Brady: We are all playing Thursday Night

Deja Vu

Didn't the Pats once before against the Giants start every starter in a game that they did not need to have them play in?

Oh,Yeah it was that MoFo :enranged: 2007 season

I was a litle strong in my commentary. Pre-season does have SOME value. But for vets that know the system, are in great shape, why bother? i'm sure BB has a million reasons.

I personally don't think they have much to gain playing against the opponents' bottom roster, so I am for them not playing as well. But there is something to be said for team cohesion that is beyond each individual's comfort in the system. For example, Brady playing with Tate may not help Brady but it might help Tate, and thus the team in the long run.

Nice, so BB has at least once deemed it helpful to play his QB at least a little bit in the 4th game. We'll see if he feels like that again this year, he may only find it useful to play the young defense together.

Ageed on that point. Tate needs all the reps he can get in his offense and vs even vanilla defenses. With that said, I still want TB home with Gisele watching the kid.

In skimming the final pre-season game logs, guys who have missed a significant amount of time in the preseason like Matt Light have played. On D a good chunk of starters have played the first qtr or 1/2.

There is absolutely no need for us to play Brady, Moss, and Welker. They are fine. The starting defense might be another story...

Houston game January of 2010 says its ******ed to start Welker or any of these key players,I still think it was downright stupid of Belichick to have did what he did in that game,a game that was nothing like the 2007 Giants game where they at least were trying to get to 16-0,Belichick does not do an extreme amount of dumb ass things but playing Welker that game was definately right at the top of them.

...One mistake of severe injury to a big cog on offense against the Giants and the season could be over quickly

If the players who start are not ready for real action in week 1 after all of preseason and camp that they MUST play in the last pre-week,then this team is in more trouble than I thought

Well since single examples are enough proof for anything, then the Colts prove that you should never rest your guys if you want to win ;)

Injuries suck, injuries happen, just accept it and hope for the best.

I don't want an injury to occur to the starting defense. But, outside of a couple of guys, they need work. I don't necessarily agree with playing the starters, but if it must be done then I hope it's the defense. There's no need to put the franchise quarterback out there and two of our top receivers out there as well in a needless preseason game.

Yep, lots of players on D who are rooks, new to the system or very young players. They need it. Everyone but VW, Bodden, TBC and those who are dinged up like BW are exempt.

I'm 50/50 on Mayo as IMO his performance has been mixed.

I'd play them for a quarter, otherwise they won't have played in a game for 2 1/2 weeks when the season starts and we're going back to that stadium for Week 2 and it will do well for our passing game to have thrown the ball around some there.

We'll have to agree to disagree. They'll get the chance to throw the ball around plenty in practice to get ready for the Bengals game. Brady should get plenty of work in during these practices and in the Bengals game to prepare for Jets.

I'm not a fan of resting players for too long. We might as well have not played them at all in preseason. It's just not worth the risk . . . look at Avery. Sh!t happens, that play could have just as easily happened in practice. I want a comfort level of game conditions Week 1 and especially in the new stadium Week 2.

Agreed, if the Giants are resting their starters it's pretty pointless to have Brady and co. going against 2nd stringers. MAYBE if the Giants put their starting defense in, a drive or two I could see.

That's not a very strong counterpoint. The first three preseason games are essential for playing all of your starters because of the new faces and gameplans which teams have to work with. The offense has gotten a few new wrinkles in it thanks to both of those aspects. The defense is seeing the same thing now that BB is in charge with Matt Patricia. Those gameplans have been installed and Brady has gotten to work with his new weapons. He looks great and looks to be in midseason form already. Welker is recovering from a SERIOUS injury and looks great as well. Moss is our best receiver and #1 weapon. I don't see any reason why the starting offense needs to be out there at all. The defense, on the other hand, looked pretty bad outside of a few guys the other night. If any unit MUST see starting time to work the kinks out, it's them.

And having the second string offense out there increases the likelihood that the defense will get a LOT of practice, although it might be tough to top the 44 minutes they got last week.

It's as strong as you want it to be I guess. Players get better by playing. Welker has had maybe a quarter's worth of snaps all preseason. Maroney and Taylor have played little. Brady's on field relationship with Tate, Crumpler, Gronk, Hernandez and Price is in it's infancy. The chance of injury is there but it's small.

Like I said, it might be better for us to just agree to disagree. :)

It's not black and white like that. The 4th preseason game is equally as meaningless as games 1, 2 and 3. Although I agree, I rather get other guys playing time.

If we're going to get into technicalities, then all preseason games are useless. However, the fourth is commonly known as the most useless. The first three games are important for, as I said, installing new game plans, formations, and getting used to new faces. By the time the fourth one rolls around, coaches typically hold out their starters because they've been acclimated to these things already and would much rather give the youngsters and the fringe guys the time to show what they can in order to make the team.

But we do agree on getting other guys playing time. Personally, I don't think that getting work in for Brady, Welker, and Moss to avoid a little rust is worth the risk of season ending injury to any one of the three in what will be the most meaningless game of the entire season.

Brady's on field relationship with Tate, Crumpler, Gronk, Hernandez and Price is in it's infancy.

Maybe they can offset that with a strong relationship in the showers?
