I'm not panicking over one game - the pass rush has stunk for years. Imagining it not getting any better than last year, yikes that has me panicking!!!

I dig Mankins as a player: tough, snarling, no BS, I'll take eleven of him anyday. But it appears he's done with the Pats, much to my disappointment (although, I can't see giving him nearly $8mil/yr, so maybe I agree with the Pats FO). Realistically, is there a significant pass rushing talent available on team as desperate for a mauler up front as we are for someone who can sack the QB?

Considering the value for a guard is far less than a passrusher, not a great one. We might be able to get a solid back up quality player to an average starter. At best, I think the most the Pats could get is Shawne Merriman if the Chargers didn't guarantee he wouldn't be traded and they want to cut ties with him. You might be able to get a slight upgrade to what we have opposite TBC, but no one of any significance.

Name a passrusher out there that you want and I'll shoot it down. There's just not guys out there that would work out.

Been there and mentioned this Cousin. The 49ers web site mentions a possibility. I would do this in a nano-second because if we can't put pressurize on the Rams QB core we are going to have a long season against the pass elsewhere. They would like to see their Team offer a third rounder and former first rounder and their starting OLB Manny Lawson (good coverage and 6.5 sacks in 2009) who is in a contract issue as well. It would involve a sign and trade on both sides but it is a fair deal.

Here is that post so I don't have to write this again:
"Here is the way I see it. Mankins got what he was worth on the table. His (his agent gets about 3%) agent will get about a quarter million dollars of this new payday if he can get $8m. It is about money with the agent. They are unscrupulous anyway so the difference between $6.5m and $8m is about $50,000 to Mr. Bauer. The Pats should pay him an "honorarium" of that $50k as good will and get this deal done. You think he would ever tell LM?

Seriously, I would trade him. By accident I came upon the 49ers site and it has suggested Manny Lawson and a third rounder for Mankins. I might do that. Lawson is in a squabble there but might be closer to sign.

"Lawson started all 16 games last year for the first time in his career, leading the 49ers with a career-high 6.5 sacks. Since then, San Francisco has extended the contracts of other young players the team feels are key to its future.

Lawson is in the final season of the five-year, $7.5 million deal he signed as the second of San Francisco's two first-round draft picks in 2006. His base salary of $630,000 pays him less than two of the team's other outside linebackers"

He is a more urgent need for the Pats than an OG who thinks he is the best in the game but really had only a fair 2009 the way I saw it. Lawson has been said to be superb in coverage and at 6.5 sacks, he is more the BB type OLB at 6' 5". Seems like a OLB who is just starting to get it. We are still struggling to fill that void....Murrell? Burgess? an injured Cunningham?

But at the end of the day the old issue of the Pats being cheap shows it's ugly head. Signing Mankins might be the best for the Team as a whole in future negotiations with top FAs.

Perhaps trade Mankins and sign Lawson long term might work to still resolve that and we still have a third rounder "to have and to hold"! And Mankins can go back to the fruits and the nuts of good old California and Nancy P."

Is he Demarcus Ware? No. A better option than Merriman? Yes. Burgess looks horrible. Brace played a bit better as far as pressure. I don't think Wilfork had a great game and Wright is a sub and no more. The other two Warren and Lewis you can now see why they were not kept by their 2009 Teams.
I only see one speck of life......the rookie Deadrick. He seems to be getting more reps.

O.K. Shoot down that trade. I would do it though.

Ray Edwards as a pass rusher from Minnesota? Does Minny need two Pro Bowl LG's?

They need CB help, but we don't have a CB good enough to trade.

Let's face it. If the Pats are going to get anyone who might be a big upgrade, they are going to have to give up a high draft pick. I see it as unlikely. Too bad Belichick and Mangini hate each other or the Pats might have been able to get Wimbley.

Still want to see Cunningham on the field before I get too upset anyway.

Maybe we can send Mankins, Maroney, and J. Sanders to Dallas for D. Ware?

If that wouldn't cut it, we could always send a draft pick to re-acquire Watson and add him to that package.

I hope this is your attempt at humor...

I'll try that on Madden :D

I suggest focusing on the travesty that is MLB for the fantasy trade fanboys here. A Mankins trade (problematical in the least because of 'minor' details like no signed tender and the $$$ contract he demands) for an OLB worth having simply aint...gonna...happen.

I like Lawson, but the 9ers have little depth behind him with Ahmad Brooks out, so I'm guessing we'd have to overpay to get him. And he's only gone over 3 sacks once in his career. That's not the sign of a pass-rusher that would solve our problems

Ray Edwards wants to be paid probably more than what we offered Mankins. He held out up until the last minute before signing his tender. And he only got a first-round tender, but no bites. That should say a lot about thoughts that he's an elite pass-rusher like he thinks he is.

Let's ship him to the Raiders for Thomas howard and Darren Mcfadden maybe he can spring his career back wearing the flying elvis and takings hand offs from the greatest qb of all time. Hell Brian hoyer is better than Jason Campbell. What say you?

Thomas Howard would play the same position as Mayo

And you know this for a fact Cousin? Sign and Trade is the key and we all understand that. Fantasy football is B.S. anyway. You got to go with facts. Fact:
Lawson and Mankins want more $.

Mankins lambasted Team owner and Coach.

Guards are more replaceable than pass rushing OLB (even All Pro).

Lawson at 6"5" is a-typical although a little light for a BB OLB, plus he might be a better coverage LB than any on our roster.

He is a former first rounder, young and coming into his own

Plus a third rounder added would be nice (according to their "fantasy" as some call it, football needs in SF not mine).

Let's all agree he is a step up from Burgess, Murrell, and the injured Cunningham.

The theme of this Cousins thread was "What pass rusher can we trade Mankins for?" The response of possible partners or deals(feasible) is always open to conjecture but the responses can still be reasonable. Call it Fantasy football or Madden if you like, but that was not the spirit of this Cousins post.

This is for entertainment and it does not affect anyone's life or livelihood on this site one would hope.

I said this on draft day a few years ago and I will say it again. Mayo is JAG. He makes zero plays.

BB has created this massive problem by failing to draft and develop any OLB's over the past decade. Anybody we trade for now is like putting a band aid on a severed limb.

However for the sake of argument, I would call our old buddy Al Davis and try to steal Quinten Groves from him. (Say for James Sanders) He would need a year in our system to be deprogrammed and taught proper technique, but at least it is a step in the right direction.

haha. I wonder how many lopsided trade scenarios J. Sanders has been mentioned in over the years...
