Hank Gola of the New York Daily News previews the AFC East:

2010 NFL Preview: New York Jets must fend off Patriots and Dolphins if they want to rule AFC East

Gola thinks Brady is the best player in the division and Belichick the best coach, while saying "don't be surprised if the Dolphins end up stealing the division from under the Patriots' and Jets' noses."

STORYLINE: If the Jets weren't the chic pick to get to the Super Bowl before, they were after "Hard Knocks." But are they a bit overhyped, especially with a so-far sputtering Mark Sanchez-led offense? The Patriots have plenty of internal issues and what could be an unhappy locker room but they do know how to win. The Dolphins, meanwhile, are lying in the weeds and the Bills, hopeful under new coach Chan Gailey, are simply trying to get up.

X-FACTOR: The Jets defense is good enough to get them back into the playoffs. It will be up to Mark Sanchez to get them any further. Sanchez had a fine postseason but the wraps were still on him. At some point, the Jets are going to have to expand the offense and Sanchez is going to have to play like a first-rounder. He didn't look like one in the preseason.

Projected 2010 Finish
  • JETS: 10-6
  • Dolphins: 9-7
  • Patriots: 9-7
  • Bills: 3-13

The Newark Star Ledger thinks the Pats will win the AFC East.

NFL Preview: A division-by-division analysis as strong Saints prepare to defend title | NJ.com

Who will win: The Patriots clearly lack the near-flawless composition of the the teams that dominated the NFL during the aughts. They have holes at running back and in the pass rush, and a neophyte secondary. However, the Patriots still have a stranglehold on the division — they’ve won six of the past seven years — and feature the director (Bill Belichick) and leading man (Tom Brady) from their dynasty years not long gone.

Who could win: The Jets have revved up for the most anticipated season in franchise history with the premise that talent plus trash talk will equal a title. The equation might not be that simple. Questions abound: Can the offense, led by sporadically successful second-year quarterback Mark Sanchez, gel? Will Darrelle Revis show rust? Is Rex Ryan ready to lead a team to a title? Even with the variables, this team won’t surprise anyone.

You will know ... : Chad Henne enters his first full season under center for the Dolphins. He can rely on a bulldozing ground attack that was fourth-best in the NFL last season. He has a bona fide No. 1 receiver in Brandon Marshall and the firepower in his right arm to get Marshall the ball down the field. And, for good measure, a former No. 1 overall pick at left tackle, Jake Long, covering his back.

You might not know ... : From 1990 through 1993, the Bills won 49 regular-season games under Marv Levy and made four Super Bowl appearances. Since last reaching the postseason in 1999, the Bills have won 66 times, under four coaches, all since fired. Welcome to Buffalo, Chan Gailey.

Jersey connection: Devin McCourty, just 23 and the No. 27 pick in April’s NFL Draft, begins the season as one of the Patriots’ starting corners. It is yet to be seen how the former Rutgers standout will fare, but it is certain he fits in. No player in the New England secondary is over the age of 27. The unit’s average age is 24.7 years old.

Pro Football Weekly predictions:

ProFootballWeekly.com - Arthur Arkush's 2010 NFL predictions - Colts over Vikings in the Super Bowl
1. New England: Tom Brady regains '07 form, puts team on back and carries it to AFC East title.

2. N.Y. Jets: Clearly they're loaded, but I think Sanchez's inconsistency and poor team chemistry will lead to early playoff exit.

3. Miami: Chad Henne will flourish with a true No. 1 wideout, defense will benefit from Nolan's tutelage, but AFC East too tough for Fins.

4. Buffalo: Spiller is going to be fun to watch, with or without an offensive line.

ProFootballWeekly.com - Kevin Fishbain's 2010 NFL predictions - Packers over Ravens in the Super Bowl
1. New England: Brady has a healthy Wes Welker and a new weapon: tight ends. The offense of ’07 returns.

2. Miami: Henne has plenty around him to lead a powerful offense.

3. N.Y. Jets: Too many distractions to succeed in a loaded division.

4. Buffalo: Injury-ravaged preseason will not help the cause of a team without a quality QB or defense.

ProFootballWeekly.com - Eli Kaberon's 2010 NFL predictions - Colts over Falcons in the Super Bowl
1. Miami: With the addition of Brandon Marshall, the Wildcat won't be the only big-play source for the Dolphins.

2. N.Y. Jets: Lots of new faces, but Mark Sanchez's improvement is vital for the team to take the next step.

3. New England: Even with Brady, Moss and Welker, there aren't enough playmakers on the Patriots' defense to be an elite unit.

4. Buffalo: Depth at running back and talent in the secondary not enough to offset poor play on offensive and defensive lines.

Thanks - would definitely rather limit it to a minimal number of threads rather than one for every column written. Also makes it a lot easier for people that don't care about predictions to find a thread that does interest them.

Tom Jones of the St Petersburg Times lists the Cardinals, Patriots, and Raiders as 'three teams that will be better than you think'.

Tom Jones' NFL season preview - St. Petersburg Times

2. New England Patriots

It's stunning how quickly we've forgotten about this team. The Patriots went from one of the greatest teams in NFL history to playing backup to the Colts and Chargers and flavor-of-the-month teams such as the Jets and Ravens. But they get back WR Wes Welker, add TE Aaron Hernandez, a former Florida standout, and still have WR Randy Moss. And who's throwing the ball to them? A fella named Tom Brady, who is still one of the best QBs this game has ever seen.

Jones also lists the Jets, Bengals and Cowboys as 'three teams that might not be as good as you think'.

Everyone is talking up the Jets, possibly because of all the attention they are getting from HBO's Hard Knocks. But let's think about this. They have a second-year quarterback who struggled mightily at times last season, and this was a team that barely sneaked into the playoffs, won a couple of postseason games against traditional playoff chokers (Bengals, Chargers) then got blown out by the Colts in the AFC Championship Game. So let's not pencil the J-E-T-S and coach Rex Ryan into the Super Bowl just yet.

Part Two of Sports Illustrated's predictions focuses on the playoffs.

2010 NFL Season Predictions for playoffs, Super Bowl, awards - NFL - SI.com

  • Peter King has the Pats losing in the playoffs as a wildcard team, and the Steelers winning the Super Bowl over the Packers.

  • Don Banks also has the Pats losing as a wildcard team; he predicts the Ravens will beat Green bay in the Super Bowl.

  • Jim Trotter has Miami winning the division, the Pats missing the playoffs, and the Packers beating the Jets in the Super Bowl.

  • Jerome Bettis picks the Pats to win the division and end up losing to the Chargers in the AFCCG; he has San Diego over Green Bay for the Super Bowl.

  • Damon Hack has the Pats winning the division and Baltimore over Green Bay in the Super Bowl.

  • Tim Layden thinks the Pats will miss the playoffs (see his comments in the previous post) and Green Bay over San Diego in the Super Bowl.

  • Kerry Byrne has the Pats as a wildcard team and the Packers over the Ravens.

  • Andrew Perloff has the Pats winning the AFCE and New Orleans repeating as SB champs, over San Diego.

  • Dominic Bonvissuto thinks the Pats will miss the playoffs and the Cowboys will beat the Jets in the Super Bowl.

  • Overall the predictions for New England are split equally: three have the Pats winning the division, three think the Pats will be a wildcard team, and three believe the Pats will miss the playoffs.

  • All nine think the Jets will make the playoffs: nine as division winners, four as a wildcard.

  • Only two of the writers think Miami will make the playoffs; one as a division winner, one as a wildcard.

  • Not much love for the Colts: nobody thinks they will return to the Super Bowl; three think they will lose in the AFCCG.

  • Five say the Ravens will get at least as far as the conference championship; three have the Chargers going at least that deep, and three have the Jets going at least that far.

  • In the NFC Green Bay got the most love; seven out of nine have them representing the NFC in the Super Bowl. The most common pick for the NFCCG was the Packers over the Saints.

Looks like Peter King got this one right as far as the SB matchups are concerned.
