Yes indeed, in 6 more days the Patriots play their first regular season game against the Bengals. The paper today shows the Patriots 4.5 favorites.

So what does that mean, if anything?

Depth Chart

Here is the Bengals depth chart. How do the Patriots match up against them? Maybe it's time to start to start focusing a little on the game rather than second guessing roster moves, but that's just me.

Not a good matchup for the Pats D IMO.The Bengals should be able to move the ball via the ground and air.

3 points for home field so this game is basically a tossup...

A turnover or ST will decide the outcome.

Defense has to get their act together fast as Jets and Revis are on the horizon.

McGowan made his mark early last year by helping shut down Gonzalez. Pressure's going to be on our new S Page to do the same with Gresham.

Looks to me like our first 35-28 game is just around the corner.

We win! Don't bother playing the game.

I think the Bengals are on their way back to their familair 6-10 territory after one flash in the pan season.
4.5 is based on those Bengals, same old Bengals would have it around 7.5, IMO.
This one doesnt worry me at all.

On the ground, it is. But through the air, I'm not so sure they're going to be able to torch us like everyone else thinks they will. That offensive line has SUCKED in the preseason and Palmer has been running for his life. For all of our problems on defense right now, I'm sure Bill will be able to scheme something up to get a good amount of pressure on Palmer from all angles. Their O-Line's inability to pass block this season should be the Bengals' undoing.

It means the bookies don't quite know what to make of the Patriots.
And if it's true with the bookies then it's true with the Pats opponents.
I like that!!
The Bengals are a really good team and this will be a terriifc statement game for the Patriots. And when all is said and done the bookies and the rest of the league will see how the Patriots D isn't anywhere near as bad as the mediots would have you believe and the offense is simply unstoppable
How fast will it take the Bengals to call timeout when the Crumpler, Gronk, Hernandez, Moss, Welker formation lines up?? ;)

No way......... We're gonna suck this year. I say we get beat by at least 60 on this one.

Everyone knows it, just read ANY other thread in here lately.

The rest of the league doesnt base anything on the mediots.
The bookies base everything on what the general public thinks, so the media has a big impact there, but players don't listen to the media to tell them what their opponenets are, by and large, they respect every opponent and know that at this level if you take anyone lightly you end up on your @ss

:yeahthat: The D will get some work though, it should be a great game to watch including both offenses. I'll be curious to see how we gameplan defensively for this one, especially considering the recent roster moves.

Whatever--the season's finally H E E E R E:rocker:

Heh - -yeah, definitely lots of angst over B-list churn.

Indeed. If Revis replaces Sanchez at QB, I'll definitely be concerned. There goes the three interceptions we would have had.

Im not impressed with the Bengal offense.
I dont get why any one thinks TO is an upgrade.

TO's a liability lol. They're fun to watch though! But BB will still gameplan for them, it'll be interesting to see what he does.

Head over heart i'll be betting the Patriots in this game. The biggest problem the Bengals will have is their poor safety play will be taken advantage of for a lot off big pass plays. Remember the Cowboys game in 07? They lined up with Roy Williams and Ken Hamlin and all we saw was big pass play after pass play.
Expect the same thing here.

They will move the Ball with Benson and Gresham/Shiply will catch a lot of balls each on 3rd down i think. We won't stop them, but they won't score quickly, either.

Even though he was somehow voted coach of the year Lewis is still a liability in a big game as he showed in the playoffs last year. Pats by 10

Exactly.

That means that, other than home field advantage, the bookies in Vegas don't think highly of the Pats.
Favored by 1.5 on a neutral field against the NFCN defending Champion indicates they dont think highly of them? Are you for real?

I never said rest of the league or bookies base anything on the mediot world.
What I am saying is the bookies and other teams around the league really don't know what to make of this Patriot team. The league doesn't know what to expect from this group on either side of the ball. Neither do the bookies and that's why the Pats/Bengals point spread is so close. Personally I see that as a good thing for the Patriots.

Mmm...Vegas alwasys seems to get things right. Interesting.

Yeah it is:rocker: Interesting about the point spread maybe being more a reflection of some mystery surrounding this year's team than a reflection of talent assessment (or however Vegas comes up with it's lines), but very cool, I like that mystery! Long time coming too, at one point it seemed opponents had BB figured out.
