He's now moved on to the "consultant" phase.

"Effective immediately, Jeff Ireland will assume full control over all aspects and decisions in regard to the Miami Dolphins football team and support staff," the statement reads. "This was the intent of the structure put in place in the past. Bill Parcells will remain with the club on a daily consultant basis."

Statement From The Miami Dolphins | Miami Dolphins

PFT has some questions about the situation, for those who'd care to look:

There goes that franchise. Pretty soon, J-Lo's gonna be calling the shots!

Parcells is leaving about a year sooner than the old wanderlust usually gets to him.

In that case I suspect other causes. The Dolphins rebuilding is going slower than expected. Injuries have killed progress on the Offensive line, Defensive line and at OLB. Other moves have not worked out and the AFCE is getting visibly stronger elsewhere, like new England, presenting more obstacles.

By now Parcells expected NE to sink into the depths of 5-11 or so, on a long 5 year rebuild. Instead BB ruthlessly let go of the Super Bowl heroes, accumulated 4-6 years worth of draft picks for use in three drafts, and has used them wisely to remake his Defense entirely with quality newcomers in just two; and lay the foundation for an Offensive rebuild, by finding a QB, LOT, TEs, and WRs, all the while still producing double digit victory seasons.

He is 69 years old. Maybe he doesn't want to continue working 90 hours a week.

That would be my guess. Pretty nice cushy job having the ear of ownership and the management team, but not having all the responsibilities or blame if things go wrong. I'd take it if anyone cared what I think :D

So what team blows up their front office after this season and signs Bill to resurrect their franchise for 3-4 years now?

More time for the ponies..

Buffalo????
No, their owner wants a say in buying the groceries. Bill has to have 100% control of the grocery list.

Just my thought. The "Where's Parcells going?" speculation will commence in earnest shortly.

Kind of weird timing for this sort of announcement if you ask me.

I don't think it's weird...after the 2nd and 3rd round busts that got cut this past weekend and the Dez Bryant situation that blew up in Ireland's face getting as much distance as he can from him while still employed with them is the smartest thing to do.

I honestly think this is the end of the road for Parcells. He lives in West Palm Beach most of the year, so the "consultant" thing makes sense. On top of that, he doesn't have to put in the type of hours that he was required to put in before. He'll hand the franchise over to Ireland who will continue a rebuild. If the Dolphins aren't putting up double digit wins by next season, the Carl Peterson era will begin.

REALLY don't see him going to Kansas City or anywhere else, for that matter.

Jacksonville or Tampa would be the only places he would make sense given their state of affairs...and are still in Florida

This probably has more to do with financial planning (consulting contract can be designed more flexibly than an employment contract) and/or his health. He's 69. He's probably got plenty of cash. He's in the top tax bracket as an employee. I wouldn't be surprised to see him having earned a minority stake in the team that can be awarded and passed on to his heirs with lower taxes at his death than it would be if he took it as income while alive.

Awesome, the guy is good and I don't want him improving a divisional rival anymore.
