Tom Terrific has said they are all playing Thursday night.

Bill must have steam coming out of his ears still after the Rams game.

Technically, he said Belichick told them all to be ready to play. He didn't say they were playing, one way or the other.

Well now, this ought to be fun. If Coach is that steamed about last Thursday (and he should be), then maybe Eli ought to consider having and extra set of stitches put in his head as insurance..... :D

:rofl::rofl:
Good one!

Obviously this post is open for translation...but I would bet that the starters will be seeing some time.

I would play the starters for at least 2 or three series...

BB is obviously disappointed with the effort he saw last Thursday night. The fact that he told them to be ready to play this coming Thursday night is of no surprise to me either. I just hope we don't sustain an injury to any one of our starters.

I hate the last preseason game. :bricks:

Bill always tells them they should all be ready to play. This week he really needs to see if they come prepared. It's a fine line between risking injury, because they are football players after all, and making sure you're team is actually prepared for the regular season. I think the starters would have played a series either way because of the 10 day lag time. I think how many series they play this week depends on the level of intensity, effort and focus he sees early on.

If Brady, Moss, Welker or Wilfork start out on the field, someone needs to tranq-dart BB immediately so that O'Brien can get them out of there before it's too late.

Showing a great effort on the 4th pre-season game does not directly translate to ensuring that the team is ready for Game 1?

Let's look at the games.

2009- Slept vs Buff. Barely won
2008- Brady got hurt. Throwing that game out. However w/ Cassell getting the reps, I'd like to think it helped him
2007- White washed the Jets
2006-Slept vs Buff. Barely won
2005-Sloppy vs OAK. Did enough to win.
2004-Great game vs Colts. 27-24
2003-Awful vs Buff. 31-0
2002-Great mon nite vs PITT
2001-Auful vs Cinci.
2000- Auful vs TB

Great games: 3
Sloppy & Losses: 6

I say rest 'em.

Call me cynical but maybe BB wanted a game like that (hence the defensive game plan with a soft zone versus bumping at the LOS of the two previous games) to prevent the team from getting overconfident going into the regular season. This gives him a reason to bp&m (b*tch, p*ss and moan) and get them motivated for Cinn, NYJ et al......

Teams generally don't play their starters in the 4th game, so this breakdown doesn't tell us anything one way or the other.

If BB feels the gain is greater than the injury risk, then he'll play them. BTW I think fans are generally over-the-top way too scared of injuries.

I suppose it's possible. To me, though, it just looked like they were dragging ass.

BB HAS played the starters in the last pre-season game many times so there is a precident.

My assertion is that it doesn't mean a damn thing. For any veteran in the league more than 3 years or with the same team/system 3 years, pre-season is a colossal waste of time and completely unnessary.

I don't know whether or not it's always a colossal waste of time or not, but my point was there is simply not enough evidence either way. Of course NFL coaches have consistently deemed it better use for the backend of their roster.

I also do not believe Brady has ever played the 4th preseason game? Maybe 2001

Right, the thing with injuries are - they are going to happen. They are unavoidable in the sport - so you cannot deprive your team of valuable experience in the hopes of avoiding it. Would Brady's injury have been any more/less horrifying had it happened in a pre-season game? These guys are at a risk for injury every day - with every practice. It's the nature of the sport.

That's why you avoid needless risk in meaningless situations. You want to avoid the Tippett/Veris/Lippett situation.

I was a litle strong in my commentary. Pre-season does have SOME value. But for vets that know the system, are in great shape, why bother? i'm sure BB has a million reasons.

I had to look it up....2003.

You want to avoid the Tippett/Veris/Lippett situation.

...and it is that sole reason why I HATE pre-season. A scar from my teenage years that I have never recovered from. :D

You assume that avoiding injury in a "meaningless" situation excludes one from being injured in a meaningful situation. Desperately trying to avoid injuries in "meaningless" situations is nothing more than appeasing the fans' hindsight mentality.

I mean obviously you don't want to put anyone in a risky situation when there is nothing to gain, but I disagree with all the fear about playing NFL players -only- in meaningful situations. The 4th game has little difference from the 1st game other than the way that NFL coaches historically use it with regards to how "meaningful" the situations are.
