Why was the middle of the defense so open?

Yes, I appreciate a professional team. Good article on Upton Bell still available.

Here, Uppie leaves for his first meeting and his staff screws up and makes the whole team free agents.
The first major event of my tenure was the league meeting held in Palm Beach in March 1971. Before I left, I instructed my staff to send out option letters, an automatic procedure by which every team renews the options of each player under contract. Back from Florida a week later, I got a call from the attorney for Phil Olsen, a former first-round-pick defensive lineman who had previously told me he wanted to leave the team.

"Thanks, Upton," said the attorney. "It's wonderful that Phil's a free agent."

"What do you mean?" I said. "He's under contract."

"No. He never got his option letter, so I'm declaring him a free agent."

Turned out it wasn't only Olsen's letter that had not been sent. None of them had. And with the deadline past, every player was technically a free agent. The whole team. I had been in Boston for barely a month, and my entire team was gone. The saving grace was that, as far as I could tell, the only player who recognized this was Olsen.

Bucko Kilroy was hired from the Cowboys to run my scouting, and when I told him the situation, he was speechless. "If we send them an option letter now," I said, thinking aloud, "it will call it to their attention. Why don't we just send them all new contracts?" So we did, even giving some players a little bonus, which shocked more than a few since the Patriots franchise wasn't exactly known for its generosity. The whole thing took three months. Ninety days of getting up each morning wondering if this was the day the gaffe would blow up. But it never did.

I never thought Bruschi would amount to anything much more than special teams...too small, too slow..etc etc

Isn't that what they're calling Mayo now?

I distinctly remember a few posters on the game thread calling Mayo out for being slow.

Yeah, I sat on cold bleachers, too and I wore a Pats shirt proudly in 1988 and 1994. I guess that A) I'm spoiled now, and B) I'm anxious because I don't want the TFB+BB window to close before they can put together a strong enough squad to make some more deep runs.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I know BB/TB will get at least one more SB, maybe two.

Then it's over. All good things come to an end.

I'll take that deal right now.

Why was it so open?
Well if your trusted ILB decides to broadcast private scrimmage sessions to the whole world, every team will know your limitations and exploit it.

On the first pass play to TE Kevin Boss over the middle both Mayo and Spikes were sucked in by play action while the secondary was apparently in Cover Two leaving that huge hole in the middle. TBC read the play action, but with Boss lined up in the slot he wasn't in a good position to jam him off the LOS, and his hesitation while reading the backfield gave Boss a head start he was unable to overcome. It was just a good play call against the defense and nothing more to do. Kudos to Chung for crashing in quickly and limiting the YAC with a solid tackle.

Thanks for the insight, Box. I hope it's not going to be a continuous issue, but it doesn't necessarily sound like it will be.

The defense is going to have to learn on the job, unfortunately the NFL is not a developmental league. Going into week one I fully expect the defense to give up 20-25 points, hopefully the offense scores more. The overall talent level is decent, but the sum is not greater the sum of the parts. A work in progress to be sure.

Also predict, less actiion for Spikes in Foxboro than at Gainesville.

Have a feeling that the D is gonna have to force a turnover or two, or ST is going to have to have some long runbacks ( a td would be nice) for Pats to eek out a win vs Bungles.

Hope I'm wrong :)

Do you see Mayo making any plays? He was the 10th overall pick !

I'm not sure why you think Spikes will see less action here than at The Swamp. He's penciled in as the starting SILB next to Mayo for this team. As for the blown assignments, it happens when you're starting an extremely young defense. However, I expect better from Mayo. If he's still thinking instead of reacting, then something's wrong. This is now going to be his third year in the system.

I also think that Brace starting at LDE will help the run defense on that side. Gerard Warren was pretty much moved wherever the RT wanted to move him. He's not much more visible in the passing game either.

Think he meant "action" in the double entendre sort of way...

With that being said, this D was very vanilla last night.. the goal was to give a lot of folks face time, see how they did and to get out without significant injury...

It is a work in progress...

The D has been very vanilla the last 2 weeks. Of course, the flip side is that so have the offensive plays of the Rams and Giants.

That's why I've sorta learned to keep my mouth shut until a reasonable amount of performance has been demonstrated.

Exactly! Anytime I heard his name mentioned it reminded me to grab a cold one.:D The way I see it...the more negative talk about this young defense and the lack of leadership, the better. Seems like a little motivation and swagger wouldn't hurt this team any.

This is what the gaints did

they flexed boss out , in game time sanders/chung/merriweather will run down and take him leaving tully to rush.

but in vanilla base defence tully followed boss. Now the gaints took our best pass rusher out and also tully is not going to cover boss.
now with tully on boss spikes and mayo pretty much played the tradinal ILB position.
simple scheme. In game time a safety will come down and we will be on cover 1. we played cover 2 all night.

The rams actually did something similar too , everytime the defence lined up a new formation they flexed the TE , resetting our defence to base cover 2.
again something that in a game hopefully will not happen. we saw too much of this crap when guyton was the mike[not his fault he was never trained as a mike]

Indeed. I had the impression that Coach wasn't interested so much in winning, or anything extraordinary as far as defensive schemes go. To my mind, he wanted to see how certain folks reacted in certain positions and circumstances, and the best way to do that is to use the same cover-2 defense.

By using the same defense over and over, it gives you a solid framework to see how each individual player will perform in a similar situation to everyone else. With the cutdowns starting on Saturday, that's (to my mind) important in evaluating all those players on the bubble.

I think that we will all be pleasantly surprised come the 12th.

Respects,

Actually, that's pretty much what I'm asking. I don't really understand schemes very well, so I was wondering if it was scheme or sucking.

Safeties helping out the young CB's + LB's that are not good at covering + no push up front = soft spot in the middle of the defense

That's a good point. I am still concerned that Mayo and especially Spikes are too prone to being sucked up to the line by play-action. The underneath passes have been easy picking all pre-season. If BB puts the Pats in Cover2 to protect our young secondary, this will be ugly. Hopefully, he's willing to take a chance and bring up a safety, since that will also help the running game, although Butler might go for a 15-yard cushion next week in that case.
