It is pleasant to have to nominate not just one or even two "Surprises" of the 2010 Patriots training camp.
#1) Julian Edelman's progress, into a full time, first string threat.
#2) Terrance Wheatly's return to health and return from the grave. The Patriots now have the pleasant possibility of having not two, nor three, but four, 4, F-O-U-R, first string CBs for their secondary, with a fifth who is still able, but seems over matched in comparison.
#3) Brandon Tate's play as a sophomore, or really a rookie, at WR. He is banishing Holt, to the HOF.
#4) Taylor Price's play at WR. For a small school pick, he is much more advanced than most rookie WRs.
#5) Gerrard Warren signed for less, but has outplayed Damione Lewis. But Lewis is not playing badly, at all. So we add the play of both of the vet, former first round, FA, defensive linemen.
#6) Pat Chung's play has clearly moved him into taking the SS, in-the-box, Safety position, over competent but not starring competition.
#7) Dan Connelly's play at LG. He is showing that he isn't only a scrub reserve, but is he a real starter.
#8) Rich Ohrnberger's play shows we may have the C/G reserve we need.
#9) Brandon Spike's play has made him the undisputed starter at SILB, but that was not really a surprise. UDFA Dane Fletcher's play makes five ILBs.
#10) Wes Welker's rapid return to health is astonishing and surprising.
#11)Grounkowski, Hernadez and Crumpler are talented TEs. Will Tom Brady throw to them?
#12) Logan Mankin's holdout, after Belichick chose to let Seymour go, in order to pay and keep both him and Wilfork is the real surprise, and the only possibly negative one.
#13) With this many positive surprises it is easy to say that Bill Belichick is succeeding in compressing a Five Year rebuilding Plan, into a mere two seasons. Is that so SURPRISING, when you think about it?
A last note that doesn't apply to the Pat's TC expressly. We knew and expected the JESTER's to brag and declare themselves the March Super Bowl Champs; we did not expect every single one of the Mediots to jump aboard their bandwagon. But we also did not expect it all to end so ignominiously, in the very first play, of the very first Preseason game!
