Roster exempt status - with Mankins?

I hope Mankins never steps on the field in a Patriots uniform again. The Patriots have a bunch of young players now, it would suck for them to get the idea of holding out if Mankins is rewarded a big ass contract at the end of this. He's not even arguably the best guard in the league. Honestly, I just want to see his career get ruined at this point and the Patriots are capable of doing that.

Wish we could get a high first rounder for him like we did Seymour. Good luck, for a OG its probably a 2nd rounder, even after he signs the tender.

Why depend on the media's interpretation of the rules when you can read them yourself?

From the CBA (Article XXXII, Section 4)
"Restricted Players. Any player whose contract has expired and who either (i) has two but less than three Accrued Seasons or (ii) is a Restricted Free Agent pursuant to Article XIX (Veteran Free Agency),Section 2, and who has been given the required tender pursuant to Article XVIII (Veterans With Less Than
Three Accrued Seasons), Section 2, or Article XIX (Veteran Free Agency), Sections 2(b)(i) or (ii), and who has not signed a contract and has not reported to his Club’s pre-season training camp, may be placed on the roster exempt list of his Club under the following conditions:
(i) If the player has not reported at least the day before the Club’s second pre-season game, he may be placed on roster exempt until the day following the Club’s first regular season game.
(ii) If the player has not reported at least the day before the Club’s third pre-season game, he may be placed on roster exempt until the day following the Club’s second regular season game.
(iii) If the player has not reported at least the day before the Club’s fourth pre-season game, he may be placed on roster exempt until the day following the third regular season game scheduled after the date he actually reports.
(iv) Any player who is placed on the roster exempt list of his Club, pursuant to Article XXXII, Section 4(c) shall be entitled to full compensation from his Club for any week in which his Club has a “bye” after the date he reports, but while he is still on the roster exempt list. Thus, any such player may not lose more than three weeks of salary as a result of being placed on the roster exempt list. This agreement shall not affect the number of regular season games for which the player can be placed on the roster exempt list, and thus for which the player may not play for his Club, in accordance with Subsections (i)-(iii) above. Nothing herein shall affect any right or obligation the player or Club otherwise may have concerning compensation to the player.
(v) No player may be placed on roster exempt under this Subsection unless the Club has provided written notice to the player and the NFLPA of its intent to place the player on roster exempt at least five days prior to the Club’s second preseason game. Once such written notice is provided, the Club must place the player on roster exempt in accordance with Subsections (i)-(iii) above.

Re: How did this get five stars before anyone else even looked at it?

But Nut's question still stands. I've read nothing to indicate that the Pats did the paper for a roster exemption. This seems to be a major oversight from the local press if so.

IMO,the local press should have reported on this by now.

They need to read Patsfans!

Now Miguel, get back to your weeding!

My bad, it's raining.

I thought it was, and it was covered on Page 1 that the Pats didn't send a letter because they didn't need to, whereas other teams had players under contract and were in a situation where they had to send the letter to preserve those roster spots.

The other players (Jackson and McNeill) are like Mankins.

So what this boils down to (thanks Miguel) is IF Mankins comes back this season, we have to cut someone immediately.

Well, the team could apply for a roster exception. Whether they'd get it or not, I have no idea.

I believe that is correct. Since Logan is decidely NOT under contract he does not now count towards the forthcoming magic 53. Were he to sign the tender and come back after say 9 games, Pats would need to cut or IR someone fat or useless to put him on the roster.

That sucks because if he plays, Mankins will go through the motions so he wont get hurt. He despises the Pats at this point, so why would he exert himself to help the team?

If he rides the pine, NE just released a player who might have helped them.

The key word is "may". So if the Team doesn't issue the letter and do it, they can bring back the player as soon as he signs and reports.
