You are telling us without any info that Cunningham is going on IR, then you are suggesting that because he is going to IR which you have no proof is going to happen that we should have drafted another guy for the outside.

In general, the IR folks go in the first cutdown. I wouldn't expect to see any rookies on IR at this point.

I dont think its likley that Cunningham will be IR'd if he is at practice, even if not in pads.
But we seem to have a lot of closet Jet fans on the board hoping for it so they can bltch about a draft choice.

Why not? All reports were he was doing very well, working with the 1s and looking good before he was injured.
Surely you cant be saying that the misfortune of sustaining an injury means he can't be a good player?

If Cunningham isn't legitimately hurt, he's not going to IR. There's always a reason why a rookie goes on IR, and it's not because Belichick just wants to "redshirt" him. Given the depth at OLB, if Cunningham is healthy, then he plays. Given the reports out of TC on the guy, he maybe even starts.

I would have rather had Dunlap, personally. But Cunningham is still a good pick, IMO. And I'm saying that as a Gator fan as well as a Patriot fan.

I dont recall stashing a player on IR ever working out, if in fact any player ever really was stashed.
It makes for a nice story to act as if BB outsmarts people by keeping players away from other teams by making up injuries, but the facts dont support it.
1) There probably is not a player alive who would rather sit out a year on IR than get cut so he can sign with another team
2) If he isnt good enough to sign with another team and make it, then he is useless to us anyway
3) Football players who sit out a full year, have a very rough road back. Football players not good enough to make the 53 man roster proably could never overcome it.
4) And again, why would any player agree to be IR'd if they aren't really injured? The team is not allowed to do it, so the player would have to be in on the phony injury, and none would go along. Its not like athletes good enough to play at this level would accept someones assessment that they can't make any of the other 31 teams so the best thing for them is to willingly sit out a year and come back next year to compete for the same job they were just told they werent good enough for.
5) The only guy who would go for this is a guy who truly knows no one would want him so he sucks up a year of pay, but why would we want to pay that guy?

Seems like he's being pessimistic just for the sake of being pessimistic. Nothing wrong with that, but you should probably just move on.

It really won't make a difference to the career of Cunningham who will in most likelyhood be a non factor in his rookie season since missing quite a bit of field time thus most likely not to see the field too often.

We can judge him by late next season to see what we got here,until then it simply is a non issue IMO,he probably won't make a difference in a game one way or the other but to add a name on the roster at LB in 2010.

Is stating you hope he will be decent but dont have a good feeling, which would seem to indicate you dont think he will be decent.

I dont know about that. If he were playing with the 1s, what did he miss maybe 100 snaps, if that.
The OLB position is a good one to split duties at. There will be a ton of opportunities for him to get on the field to rush the passer. Really, playing DE in the nickel or dime is just all raw ability, there arent responsibilities to learn and get used to. There are also a lot of opportunities to sub in in the base too. Realistically in a month he could get to right where he would have been with a full camp.
I think it would be very reasonable to work him back in over the first 1/4 to 1/2 of the season and have him playing a real role the rest of the way.
Of course he has to actually get healthy first.
Really, I dont think its a stretch to say if he is healthy he is at least among the most talented players at his position, so its not like it would be a tremendous risk to put him on the field.

Same here. I say it quite often, but I've had a chance to watch them play in person and Dunlap is a beast. BB probably stayed away because of some of the off-field issues that seemed to follow the kid, specifically the incident here in Gainesville where he fell asleep at the wheel at a red light after driving home drunk from the club.
