If Coach is that steamed about last Thursday (and he should be), then maybe Eli ought to consider having and extra set of stitches put in his head as insurance.....
BB is obviously disappointed with the effort he saw last Thursday night. The fact that he told them to be ready to play this coming Thursday night is of no surprise to me either. I just hope we don't sustain an injury to any one of our starters.
Showing a great effort on the 4th pre-season game does not directly translate to ensuring that the team is ready for Game 1?
Let's look at the games.
2009- Slept vs Buff. Barely won
2008- Brady got hurt. Throwing that game out. However w/ Cassell getting the reps, I'd like to think it helped him
2007- White washed the Jets
2006-Slept vs Buff. Barely won
2005-Sloppy vs OAK. Did enough to win.
2004-Great game vs Colts. 27-24
2003-Awful vs Buff. 31-0
2002-Great mon nite vs PITT
2001-Auful vs Cinci.
2000- Auful vs TB
Great games: 3
Sloppy & Losses: 6
I say rest 'em.
Call me cynical but maybe BB wanted a game like that (hence the defensive game plan with a soft zone versus bumping at the LOS of the two previous games) to prevent the team from getting overconfident going into the regular season. This gives him a reason to bp&m (b*tch, p*ss and moan) and get them motivated for Cinn, NYJ et al......
Teams generally don't play their starters in the 4th game, so this breakdown doesn't tell us anything one way or the other.
If BB feels the gain is greater than the injury risk, then he'll play them. BTW I think fans are generally over-the-top way too scared of injuries.
BB HAS played the starters in the last pre-season game many times so there is a precident.
My assertion is that it doesn't mean a damn thing. For any veteran in the league more than 3 years or with the same team/system 3 years, pre-season is a colossal waste of time and completely unnessary.

Right, the thing with injuries are - they are going to happen. They are unavoidable in the sport - so you cannot deprive your team of valuable experience in the hopes of avoiding it. Would Brady's injury have been any more/less horrifying had it happened in a pre-season game? These guys are at a risk for injury every day - with every practice. It's the nature of the sport.
I don't know whether or not it's always a colossal waste of time or not, but my point was there is simply not enough evidence either way. Of course NFL coaches have consistently deemed it better use for the backend of their roster.
I also do not believe Brady has ever played the 4th preseason game? Maybe 2001
You want to avoid the Tippett/Veris/Lippett situation.
That's why you avoid needless risk in meaningless situations. You want to avoid the Tippett/Veris/Lippett situation.
