Ok, let's say the Brace can play up to the role of Ty Warren (not likely)

Brace needs to be solid against the run. He doesn't need to be at near Pro Bowl status, although that would obviously help.

and Cunningham the role of Woods against the run, where does that get us? Possibly to a 3rd and 5.

What they've got now is worse. After the first game, Warren has consistently gotten worse as teams have targeted the defense's wings rather than messing with Wilfork. 3rd and 5 is a gift with Warren/Wright/current OLBS.

Now we'll have to defend anywhere from a quick pass to a deep pass, a nightmare situation for our defense because of our inability to rush the passer conventionally or to blitz effectively. Teams have killed us the past three years passing in the middle of our defense and keeping drives alive. I don't see that changing this year unless Mayo/Spikes/Guyton all of a sudden can cover guys faster than my grandmother.

I actually have some level of confidence in McCourty/Butler/Mayo/Guyton/Wheatley or Wilhite. I'm not ****y enough to be bragging on that, but it's a group that has some real potential against the pass.

We don't have enough talent in the defensive side even if Brace and Cunningham turn out to be nothing but solid. We need playmakers in our front 7 and I don't see one out there.

Wilfork and Meriweather are playmakers/playkillers. After that, it's going to depend on how players progress. I'm not saying the Brace & Cunningham make the defense awesome. I'm saying that, if they aren't at least capable at their positions, this defense has the potential to end up being known as the Hindenbergs.

I am glad McKenzie made the team, love his attitude. He was my only cliffhanger, as I was surprised they cut both Woods and Alexander. I was thinking if they kept one of those JAGS that McKenzie was in trouble since I did not see them risking Fletcher being poached before landing on the practice squad.

Worked out good from my POV.

Wasnt BB gushing over him last year at TC? Anyway, he must have much more upsdie than the two jags that got cut.

Don't get me wrong, I like the potential of our young DBs. Merriweather is a playmaker, I'm excited about Chung, Butler looks like he plays the ball real well and McCourty if anything looks like he loves to compete. I think if we have even a decent pass rush these guys could pick off their share of passes. But I think more often than not, they'll be hang out to dry because of the lack of pass rush or pressure opposing QBs will face. You can't cover guys forever. Besides, even if they lock down their zones/players, the soft spot in our pass coverage has been where our LBs are. Mayo is looking like an old Tedy Bruschi out there trying to cover. For a guy that clocks a fast time in all the drills, he looks awfully slow out there on the field. He's thinking waaaay too much.

I just hope our young defensive guys develop significantly as the year goes on and are ready for the playoffs. We have the offense to get it done this year, it would suck if our defense sinks us.

The names of 53 men who will be receiving a superbowl ring in April or May!

Or, shown another way (rookies in blue, 2009 rookies in red, UDFAs from those classes in italics):

Can you update the rookies who made the team (as of right now). Just saw an article on the front page of MSN. Stated 7 rookies made an NFL team. I clicked on it assuming it was the Patriots. No, the Steelers. Writer states they kept 7 of thier draft choices. Was wondering if the writer understands that an undrafted player is a rookie. Anyway, it looks like we are at 6 rookies, is that right?

We have 10 rookies on the 53, actually 11 if you count Maneri.

I went back to Reiss' list of off season award winners and compared it to roster spots...
Winners

The following are this year's Patriots offseason award winners: Patriots offseason award winners - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

OL George Bussey
OL Dan Connolly
WR Julian Edelman
RB Kevin Faulk
LB Jerod Mayo
S James Sanders
WR Matthew Slater
OL Sebastian Vollmer
CB Jonathan Wilhite
DL Mike Wright

All but Bussey are on the 53 man roster, though we had a few as bubble candidates (Wilhite,Slater, Connolly)
Maybe this sends a message to the rookies.......

Bussey is the only one who was really in question, except maybe Slater.
How is Connolly, the starting LG a bubble candidate?
