Hyperbole - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I know this is a message board intended for people to spout their unabashed opinions (as I am doing now), but in this one man's humble opinion the hyperbole and knee jerk reactions thrown around on this board turn Patsfans.com into a morass of ******ed commentary.

For example:

3 weeks ago, Brace was a fat ass B-U-S-T, now after one good bull-rush on a passing down against the Rams the fate of our D-line hangs in the balance of his MRI

Based on one game, 2nd year rookie Darius Butler has gone from a potential 1A corner to a defensive liability

After 3 preseason games in 2010, one of our favorite whipping boys in 2008 and 2009, Terrence Wheatley suddenly "gets it"

In one thread I read, Eric Alexander, a special teams ace since 2006, was described as simply not a good football player

Mike Wright a solid DE SUCKS because he's not Richard Seymour. TBC SUCKS because he's not the second coming of Demarcus Ware. Its not ok to be good at your position as part of an 11 man defense or offense, you're either awesome, or you suck.

Conversely, once a player has reached superstar status (i.e. Brady, Wilfork) it seems they are beyond reproach.

IMO this message board would be a whole lot better if people would refrain from extreme black and white opinions based on one game or one play.

Instead of Eric Alexander is a terrible football player, how about Eric Alexander is a serviceable special teams player, but not someone I'd like to see getting reps at ILB because...(insert thoughtful comment supporting your argument here based on your observations).

Just one man's opinion.

You're totally right and it's been going on on this board for a while. That's what happens when people react before thinking, I guess. I don't get why people can't just enjoy the football season. It should be interesting.

Additionally, the extreme opinions often come with condescention, arrogance or both.

Ah......an opinion about opinions....yours must be the right one

The dirty harlot known as Lauren Thompson?

William Shatner's Asian eyes?

My wife gets like them once a month also. I recommend to just smile and give them a week and they'll be fine.:D

I think for the most part these reactions are the result of lack of perspective.

FWIW the JETS have scored 2 TD's in 18 preseason drives and tonight had their hands full with the backup led Rex Grossman Redskins...

Miami didn't look too impressive against the Falcons, either...

The Colts have issues which is nothing new in the pre season, except for their new coordinators and second year Dungy understudy.

Every team has problems and issues and none of them have all pros at every position. Mediots (and their own egos) whip fans into a frenzy with their prognostications. 90% of the time they are out to lunch. I'll take my chances on the team with Brady and BB running the show, thanks.

Your post was exquisitely crafted, and none would argue with it.

But I think you're overlooking one simple point, which is causing you gratuitous gear grinding, as it once did, myself, before I had an epiphany, and realized a Great Truth:

People are stupid.

Only a fraction of the souls, here and around the world, consistently express themselves in intelligent fashion.

The vast majority...Well...they ain't too bright!! :bricks:

Expecting them to be will only reap frustration and consternation.

Me, I try to focus on the many excellent FootBall minds, hereabouts...and ignore the voluminous debris.

Sometimes, it even works!!

Remember these wise words: If the aggregate state of intellectual debate, hereabouts, fails to meet your standards...simply lower your standards!! :D

You'd make a great pop warner coach or a little league coach. And don't forget to bring the orange slices and Capri Suns.

It's a messageboard for crying out loud!

I sympathize with a lot of what you wrote in your post, but keep in mind that this isn't exactly the Algonquin Round Table-- it's an internet sports messageboard. You're lucky there isn't a p*rn-post requirement before being granted full membership.

Some people are going to react wildly. That doesn't mean everyone or even a majority of people here concur with the more outlandish posts.

What drives me nuts is how conditioned certain posters have become to regard anyone besides them as being idiots and thus are treated that way, even when the tone of the original post is very mild.

Ah......an opinion about opinions....yours must be the right one

Not necessarily the "RIGHT" one, but certainly a helluva lot more logical than some of the BS flying around on this board..

I would think that tempering your opinion by at least attempting to look at the other side of the coin would be a smart thing to do. If you disagree, good.

Does this mean we're not doomed?

I hope so, because I don't know if we are doomed because Brace may be lost for the season, or if we are doomed because we wasted a draft pick on him.

Things change pretty fast around here.

Blow it up.

But seriosuly, the board has been headed in this direction since that damn 1-2 punch of the Super Bowl and Brady's ACL tear. If it's not Brace Sucks it's Butler/Meriweather/Chung/Orhnberger is a Bust or Brady Has Gone Hollywood/Doesn't Care About The Team. And then you get the guys whom think the world is A-OK and our offense will outscore the 2007 offense.

This board used to be chock full of football knowledge, and I felt a lot of times I learned stuff when I read posts on here. Now everything gets to be a pissing contest and most threads die out when someone gets the last insult.

There are valleys and peaks in life. We'll get back to the peak soon.

It's amazing how you have all synchronized your menstrual cycles to happen at the same time. Congatulations to you all.

I'm too old for a menstrual cycle...but I DO wear Depends...:bricks:
