bring Revis over on Welker because Cromartie doesn't have the quickness and their Rookie may slit his wrists if abused two weeks in a row. I hope Edelman will be healthy...another quick pass target option for Brady is needed. Watching the Jets overload the line last night leads me to believe that the Gronk may see some quick jump balls. Also Hernandez may cause some LB confusion. I just hope the RBs are ready to do some pass protection, because the Jets want to torment Brady. Should be a slugfest, but Pats are a more complete team and Sanchez is AWFUL

I see BB's D geting some picks off The Sanchize in his short passing game. If we disguize the coverages their QB will fail to make the correct reads.

My one concern is protection of Brady. The Jets fans I met this summer on the cape see Tom as a candyass, always motioning to the refs far a call. Bleep them.

Just hope NEP don't play that soft prevent pass D (10 yards off the receivers). Which could allow Sanchez to develop a rhythm and confidence. As it always seems every year, in 2-4 games we make 2nd stringer QB's look like Canton locks (see A.J. Freely, Henne, etc). We need to get in their face and contest even the short routes. That will fluster Sanchez and make him once again look like the lost sheep he was last night. Without a feature back (no Thomas Jones nor Leon Washington) - Jests running game doesnt scare me. But they could move the ball if Sanchez is allowed to develop any rhythm. They do have people that can catch the ball (Keller, Cotchery, Braylon Edwards, Thomlinson). It is Sanchez that is holding them back.

I was really surprised Jets didnt put in QB Brunell in the 2nd half. It was so obvious that Sanchez was just panicing and dumping off the ball 5 yards as quickly as he could.

Jets O vs Pats D: Look for the Jets to try and establish the run early. I think we see a lot more 3-4 in this game than the big nickel package we used against the Bengals. However, our 3-4 will be played more like a 4-4 with Chung constantly in the box to stop the run.

Pats O vs Jets D: The Ravens tried to combat the blitz by often going up top which started to bring them success in the second half. I doubt the Jets try leaving all of our receivers single covered and come after us like that. Look for Welker, Edelman (if he plays), Tate (if Edelman doesn't play), Hernandez and Gronk to torch the Jets defense in the middle of the field.

The quick screen and draw plays will be key. Let the jets come up field and throw behind them. Know your one on ones and hit them. Most of all, protect Brady.

Jets are a 1 pt fave in USA Today, so we are underdogs again....

Technically by betting standards, that means we'd be 2 point favorites in a neutral site. I think the line is automatically shifted 3 points in favor of the home team.

As for the game, I think both ST units look top notch, in all phases. There will be some important plays made on ST, possibly some game changing ones. Hopefully those go in our favor.

Pats O vs. Jets D: I feel actually better about this after the Ravens game. The Jets defense looks as explosive and good as ever, but their corners after Revis do not impress me at all. Their safeties seem pretty good against the run, but mediocre at best in coverage.

The Jets have two options then... blitz and leave 1 on 1 matchups like Welker/Wilson and Tate/Cromartie or young TE/LB or S, in which case Brady will find the open guy. Or they can rush three or four, in which case our TE's can help keep Brady upright and when he has time he's deadly.

Jets O vs. Pats D: Pats will attempt to take away the Jets best weapon, which is their running game and short passing game. If McCourty and Butler play like they did first half last week, Cotchery and Edwards will be non factors. Play 3-4, stack a safety in the box, and let the young CBs cover the outside one on one in most situations.

I hate to use it in week two but the Jets are really in a must win situation in regards to the division and if they start 0-2 at home and then travel to Miami next week that's ugly. Plus they just got done with a very physical game and are playing on a short week.

Which brings us to the Patriots. Certainly not a must win game however if you want the early inside track and want to reestablish your dominance as the big dog in the division this is the game. This team was 2-6 on the road last year and couldn't finish teams off week in and week out on the road. There are no excuses playing a Jets team on short rest. There are no excuses playing a QB as bad as Sanchez. They need to step up and throttle this team soundly. The one thing they cannot do is turn the ball over like the Ravens did.

Certainly both the offense and defense looked better vs Cincinnati week one this year vs Buffalo week one last year but that's a bit deceiving because division foes week one are really tough and Buffalo has a history of giving the Pats fits on week one. The second thing is it was the Patriots last year who came in with one day less rest last year. Now the Jets have that burden.

They better be prepared for the crowd noise and their better not be those stupid signs to get the plays into the huddle. I want to see the same coverage against the Jets that we saw in the first half against the Bengals.
