Agent: Patriots claim OT Maneri -- espnBoston

The Patriots have claimed offensive tackle Steve Maneri off waivers from the Houston Texans, agent Ed Wasielewski said on Twitter.

Maneri (6-7, 290) is a rookie out of Temple who played tight end in college. NFL teams had been interested in him as a tight end and tackle in the pre-draft process.

After going undrafted, Maneri elected to sign with the Texans because he wanted to play tackle. He lined up primarily at left tackle in the preseason.

Reiss also notes the Pats will have to make a roster move in order to make room for Maneri.

Congrats to offensive tackle Steve Maneri who was claimed by the #Patriots. #NFL

Maneri was signed as an undrafted free agent last May. He was a tight end at Temple but is listed as an offensive tackle. Apparently the Texans were hoping to sign him to their practice squad: http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Texans-finalize-roster-cuts.html&team=121

Picking up from the waiver claims thread...here some more background on the newest Patriot:

FWIW, the consensus on him among Texans fans seems to be that they fully expected him to be cut, but hoped he'd clear waivers to the P.S.

Played TE in college but was being converted to OT by the Texans.

Played at Temple. Is 6'7 and 290 lbs. (has put on 25 lbs since his Pro Day in March)

Does he have to go to the 53 if he gets claimed on waivers or can he go straight to the PS?

Yep, so a cut should be coming. But there' no requirement to keep him on the 53 for any length of time; he could be gone tomorrow.

Waiver claims go to the 53 man roster. Not to the Practice Squad.

Can he rush the passer?

Could you give a brief synopsis of what is written about Maneri.
Thanks

Huh, now I can't either -- looks like a server error. Here's the rundown:

Height: 6071
Weight: 265 (but he's been packing on the pounds since!)
40 Yrd Dash: 4.84
20 Yrd Dash: 2.74
10 Yrd Dash: 1.69
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 23
Vertical Jump: 28
Broad Jump: 08'04"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.50
3-Cone Drill: 7.55

Tough kid who was an excellent blocking TE and has very long arms to go with his height. Was considered borderline draftable as an OT conversion.

So he is faster than Spikes? Move him to defense :bricks:

Thanks Patchick.
Much appreciated

So, we're still waiting to hear who got cut for this guy, right?

I am JACKED that we got this guy.

He is one my BINKIEST Binkies!! :D

From my Write Up in April, when I was pimping him as a Tight End:

Steve Maneri is a blocking BEAST. He is a 6’6” GORILLA with a real PASSION for blocking. He’s Strong, he’s Compact, he’s FEROCIOUS, and he’s Agile: He DEMOLISHES the enemy, and he takes great pleasure in chasing them down field to find a second block, producing big play after big play!

If this guy can master about 300 pounds of meat on that frame ~ and he sure as hell can ~ his exceptional athleticism, tremendous center of gravity, and FEROCIOUS appetite for punishing Defenders could produce an extraordinary Right Tackle, in a couple of years, just in time for Sebastian The Great to seize the Left Tackle gig from the venerable Matt Light.

Scar worked him out before the draft, now that I'm reminded of who he is I'm not surprised by this move.

COOL.

Getting a TAD ahead'f myself, here...But the long-term "Tackle Eligible" possibilities are kind'f cool...

Sounds like he's got a nice project on his hands. Any word on who got cut? Was it Slater?

I'm guessing the cut will be one of these guys: BJGE, Fletcher, White
