Manning from Aug. 17 on umpire position - NFL Nation Blog - ESPN

Peyton Manning doesn't seem to like how having the umpires behind the offense affects tempo, after his team was twice called for illegal snaps last week.

Some quotes:
I know Bill (Polian) and Jim (Caldwell) are on top of it and evaluating it. ... I am hoping we are willing to adjust some and they are willing to adjust some, too, so we can make it fit. It would be a shame if one team got penalized more than the other with this rule change.

Our philosophy is that we are going to run our offense. We are going to do it the way we have been doing it and hopefully they can make some adjustments.

He does point out that other teams use hurry-up and cites the Patriots as an example, so this affects their offensive tempo.

I agree that this change could hurt the pace of the modern game. But at the same time Manning doesn't get much sympathy from me complaining about the penalties. The fact that an official is now in position to make these calls against the Colts, finally, doesn't strike me as unfair.

I don't disagree completely with Manning, as he does make some valid points. However, I can't bring myself to have sympathy for a guy whining about a rule change when his team is notorious for sending game film to the NFL after every disappointing loss, especially to the Patriots, and getting rules changed. The Colts have probably had more game-saving penalties called in their favor in the past few years against many teams, especially the Patriots, than any other team in the NFL.

The new rules change hurts the Colts more than probably every other team. They so rely on the no huddle on offense that this new rules change really slows down their game more than most. Kinda love to see a rules change that blows up in Polian's face.

Peyton said:
When the second group, or the third group maybe, ran a quick play I thought the umpire was pretty slow and gave the defense a chance to get set and make their calls.

God forbid the defense gets a chance to get set :bricks:

I know what the Colts have been doing is legal - and I know the Patriots could have done it too - but I hate, for the good of the game, how Manning rushes to the line, winds the clock but snaps the ball if the defense tries to sub. Personally I would like a 10 second window in which the offense can't snap the ball to give the defense a chance to sub. If this accidently accomplishes part of that then that's good with me.

Same here. That's actually what I came into this thread thinking. Though, Manning is right. This will hurt all teams going into a no huddle offense.

I don't care what Manning says or that this might hurt our offense. All I know is that our defense struggles against no-huddle offenses and whatever help our defense can get is fine by me. Because we're gonna need all the help we can get.

If last night is any indication the rules change will hurt more than the Colts, who always got away with a lot of OL holding... It's also one less set eyes of downfield in position to make a call, which means if you get a chump line judge like we had last night you may run out of challenges needlessly and not have any left in the 4th.

There was a notable uptick in calls against the Rams OL in the 2 minute segments of last nights games, and that speaks volumes about what was going unnoticed all evening. They were getting away with some blatent holding out of the gate that was exceedingly clear from the camera's vantage point - which used to be the umpires.

59-24......nice!!!

I think it's important to note that while everyone is calling this a "rule change" it isn't really a rule change. It was never voted on by ownership (rule changes require a 75% majority vote). It is a change implemented by the commissioner and only he can reverse it.

Yes, obviously, the commissioner consulted with others about this repositioning, most notably Mike Pereira (the former head of officiating). And he did get an endorsement from the competition committee. But ultimately he is the one who will have the last word on the positioning.

Could someone please find his (no doubt) very similar quote following the rule "change" regarding downfield contact after the 2004 season?

God forbid the NFL implement a rule that would help the defense

Off the top of my head I seem to recall it went something like "Hahahaha :D hahahaha :rocker: screw you Belichick :woohoo: "

And if memory serves me Bill's comments were along the same lines they always are "It is what it is and it's the same rule for everyone so we'll play to the rule."

Agreed, Manning can shut it. Any rule that is introduced has a chance to benefit or penalize one team more than another. Nobody should understand that more than he should - if it weren't for the DB rules, he'd still be a ringless, worthless choker goober - instead of a one-ringed, worthless choker goober.

Re: Rule Under Review after Manning, Polian Complain

Nice reasoning. It doesnt let them snap the ball so quick that a review cant be done.
Leave it to the Colts to consider closing a loophole as opening a loophole.

Re: Rule Under Review after Manning, Polian Complain

I do enjoy a rule change that screws with the Colts.:D

Re: Rule Under Review after Manning, Polian Complain

Call me crazy, but I think the Colts have a point. If a team wants to run the hurry up, they should be able to do so - and the officiating should not constantly be slowing them down.

Re: Rule Under Review after Manning, Polian Complain

I am going to have to agree with the colts on this one but also I agree that they should shut up about no one likes a complainer.

IMO the rule should be like this....Obviously you have to wait for the ump to spot the ball as before.....Not sure if you had to wait for the ump before (when he lined up on the D side) or not but at least then the QB could see him. Anyway IMO once the ball has been spotted and the ump has stepped back from the line the offense should be allowed to snap even if the ump is in the way he will be in the way of the offense who if they wanted or managed time better would not have him in the way. Problem here is it could leave an ump out of position (but whatever he will have to learn to make calls and pay attention while getting in position).

Re: Rule Under Review after Manning, Polian Complain

The Colts are such whiny little ****bags. I hope the NFL upholds the rule just to give them a big F-U. Let Polian see how it feels to have a rules change negatively impact an aspect of your team.

This, As much as I try to not make things personal, in this case I'll happily make an exception. Anything that gives the Colts a whopping big taste of their own medicine is fine by me. :rocker:
