Breer final roster prediction

I can maybe see Ohrnberger and Murrell not making it, but I have a much harder time seeing Wheatley and McKenzie off the 53.

OFFENSIVE LINE (9)
C/G Dan Connolly
C Dan Koppen
C/G Ted Larsen
OT Mark LeVoir
OT Matt Light
G Stephen Neal
G/OT Quinn Ojinnaka*
OT Sebastian Vollmer
G/C Ryan Wendell

Larsen has looked played pretty poorly thus far. I'd be surprised if he makes the cut.

DEFENSIVE LINE (7)
DL Ron Brace
DE Brandon Deaderick
DE Damione Lewis
DE Gerard Warren
DL Myron Pryor
NT Vince Wilfork
DE Mike Wright

No arguments here, although I thought Daryl Richard looked pretty good in the limited action he saw. Hopefully he'll make the PS.

I'll wait until after the final exhibition game before worrying about cutdowns to the final 53. We're still waiting on the first round of cuts, and injury maneuvers could very well impact the roster between now and September 4th.

Having said that, nothing I've seen would have me cutting McKenzie or Wheatley, where there are lesser players at their positions that I would look to cut first.

McKenzie and Wheatley not making it would infuriate me. Eric Alexander does not bring enough to the table -- and hasn't, for years -- to justify giving up on a redshirt rookie like McKenzie or a rising rotation guy like Wheatley. And Wilhite staying over Wheatley is short-sighted, imo. We need as many quality corners as we can get. I'd rather keep both.

Man, if McKenzie can't beat Alexander, that would be a disappointment. Even if you consider special teams.

Sergio Brown would be a nice surprise. he seemed to be doing well, but I believe Reiss's film breakdown showed a series of mistakes by him last game.

Nice post, thanks for the links !

Yeah if they cut McKenzie and/or Wheatley that would suck. It wouldn't be as big a deal but Murrell might be better than any other OLB on the roster during the preseason, why cut him when you're going to need a surprise performance from an OLB on the roster in order to contend.

His list is pretty good but I see Tyrone instead of Aiken and murrel instead of Sergio, also could see extra DL or OL being kept over Eric and woods

Edit: and wheatly stays, at the very least instead of Arrington or wilhite

Needs to Go
BJGE - Nothing against him but a #5 RB better be a ST guy. He needs to be #4 or waive buh-bye.
Larsen - I'm a Larsen fan from NCSU, but even I admit he has looked like bantha pudu. PS with Welch.
Lewis - If he isn't clearly ahead of Deaderick (and I'm not sure he is) then he isn't a gameday active 45 guy.
Alexander - Not a stud on ST anymore. Can't trust him to take regular snaps.
Wilhite - Tips for lowering blood pressure: Exercise, cut back on sodium and lose weight (Wilhite's 185 lbs. should do it)
Sanders - Being passed on the depth chart like my grandmother on the freeway

Needs to Stay
Ohrnberger - Has run a little with the 1's and didn't seem out of place.
Richard - Showed potential and hopefully won't need to be active much this year.
McKenzie - Has the heart and desire, but needs more time to develop.
Wheatley - If he is healthy enough, has CB upside and ST skills.
Murrell - ST skills and flashed a little when given regular snaps.
Keep one spot open to sign someone from the cut pool.

The only person who has passed Sanders on the Depth Chart is Chung. And that's a good thing. But you need to remember that McGowan is not that great a safety and proved it the 2nd half of last year. Without Sanders coming in to replace McGowan as the starter last year, the secondary never calms down and the Pats probably miss the play-offs.

Indeed. Anyone who thinks Sanders is out is, to borrow from Patspsycho, sniffing glue.

Murrell looked good against the run and rushing the passer, but his biggest problem is his ability to read pass and drop into coverage. He is always taking his first step in and then getting caught. Unless he is blitzing or is 100% sure he is reading run pre-snap his first steps should be backwards. It is a lot easier to come forward and play the run than it is to step forward, read pass, and drop back regaining the yard or two lost to moving forward and recovering to the proper depth on the drop. That half of a second is usually the difference between a covered and an uncovered receiver.

With that said he has looked better than Burgess. I say keep him.

McKenzie stays. That's just silly. I expect Alexander wil finally hit the road, but I wouldn't be suprised if Green-Ellis is the odd man out.

Brown is PS material. Arrington and McCourty can play gunner, as can Price, if need be. Brown won't get picked up elsewhere, and he can develop and serve as depth, if somebody gets IR'd during the season.

Wheatley's injury could put him on IR or get him cut with hopes of a PS landing, but I would be sad to see him go. Depends on how much manpower Bill thinks we'll have in the secondary for week 1. Bodden, Butler, McCourty, Chung, Merriweather, and Sanders could be the dime unit against Cinci's revamped receiving corps, but somebody needs to provide depth. Wheatley, Arrington, and McGowan are all out with injuries at the moment. Until one of them gets onto the field, Wilhite is looking like the guy who gets the job. (Even if Arrington get back, Wilhite is on the inside track for a job in week 1.) That's just the way it works. Get on the field, get in position, make plays - in that order. That's the job description. Wheatley has looked good, but he's not doing his job at the moment.

Murrell is an interesting case. He looks passable at OLB and can play ST. He got Alexander's reps last week. Still, one or two linebackers need to go. We won't carry 11 (counting Burgess). This will be the most interesting position come next Saturday.

Larsen is a reach. He's got potential, but he's a game day inactive for a while. More than one prospect has to get exposed to waivers, whether it's him, Deaderick, Bussey, or Wheatley. I'm 50:50 on whether Larsen or OBurger is the 9th OL on the 53. OBurger is better now, but maybe Dante likes Larsen more over the long haul. Stashing a prospect here means less depth at DB and/or cutting a ST regular.

Of course, the last cut will wait until after week 1, when Ojinnaka's suspension has been served. That may give another week for Wheatley to heal up, or for Bill to work out a trade of an excess LB or OL.

Is it Thursday yet?
