Ahhh! Somebody better post a correction here. They forgot to add "every major REGULAR SEASON NFL passing record". He's among the worst in the playoffs.

I thought Ben Coates was a lock for 87 but apparently Dwight Clark made one good catch in his career which takes precedence over 10 years of greatest.

Ben Winter Coates belongs on that list.

It's also weird to think about how many good players have shared numbers (22, 80) yet so many bad players shared other numbers (96). You would think this would be an easy list to make

That was my thought exactly. I half-expected to see Randy come up for #81 and was a little surprised to see Tim Brown. I wonder if erroneous media and common perceptions of Randy's work-ethic and dog fakery had an influence in that decision; not to mention the contrast in the careers each of them had with the Raiders.

A lot of Steelers and Cowboys on the list.

You missed Tim, Chad Eaton and Lawyer Milloy, who were also on the list.. Personally, I don't know how some of the players were up for consideration... Joseph Addai? Come on. The guy is above average RB at best.. Buckley? Eli Manning?

I do question some of the rankings like other people do..

Probably when they went to having numbers for particular positions. Which was probably done to make the lives of the officiating crew easier.

Yep, this was around the mid-70s or so, right around the rise of the NFL on TV. I don't know which came first but it probably also made it easier on the fans, too.

I don't know why Randy would get the nod over Tim Brown, even without the baggage Moss has accumulated. Brown played 17 years, finished #2 in receiving yardage and #3 in catches, hardly numbers which can be downplayed.

EDIT: Don't forget Henry Thomas played here a few years, too! #97. Or Keith Byars. #41.

Probably because Moss has only been #81 during his 3 years with the Patriots (#84 with Vikings, 18 with Raiders), and while they've been great years, Tim Brown had a much longer run of greatness while wearing that particular number.

Clark had better stats and won Super Bowls. Coates was not great for 10 years. He had 5 years of great play.
