I know some can't stand Florio (personally I enjoy PFT and think Florio knows his football), but for what it's worth he predicts that the Jets will be on the outside looking in at the Patriots in the playoffs.

During the first half of Saturday night's preseason game between the Cowboys and the Texans, CBS analyst Phil Simms offered up his picks for the 2010 playoff field. In the AFC, he selected the same six who made it a year ago: the Jets, Bengals, Colts, Chargers, Patriots, and Ravens.

I'm not knocking Simms. I applied a similar approach in my picks for the PFT Season Preview magazine. In the NFC, my six-team field matches Simms'. In the AFC, I dropped the Bengals and the Jets and included the Texans and the Dolphins.

I guess he's not all that impressed with Rex the Hutt Ryan's bravado

Of course, let's not kid ourselves. Two things Florio loves to do is rile up Patriots and Jets fans, for the sole purpose of driving hits on his website up. In this case he's doing that AND hawking his NFL Preview Magazine... what better way to do it by making just this sort of prediction. Still, he could have easilly made the prediction go the other way, and didn't - giving the Pats the thumbs up instead of the Jets.

This is pretty much what Florio has done for a long time now. Whatever the general consensus is, he'll take the opposite position. It results in a huge debate - which is the whole intent as that is what drives the number of web hits and ad revenue.

It's a brilliant business plan but I would not give most anything he says, such as this, anything more than an indifferent shrug of my shoulders. That applies to anything past, present or future, as well as anything positive or negative about the Pats or any other NFL team.

His comments about the CBA negotiations are well worth reading, but in my opinion just about everything else has become nothing more than a launching pad for trolls that can't wait to disparage a rival.

Florio may know football but he failed his statistics class. Picking the same teams only increases your chances of "getting it right" if you pick teams at random. If you actually try to get it right, you should be able to guess more than 2 or 3.

For instance, Steelers and Chargers are in, I bet, because of division dynamics. Ravens, Patriots and Colts are likely. You're 6th team is a wild card.

I bet my guesses are better than Phil's guesses that include the Jets and Bengals.

Florio's explanation about picking the wrong 3 makes no sense statistically speaking.

Predictions are like a**holes....

Everybody has one....:D

I am really surprised why so many automatically include the Colts. Their division may be the toughest in the AFC this season. I look for both Houston and Tennesse to pass the Colts in the standings and dont count out the Jags either. They will knock off a few of their division rivals, too.

Colts could finish anywhere from first to last in that division. I look for them not to make it to the post season.

right now i have a hard time finding 6 teams in the NFL that are better then the colts more less the AFC they are a playoff team and maybe even the #1 seed

I wouldn't bet on Gary Kubiak beating the Colts in the division anytime soon. Actually I wouldn't bet on Gary Kubiak beating anyone at this point.

The Titans will be better, but I don't think they're good enough to de-throne the Colts.

The only way I could see the Colts not making the play-offs is due to that Super Bowl loser's "curse" that people talk about, and I wouldn't bet on it in that division.

And if you want to talk about the AFC's toughest division, you can start with the AFC East and North.

I think people are beginning to backlash against all the Jets off season hype. I've seen more and more predictions recently calling the Jets to miss the playoffs.

Me, I see them in the hunt for the 6th seed. I think the Pats, Baltimore, Indy and San Diego are near mortal locks to win their divisions. I see Pittsburgh as an obvious favorite in the wild card chase (even without Ben for 4 games they can probably pull off 2-2 and their schedule finishes light).

That leaves, in my estimation, the Jets, Miami, Cincinnati, Houston and Tennessee all jockeying for the final spot. My take is that the Jets are the best of this group of 5 by virtue of their defense, but not by much. It should be a very tight finish. I anticipate 3-4 teams tied at 9-7.

"It's only pre-season," but Houston seems to have done pretty well last night.

In fairness to Florio, he had to make his predictions for his magazine several months ago. He isn't opposed to talking out of both sides of his mouth (he has already said that he has changed his mind and is giving the division to the Dolphins although after the preseason, he might change that again), but I don't see anything wrong here.

As for the Colts, I am done predicting they will fall from grace. Every year I do it, the win their first 10-13 games. This year looks like the best year to predict it since their o-line is in shambles, the new rule on where the ref stands slows down their game, and their offense and running game look to be as bad as they have been any year under Manning. Even so, as long as Manning is under center, you have to assume they will win the AFC South.

Wishful thinking my friend. Many predicted the Colts demise before the season last year and they should have been 16-0. I think we'll see the same team this year. I'm not saying they'll go undefeated, but we'll see a very good Colts team. Many of their really good players will be coming back from injury and that alone makes them a much better team.

Houston is rising. The Texans will be good, but not good enough to beat the Colts. The Jags are a terrible team that will most-likely finish below .500. The Colts, I feel, should emerge as the #1 seed in the AFC.

Considering we've made the playoffs in seven of the last ten seasons and one of the seasons we didn't, we ended up going 11-5 with Brady out the entire year, I wouldn't say that Florio is making any sort of a logical leap here.

Sundays in late August are torturous tests of patience and endurance for me. Kontra, I can't friggin' take it much longer. I'm ravenously salivating for some smach mouth footbawl. Oh, but nooooo. I'm stuck with Tiger out of contention on C.B.S., The Little League World Series on A.B.C. (which is cool, but come on now), and god knows what else around the dial.

Kontra, I order you to take up the slack and happily fill up my otherwise empty Sunday feelings and do your best to amuse me over here between the hours of 1 'till 7.

I Thank You,
Pewsterbaby/Brookyln Matt

Just kidding.

"smach mouth"? Whoa, that's 1/3 of the way to one hella Freudian Slip.

Sorry 'bout that.

At least Tiger was in the top three for a little bit. :bricks:

i will believe it when it happens. this hs been said so many times every yr. When teams maybe evenly matched, take the team with the best QB and thats where colts suceed.

Kontra, at least your meticulously informative last post taking Wolfpack to task about everything under the sun 'cept for the kitchen sink was good Sunday entertainment. I saw it at the bottom of the Polian & Manning thread. Yeah, but the problem was, after I'd finished reading it, I got all bored again and said,"Damn. That Sunday footbawl enjoyment buzz didn't last very long. Kontra would havta keep posting all day long to pacify me. Oh, I give up."

That Wolfpack thing was reminiscent of the one you had a few weeks ago with Andy Johnson.

Oh, and thanks to you, I've now learned what "mea culpa" means.

Gee Kontra, saying "mea culpa" is a pretty tactful way to make one's self look intelligent and well educated while simultaneously admitting to a mistake. ima havta put "mea culpa" into my vocab too.

Well, ima go watch paint dry or grass grow on this awful non-football Sunday er sumpthin'.
Laters, homeslice.

1. Florio will say whatever he has to say to get pageviews. I wouldn't read anything more into this.

2. Pewster's obsession with kontra is crossing the line into straight-up creepy.
