How much credit does BB deserve for the way the defense played?

i was watching nfl tv before the games began today, and i couldnt help but notice how 3 of the hosts were making fun of how bb has taken too much responsibility upon himself now that he is managing the defense and that the defense would fail miserably today against the bengals especially against ocho and t.o blah blah blah ............
and to my surprise after the game none of the nfl tv analysts were praising BB or the defense the only praise given was to brady2welker combination..
i personally think bb deserves credit for the way our defense played today..your thoughts?

We needed a topnotch hands-on defensive coordinator to coach up this group of talented kids, expecially the young corners. We needed a top notch defensive game planner in order to mask the weaknesses of the defense (all defenses have weaknesses).

Belichick understood that this was the most important thing that he could do during the regular season this year, BY FAR. So, yes Belichick deserves a lot of the credit for the defense.

As far as the offense, he did his job when secured 3 talented tight ends and signed Brady to a long-term contract.

This team is BB's. He has his hand in every phase, from the way players are selected, to the way they are trained, to the way the professionalism of the organization is implemented, to the specific plays and schemes on the field. Though every aspect of football is a collaborative affair, it seems that BB's contribution is disproportionate and consistently more sound than not. More than any other individual on the team, he deserves credit for the team's performance. In other words, his individual contributions probably represents the margin of victory in more games than even Brady's individual contributions.

Belichick deserves a ton of credit, even more credit than in previous years.

It's clear that by being defensive coordinator, he has an even bigger impact on the defense, compared to previous years where he was managing a coordinator under his vision and supervision.

BB did a GREAT job, and deserves quite a lot of credit. The Bengals were quite simply outcoached today. I have no idea how BB took a bunch of rookies and 2nd year and got them to throw a lot of different looks and pre-snap shifts that confused Palmer, but he did.

Unlimited credit. Any time you have a defense with such a high % of 3rd year and under players in major roles look as good as it did before going into prevent mode, the coach has done an incredible job.

Today is a perfect example that shows that BB still has it. He is not nearing the end of his career, he still has plenty left in his tank. He is the best coach in the league hands down. No other coach in the league could have planned and executed a game plan as well as he did today with such a young and inexperienced group of players.

They were showing a lot of confusing fronts, with a bunch of rooks and second year players. Of the few vets they had, two key ones were injured.

Our "veteran" (and less talented) defenses of the past few years couldn't do this.

Simply incredible to construct a decent facsimile of our glory days veteran defenses in a matter of weeks. Expect some mistakes in the coming weeks, today just shows why he is simply the best defensive mind and teacher, possibly ever.

Come on guys, be real. Stop kissing Belichick's ass. He has absolutely nothing to do with the way the defense performed in this game. In fact, he doesnt even deserve any credit for the three Super Bowl wins, either.

We all know how much respect he has for the fans that post in this forum, including yours truly, that apprently know a hell of a lot more than he does, and this is where he gets all his ideas for his defensive game plans and defensive strategy.

Without us, he would be nothing. That's why he failed in Cleveland. He didn't have us.

And I am so happy that young players like McCourty, Spikes and Butler have the opportunity to pick up some defensive tips from us. If they had to listen to Belichick all the time, they would look like crap out there. That was Ellis Hobbs problem, he listened to Belichick and not the fans in this forum, and you see where that got him.

Now, coach, about next week............................

This was the first regular season game played by a good part of the defense. We played loose prevent in the later stages to chew up time. And about 60 of those yards came from Palmer doing a useless bomb at the end of the 1st half.

We did great. BB did great.

BB is getting the deserved credit for this defensive unit, but the result transcends BB's schematic plan. One of the most overlooked pieces of what makes Belichick great is his development of coaches. Developing a coach is significantly more difficult than developing a player. The level of aptitude between the two is quite different. To condition a young guy to be able to understand the pretty complex cause and effects that happen in professional football is a pretty tall task. BradyFTW (the smartest guy I consider a friend) and I have talked about this as both our real jobs revolve around being "the smartest guy in the room", and there is a much greater mental challenge coaching football than there is doing our jobs. In coaching football, you need to take a highly complicated and intricate scheme and deliver it to (let's face it) not so adept people. You need to get them to understand the concepts behind the play, how it will make them personally successful, and enable them to absorb something beyond their comprehension in very short order. Patricia has demonstrated an incredible ability to do this. That is the truest litmus of Belichick's greatness.

In the first half, the defense rushed the passer, they stuffed the run. They were communicating well, and they seemed to shift around like I haven't seen since 2004.

In the second half, nobody rushed the passer. No one did much to stop the run, I didn't see much shifting. This defense showed why they can be good, and why people think they suck. They looked so bad because of Butler in the 2nd half it was literally becoming Duane Starks bad. The Bengals seriously tortured Butler I think the dude is not gonna wanna see Cincinnatti for awhile. McCourty seemed excellent (considering this was his FIRST game) covering TO or Ocho, Butler on the other hand just looked pathetic.

I realize it's growing pains, but it's the pains that teams know about and can exploit. I hope to see a full 60 minute effort from the defense next week, and please, if one of our CBs is getting annihilated again lets give him some help?

I'm not not trying to be negative although I sound that way. One thing is for damn sure. This defense is more comfotable and communicating better than they were in week 17 last year. We're gonna experience growing pains, but growing nonetheless.

Very simple, dude. They got the win secured, took the foot off of the pedal and scaled back their scheme. It comes from the coaches first, and when the coaches stopped showing their schemes the players slacked off. That simple.
