Ross Tucker weighs in on Mankins Situation

He got a tweet asking why the Pats haven't done anything about Mankins and his response was that 1) Mankins called out the owner 2) Pats hold grudges.

If the Pats held grudges, they'd never have tried to re-sign Ty Law on Multiple Occasions. I find it baffling that this guy spends 6 months with the team and thinks that he knows the inner workings and though processes of one of the best Management Groups (Kraft, Belichick, Pioli, etc) in the history of the game.

Mankins isn't holding out. He's an unsigned free agent. When/if he returns to the Patriots, there won't be over half a million dollars in fines to deal with.

I think mankins got a whole bunch of bad advice and bought into a pack of lies, spun by his idiot agent. When I watched Jonathan Kraft tell us no contract discussions ever took place between him or his dad and the player - it was obvious that Mankins has messed this up beyond repair. I don't see it ever being resolved.

Good luck this year gunnails..............Woody has put it all on the line for this year, you guys have gone all completely in (at the risk of the next several years I think).

All good if it works out - sure going to get very ugly, very fast if it doesn't.

As sports fanatics, we are really lucky to have this rivalry with all the drama that comes along with it. Its all good!

Great point...we have seen time and again that BB goes out of his way to not hold grudges against players who want more money elsewhere or who are displeased with BB on a personal level like Ty Law.

What we don't see, and won't ever see, is BB backing down to disgraceful negotiating ploys which would set dangerous precedents not just for this team, but the entire league.

If players find out that they can act like total *******s and simply publically slam an owner and a organization in order to get their way, than guess what? It will be the new trend in holdouts. Not going to happen.

Can't speak for DI, but I'm doubtful Mankins will play this year. He has enough time in that he does not need another accrued season to become a free agent. Normally that factor would help an NFL team in negotiations.

So he can sit and have multiple teams bid against each other, choosing the best offer, or limit himself to negotiation with just one team. The third option of course is to play this year and become a free agent next year, but I don't see any purpose in that strategy since he will be a free agent next year anyways.

I really don't know. On one side, you've got a player that, by all accounts, is big on principle, and is reportedly not in need of the money. On the other side, you've got an organization that is a stubborn pain in the ass in negotiations (in both a good, and bad, way). This thing could end tomorrow, or it could last all season long. I don't see an end in sight, but these things can change in a heartbeat.

It's tough to decipher exactly what Tucker is saying: when he says "they" does he mean NFL owners, or does he mean the Patriots?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending Tucker - I recall him unnecessarily piling on with speculation and accusations during spygate - but I'm not even sure who he is referring to in that comment. Maybe he's bitter about his time with the Pats (one game played in two years with the team.)

I wouldn't say they hold a grudge but they don't forget when a guy bucks the system. Ty wasn't doing that. He was all about his $$$, and they accepted that about him because he always showed up and played and he was too proud to coast. And he lashed out at Bill which is water off a duck because Bill knows it's just blowing off steam in frustration over the business end of the equation. This isn't about Bill... Kraft is a tad more sensitive and his kids are old enough and involved enough to be defensive. And they write the checks... When you call out the organization you call out the Kraft's. What neither Kraft or Belichick will forgive or forget at least easily in this case is you put yourself above the team at a time when they were offering you a deal they generally reserve for a core leader. It's why Milloy had to go, and ultimately why Seymour got flipped. Wasn't just about diminishing returns with those two on the field, it was in the locker room (where Ty basically just changed his clothes...).

They are trying to rebuild or retool the core leadership of this team, not just upgrade or even maintain talent. As necessary as talent is, they know at the end of the day it isn't what wins in this league. Disciplined, committed teamwork is. Guys to whom winning matters can't stay away. Guys to whom every last dollar matters aren't committed to anything but achieving that. Core leaders are the guys who rise up and pull the huddled masses through the rough spots, like last year when their HC told the JETS their season was ovah...and guys like Faneca and Washington after checking his math told their teamates screw the bafoon it isn't over until we say it is...

There would have to be some pretty massive mea culpa's in public as well as in private before they inked Mankins to any deal at this juncture. Same goes for Warren whom I expect to be flipped next season if there is one. Leaders don't start worrying about and prioritizing with an eye toward their future in mid deal. Bill moves on from those guys painful as it may be and eventually the team follows his lead.

I am lucky enough to remember Joe Namath, so there is that,. And all the futility and disappointments of past seasons does make any success much more enjoyable. So I have that also.

Sometimes you just have to take what you can get.

And the reason I come here (beyond my obvious obsession with the Pats) is to get the opinions of rival fans, helps temper my expectations.

1 week before the season starts, I love this time of year, hopes of glory without the angst of reality that often accompanies the final season outcome.

Nope, not even apples and oranges with you anymore but you're so transparent I figured that would draw you out. Brady has never spent an entire off season persuing non team goals. He just spends a little more time at his off season home a decade in in deference to his oldest child's custodial situation these days than he did in the first decade. Ty always commuted to off season. He never won a parking spot. He dragged his feel on getting his degree or his hip fixed until he extracted all the guaranteed money out of his 2007 extension and then it became all about doing what was best for Ty Warren. They are not real happy with him as a result. Brady attended at least half of the voluntary workouts and all of the OTA's and helped rebab his slot receiver in his spare time and he's playing out the final season of his 2005 contract extension because playing football and winning and being part of this organization matters to him more than money and ego. That's why he will get his deal and everyone knows it. Some just resent it for some reason...

A similar approach might have worked for Mankins, although if he's as delusional about and fixated on his $$ value as some mediots project probably not...
