Any guesses for the practice squad? Obviously some of these cut players could end up elsewhere, and the Pats could also sign another team's players that have been cut too.

QB: Zac Robinson -- seems like it would make sense to keep a 3rd QB for the scout team, and as somebody who has at least seen the playbook for injury insurance.
RB: Chris Taylor, Thomas Clayton -- not sure of their PS eligibility, but with the contracts of all five roster RBs expiring this year, and three older guys at this position, it probably makes sense to have one RB on the PS.
WR: Darnell Jenkins, Buddy Farnham -- both had decent camps.
TE: Rob Myers, Carson Butler -- with Crumpler on the downside of his career, it would make sense to groom another player at this position.
OL: Ted Larsen, Rich Ohrnberger, Thomas Welch, George Bussey -- I'm guessing it would be two from this group, but which ones? These guys are on the bubble for the second time within 24 hours.

DL: With Love and Deaderick making the roster, there's nobody that was cut as a PS candidate - though that could change when Ojinnaka returns.

QB - I don't see the Pats keeping Robinson. He made Rohan Davey look like Randall Cunningham..

RB: I wouldn't be surprised to see the Pats go outside the organization for a RB.

WR: If Jenkins doesn't get signed by another team to their roster, I'll be surprised. The kid played his heart out and really showed he can do well in the league as a 4th WR.

DL: The Pats will probably go outside the organization for this. They tend to want to keep on around.

S: I wouldn't be surprised to see Brown signed by another team. Hopefully he'll stick around.

I'd be kinda surprised to see Robinson back on the PS. He didn't look like he anything close to NFL QB armstrength in the preseason.

My guesses:

Jenkins, Larsen, Welch, Bussey and Brown. The rest will be pick-ups from other teams. It also wouldn't surprise me to see either Love or Fletcher cut in the next few days and replaced by a vet and then resigned to the PS.

Yeah, I believe I'll adjust my assessment of Robinson. The Pats had only two quarterbacks on their 53-man roster last year with none on the practice squad, so they have a precedent for going with only two QBs on their 61-man team.


By the way, here is a list of the players that began 2009 on the Pats' practice squad:

Out of that list, I really don't see Jenkins making it back to the practice squad. At the very least, the guy has speed and I can see a coach out there that truly believes he can make him a better route runner. It wouldn't shock me to see the Raiders take a look at him. It wouldn't shock me to see Sergio Brown return for a shot at the practice squad.

Scheme can only do so much. Somewhere along the way, you need talent. Removing Brace and Cunningham (both obviously question marks to the fans at this point), take a good look at that four outside positions in the front seven against the run.

We are totally blind on Cunningham.
Brace, IMO, showed physical dominance, plus football skill in shedding and moving purposefully (biggest flaw in most DLs that struggle in 2 gap) toward the ball, which isnt a 'flash' type of thing, so I am very encouraged about him even if seeing more of it would be reassuring.

agreed...it looks, from my perspective, to be undertalented. This is where the trust in the coaching capabilities comes in and I still do trust BB.THAT is what is on ANY players shoulders in this scheme. Let's not forget, we got Vrabel from Pittsburgh where he was a backup without a chance to start. In BB's scheme, he became a dominant player for a few years

Right now, teams can pick either end of the defensive line to run at, and they'll be looking at a DE that can't stop them and an OLB that can't set the edge. Wilfork is all but useless right now, because teams can just run wide of him. We saw that in both the Rams and the Giants games. It's why cutting Woods doesn't make sense to me at this point.

I am glad McKenzie made the team, love his attitude. He was my only cliffhanger, as I was surprised they cut both Woods and Alexander. I was thinking if they kept one of those JAGS that McKenzie was in trouble since I did not see them risking Fletcher being poached before landing on the practice squad.

Ok, let's say the Brace can play up to the role of Ty Warren (not likely) and Cunningham the role of Woods against the run, where does that get us? Possibly to a 3rd and 5. Now we'll have to defend anywhere from a quick pass to a deep pass, a nightmare situation for our defense because of our inability to rush the passer conventionally or to blitz effectively. Teams have killed us the past three years passing in the middle of our defense and keeping drives alive. I don't see that changing this year unless Mayo/Spikes/Guyton all of a sudden can cover guys faster than my grandmother.

We don't have enough talent in the defensive side even if Brace and Cunningham turn out to be nothing but solid. We need playmakers in our front 7 and I don't see one out there.

Brace doesn't NEED to play up to the level of Ty Warren, or anyone else for that matter. He just needs to be himself. Demand double teams, free up the OLB, stuff the run, and get a push into the backfield against the pass. If he can do all of the above (basic duties for a DE in a two gapping 3-4) at anything approaching a commendable level, he'll be a reliable starter compared to everything else we have at the position.
