Steve Burton's Observation

Played a round at Shining Rock In Northbridge yesterday and ran into Steve Burton at the turn.

Had a quick chat regarding Thursday night's game and said that he hasn't seen BB as PO'ed during and after a game in a LONG time.

I asked him if there was anything outside of the Zo interview at the 1/2 or the post-game presser that stuck out and he said, "lotta colorful metaphors in the locker room".

Not really surprising but I thought SB's perspective was interesting as he's been pretty close to the team during the BB era and has had good access.

Shoulda been because his team played poorly, displayed a lack of energy, had several stupid drive extending penalties, celebrated meaningless plays before stoping the enemy on 3rd down, displayed no concern on the sidelines for the vicious thrashing that the D was experiencing on the field while making another inexperienced QB look like a HOF lock.

Reflecting on thursday night it reminded me of how the pats played the Ravens in their last real game, in a sleep walking funk.

I think that pretty much narrows it down.

Sounds like the infusion of youth needs some discipline and focus. Time for the leadership in the locker room to right the ship. BB can only do so much as far as preparing these new guys to play....he's already said it's partly coaching, but that's just to take heat off the guys actually screwing up.

Let's see how much sunk in when they play the Giants....

There was a huge difference in their energy from this game to the first 2. HUGE.

It was almost as though they thought, "This is a preseason game at home against the worst team in the league. We just need to show up and we'll win." Glad they got a wake up call.

There are certain lessons that young players need to learn. One of those lessons is that ANY team is capable of EMBARRASSING any other team in this league.

Hope they managed to learn it from a preseason game so they don't have to get trounced in a game that counts to get the message.

Agreed but too many players on D acted as if being embarrased was of no concern. I REALLY miss the vet winning is everything attitude leadership that retired from our D. Wilfie can't do it alone.

Agreed. I'm going to watch the game because I need to feed my football jones. Other than that, though, I'm just hoping it's interesting and that the team doesn't suffer any injuries, especially to someone we might be planning on keeping.

Couldn't agree more. What this defense needs are leaders. Compared to the SB years, they have exactly.......

None.


And no, our overrated Ellis-Hobbs-style-celebrating-when-you-don't-do-your-job-but-the-other-team-messes-up FS doesn't qualify as a true leader, and I doubt he ever will.

I'd expect the first unit D to play one series. If they get Gints O off field quickly, I'd be very happy....If Gints drive 60+ yds fr a score, I'd be concerned.

Get the backups some experience and see how the bubble players perform....

Yes, yes, yes. And that is worrying. I am not going to jump off the bus, or kick the dog, but the lack of discipline and aggression is very concerning. So many rookies or near-rookies that I think it will be a fun season but we really need 1 or 2 more years to go back to the SB. We really need a DE, an OLB and a RB.

Unsure, Tunescribe. I took it as that BB ripped the team a new one at 1/2 time and briefly after the game.

That's a good point.

However, the Giants can run the ball, they have a couple of beasts back there, and Manning's banged up. Meanwhile, this is a young D with 4 to 6 new starters, and although they do need to avoid more injuries, they also need reps. We might see the 1s playing for a while, to cycle through the defensive rotation one or two times, to let them train together against the run, and as punishment for last week's display of lassitude.

I could see BB giving them more time on the field than is usual, maybe even most of the first half, this Thursday, especially if he isn't satisfied with their work this week.

I do not like our D one bit. Every time I see Meriweather strutting around and talking smack after he tackles someone, I want to puke. He needs to realize he is not Rodney Harrison. Rodney Harrison has 3 super bowl rings. These young guys have accomplished absolutely zero and they need to eat some "humble pie". We, as fans, got so spoiled with likes of Tedy, Troy, Rodney, Willie, etc.
These deep character guys had an inner toughness that these young punks could only dream of. Perhaps, one day, they will grow up and realize what it takes to win it all in this league. Until then, expect to see quality teams light up this D on a regular basis.

Funny sideline incident. Brady comes off the field on 4th down, about a foot short of the 1st down. Standing next to the Croatian Warlord, Tommy Boy is wagging his tail and holding his hands a foot apart, no not describing the fish that got away but talking to Bill about just how close to 1st down they were, Bill staring straight ahead looks disgusted and dismisses Brady with some kinda snide remark and Brady slinks away. Billy Boy was NOT happy with his offense there.
