We know Polian and Peyton are whining about the new umpire placement rule because they think it will hurt their offense. Manning even said they wouldn't have been able to come back against the Patriots in the '4th and 2' game if the rule had been in effect last year.

Instead of whining, we adapt. How do you think the new rule will help our offense, and how do you think it will help our defense?

We like to substitute on d and o so it should help us. You have to wait for that guy to get in place every down.

If the Rams game was any indication you can get away with a lot more holding on the OL and a few more holds downfield. I don't think it will hurt our hurry up or anyone elses nearly as much as it will Mannings. We run no huddle selectively, and not at the frenetic pace Manning employs. And at the end of halves two minute rules will revert. Will be tougher to get a play off in a questionable call situation, but half the time they get the flag in at the last second or the play is so disorganized it amounts in a wasted down. You can still run your no huddle, it's just going to be tougher to run a quick snap no huddle, which is Manning's thing far more than Brady's.

The unintended consequence of the new rule has been to slow offenses down (which helps the defense). Now it's true that the new rule will not affect most teams since most teams do not run a hurry up offense as part of their normal scheme. For example, there is no need for the Lions or the Texans to make any adjustments since they don't run the hurry up.

But teams like that Patriots, and yes even the Colts, do. Those are the teams that are going to be hurt by the new rule. I won't be surprised to see some tweaking in the near future because the league will not want to slow down the pace of the game. I just hope they figure it out by the 9th because if this new rule impacts a game that actually means something, all heck will break loose.

It can help us in that our coaching staff was perfectly aware of the rule and that it could dramatically impact the offense. Because of this commitment to being well-prepared and detail-oriented, they brought in officials at the start of training camp to go over the rule and to describe to the coaches and players just how it would be called.

So the Patriots were proactive and adapted, changing their approach so that they would be in compliance with minimal effect, even though they are probably among the top 5 offenses in frequency of running the no-huddle.

The Colts, in contrast, apparently did nothing and were unaware that they would be affected. When it became clear, they whined and moaned very loudly.

Rewarding unprepared teams at this late stage, saying "NEVERMIND!" would be a detriment to those that were prepared for this, even when it meant making some real changes in approach. The unprepared teams suffer disproportionately, and that would be to our advantage.

Every team does this - in fact I think the NFL mandates it.

I think the rule is well intentioned and should be kept in some form; it just needs some tweaking. Fortunately, it seems momentum is gaining to do just that.
