I agree ( nice video - I didn't see the draft when he was picked) I was being facetious like Lobel. The frustrating thing about Watson was that he would make 2 plays a year that would be all world. And hundreds of plays that were meh.

Absolutely. I'm not criticizing the play. My point is that he didn't do enough that was memorable as a tight end.

Real nice catch, I wish him well he was a class guy.

However, making a great athletic play running away from coverage doesn't surprise me. The reason we're better off now is all our tight ends will fight for the ball and the YAC (I hope).

My lasting memory of Watson won't be that D play, it will be a touchdown catch he let a 180 pound cornerback wrestle away from him. Don't remember when, though he got out fought for balls often.

See, highlights are great plays made by a player. It's really that simple. Offense, defense, special teams.... they're all plays.

Watson chasing down Bailey was one of the all-time best football plays ever. I'll go to my grave knowing that ball went out the back of the end zone. It's simply physically impossible otherwise.

However, he was a mediocre offensive tight end. Not terrible, simply mediocre. But you get drafted in "the first round" in NE, and if you don't make the HOF by Year 2, you're Dead in NE.

Meanwhile, Gronk & Hernandez will get all the slack in the world due to their draft position. I think they'll actually be better than Watson, but it's funny how that first round label can haunt a guy.

This was the issue with him. I think he had all the talent and gave all the effort that you could ask, but one of his primary jobs was to catch balls in traffic, and he wasn't good at that. That smooth adjustment and toe-tap that Hernandez made last week wasn't in Watson's arsenal, and when you're working in traffic, the ball is seldom thrown right at you. It's high, behind you, or in front of you, and those balls just didn't stick to his hands well enough (at least when he was on the move). Hope the offense in Cleveland agrees with him more.

It's hard for a QB to put up with a receiver who drops easy passes.

There are passes that are hard to catch. It's OK to drop some of those.

There are passes that the receiver makes harder than they need to be. (E.g., thinking a defender is closer than he is, and reacting accordingly, or just about any catch by la-la-la-Ha-I-wasn't-loafing-after-all Moss.) Stuff happens, and every player has the right to decide the fine details of how he plays his position.

Watson's seemed to go beyond that.

Watson had the skills to be top 5 TE in the league; but he was too inconsistent!

As someone said; he made that catch; but how many times did he drop the ball using 2 hands!

He lost trust from players and coaches. And if your QB doesn't trust you; you'll be lucky to get any looks!

Agreed. I watch it now and I still don't expect him to make it. Wish him all the best at Cleveland

Remember opening day 2009 season? Pats would have LOST to the Bills had TE Watson not made two, not one, very good difficult clutch catches deep. Sadly, as typical for Ben he went MIA most of the rest of the season.
