Previewing the 2010 Season by Tedy Bruschi and Mike Reiss for espn:

Tedy: In my opinion, this preseason couldn't have gone any worse for the New England Patriots. It started off on the wrong foot with Logan Mankins not reporting to camp and he is still AWOL. The Nick Kaczur experiment at left guard failed miserably with a severe back injury. You lose cornerback Leigh Bodden as he's put on injured reserve. Defensive end Ty Warren is put on IR. That's three legitimate starters and then you make it four with Mankins. One of the main goals in the preseason is to stay healthy and keep your team intact going into the season opener. The Patriots don't have that now.

There's also a short video with previews and predictions from NFL Live's Schefter, Hasselbeck and Wingo.

Tedy sounds reasonable and fair in his assessments. At least he didn't just say, "hey, it's the preseason and they're playing vanilla defense."

Thanks for saying that. Homerism is rampant here. The Pats have issues, people.
The good news is that every team in the AFC East has issues. Miami looked like crap in the pre-season. The Pats defense looked like crap in the pre-season (certainly the last two games) and the Jets offense looked like crap this pre-season.

If I had to give the edge to anyone, I'd say the Jets and their defense- but their QB would scare me if I were a Jets fan.

Can't disagree with Tedy's concerns here. Only quibble I have (and it's semantics really), is his use of the term "failed miserably" when describing the Kazcur to LG experiment. It makes it sound like the reason Kazcur is injured is because they tried to change his position, instead of just being another unfortunate circumstance.

Other than that, he didn't say anything other than the Pats were hit with injuries this preseason. Hard to argue.

I noticed the same thing.

Kazcur hurt his left tackle back muscles....now it should be clear:)

I don't think there are many, if any, who haven't noted that (salient) point, while still acknowledging the question marks surrounding the Patriots defense.

Bruschi's no-BS, cut to the point mentality is exactly what we could use on this team :D

i do not disagree too with Tedy: he is always correct

I always appreciate Tedy's analysis. The guy is just as smart off the field as he was on it.

But that is apparently exactly what he meant:

"You had Kaczur out of position and that might have contributed to his injury, because you are absorbing contact from a different position."

I love listening to Tedy Bruschi but I disagree with him. The pre-season could have gone much much worse. Brady could be out, Moss and Welker not playing and BB could be sunning his feet in the Bahamas. Not to mention the evolution of Edleman, Spikes showing up and McCourty looking like a very good corner, it's nowhere near as bad as it could be.

How quickly people forget Troy Brown being plugged in to corner and performing or Mike Vrabel lining up at tight end and catching touchdowns.

Question is with all of Bruschi's comments about the team being decimated by talent loss, where does he put the Pats in the division by week 16? - 1st,2nd or 3rd?

With all of his concerns I find it hard to think he really believes this team will win the division but probably can't find himself to say otherwise since so many Pats fans cherish the guy.

Can you imagine Tedy on national tv on ESPN saying the Jets or Dolphins will win the East?,I can't

It could have even gotten much worse than the scenario you just described....Brady could have revealed he was gay, Moss retiring to become a porn star, Wilfork ballooning to 550lbs, Belichick defecting to Cuba, and Brace eating Welker. So yeah, I guess it could have been worse....

I'm a glass half full kinda of guy and I've seen BB get this team up from some unreasonable positions in both depth and quality. We've seen this team go within moments of making a Superbowl with some incredibly average receivers, we've seen this team go 11-5 with a QB who hadn't started since high school.

The Patriots are in transition and have been since Brady got injured. BB is building. Sure we've had a tumultuous off-season but which side doesn't? Every team in the NFL faces some sort of pre-season crisis that the team is going to implode over. It happens every year.

And if Brady turns gay with Giselle as his wife, then wow. ;)

This is Bruschis fiinal conclusion from the article. Pretty non-committal.

From my experience, I've been on teams before where you look terrible in the preseason and come out gangbusters in the regular season. Looking at the Patriots this preseason, are there things to be worried about? I'd say, "Yes, there are." But perspective is important, too. There is a different tempo from preseason to regular season and playing four quarters. That's different than playing a quarter or a quarter and a half in a preseason game. There have been games where I've been on a team that played terrible in the first quarter, but by the fourth quarter it was a victory. Based on what's out there now, what's been shown, I expect the Patriots to be well coached and fundamentally sound. If you give the coaching staff this time to prepare, as well as some veteran players, it's plenty of time to address any type of problems they may have on the field. I anticipate a successful season.

Actually he already has. I recall a few weeks ago, I saw a blurb on ESPN saying he thought the Jets would win the division. I think he said the Pats would come in at 8-8.

As for this preview, I can't really say I agree with him, but thats just my opinion. I love Tedy to death for all he's done for us, but to me it just seems like he's trying not to be biased. Like when Rodney was called out and pretty much told if he can't stop being biased he'd be fired.

I agree with this sentiment. Personally, it's hard to say that the experiment "failed miserably" when the guy was lined up to be a starter and just had a run of bad luck with a back injury.

Well, I certainly don't know as much about football as Bruschi does (obviously), but I find this to be a bit of a stretch. It's not like they moved him from OT to DT or even OL to FB like Connelly has done. He moved to another position on the OL.

I can see not playing well because you don't have the instincts for the interior line, but I just don't see that contributing to his injury the way he says.
