Looks like Neal will stay on the healthy 53 then (rather than be IR'ed) and this makes room for Ojinnaka to officially be on the roster.

Did you mean Kazcur?

Marques Murrell released today.

This is going to really mess up the my 53 threads.

word has it that Zoltan is a very good athlete coming off the edge.

i wouldnt say that this is a good sign of the olb play, but a bad sign for murrell after playing in live action and failing...

again thats an assumption

Per Reiss via twitter

Patriots announce the release of LB Marques Murrell. Team had to make a roster move today as Quinn Ojinnaka comes off suspended list

I think you're right on the money. Still makes me wonder who that 4th linebacker is going to be.

I'm starting to think (as others have alluded to earlier in the thread) that we may be seeing a blurring of the line between ILB and OLB for the Pats this year. We may be seeing more of Mayo, Spikes, and Guyton on the "outside" in some formations and situations.

McKenzie can come up fromt he PS and Fletcher was inactive giving some flexibility.

Love Guyton. Fastest, best Patriots coverage LB, I have seen in some time, but I really prefer him in the nickel and dime packages. Just my opinion.

Damn, no Peppers.

The biggest surprise for me isn't that they have fewer LB, but that they are carrying 10 OL. They are carrying Kaczur with his injury and Maneri seems to be on scholarship and tagged for the weekly inactive list.

They worked out two guys last week. There was a thread.

Yeah, I was just thinking that after reading Reiss today. If we can set the edge with Tully and Ninkovich, or simply have four fatsos on the line instead, I think the pass rush can come from other areas. Why try to force it from OLB when you can get it elsewhere? Perhaps this is one of the new schematic changes for the defense.

I did wonder who was going to be cut to make room for that lineman (I can remember how to spell his name :) begins with an O and has a J in it)

No doubt he will be on the shadow roster.

This is about right. Tracey White is our 8th LB, the special teams specialist.

We have the same 15 front seven players that we usually have. Of the 15, three are young developmental players: Fletcher, Love and Deaderick.

I'm not sure what the concern is about. Murrell was brought in to compete for a special teams spot. He showed some skill at OLB in the preseason. However, Belichick thought so little of Murrell's preseason special teams performance that he traded for White. When Murrell was signed, a couple of fans came over to note that he was a special-teams only player.

We have six linebackers who we expect to count on. And yes, Belichick will develop lots of formations to highlight their skills). Yes, Mayo and Guyton will be seen on the outside in certain formations.

The really good news is that Belichick seems willing to count on Ninkovich and Cunningham.

Thats about all. TBC, Ninkovich, Cunningham ( with Crable on the PS ) on the outside and Mayo, Guyton, Spikes,Fletcher ( with McKenzie on PS ) on the inside.

3 OLBs on the roster leaves us awfully thin, especially when one just came back after a month injured.
I think another move is imminent, or one of the ILBs will start getting work outside in practice, or Crable actually has looked good and will be promoted if anyone is banged up.

You have given us the three possibilities. I think that there will indeed be blurring of the lines of ILB and OLB, with some of the ILB's occasionally seen outside. Also the extensive use of three safeties lessens the need for linebackers.

I am surprised I am the first to say this...

Its all because the team is to sign Adam Seward and start him at OLB

I dont know how safeties take away OLBs. OLBs are DEs in the sub package and we need 2 of them in there. We surely dont have ILBs who can do that. And I dont see which ILBs could be 34 base OLBs.
I dont know that we need a 4th OLB if these 3 stay healthy, but I dont ever remember us only having 3 OLBs.

Obviously Adalius Thomas is coming back. You heard it here first ;)
