Re: Holt done for season, put on IR

You can't cut a vested veteran who suffers an injury during practice.

thanks for the info, didn't know that!

Too bad for the guy. Liked the signing. Can you imagine the panic here were this IR move announced weeks ago before collective training camp confidence built via Welker's unexpectedly early return, Tate's performance and Edelperson's spectacular game?

Interesting.

When did Holt get banged up?

My guess is, beyond the wear and tear of a great career, he wasn't.

It just became apparent that his skills stood little chance of displacing a promising player off the roster, and there was probably limited interest by both Holt and other teams in having him move on with another team.

In that respect I'm thinking that IR was a nice respectful face saving move in which the Pats take the classy road, decline to cut a player of Holt's caliber, and place him on IR so that he can announce his retirement on his own terms.

Re: Holt done for season, put on IR

why was he put on IR and not cut, if he has only a 1-year contract?

I have some question as to whether Holt is truly injured. It may be that IR was a nice respectful face saving move in which the Pats take the classy road, decline to cut a player of Holt's caliber, and place him on IR so that he can announce his retirement on his own terms.

I believe, but am not certain, that players on IR collect their salary (as opposed to just the signing bonus) as opposed to those who are cut.

If so this is an especially classy move by the Patriots because I think Holt's $1.15 million contract was mostly salary and not bonus.

Moves like that make veterans want to play for Kraft and Belichick, even though there's no guarantee every veteran works out.

EDIT - I guess Holt has a knee injury that will require surgery... so I guess he really is injured, but then again I'm getting my knee scoped in a few days and that's pretty minor surgery.

He will collect his contract I believe.

Re: Holt done for season, put on IR

He will collect his contract. Many contracts have injury clauses, reducing the compensation if there the player is injured.

He will collect his contract I believe.

Wrong. He's having knee surgery. Unless knee surgery is also a face-saving move...

Yeah - just saw that on the later report. So probably legit - but still, I'm having my knee scoped soon and that's surgery but pretty minor... something I could not have done for a few years if I wanted to put it off...

There's a lot of players who might benefit from a scope to clean out their knees but are going to play through the season.

Re: Holt done for season, put on IR

That sucks. Doesn't seem like a lot of depth is left.

Re: Holt done for season, put on IR

????
Our #4 from last year is now our #6.

We have Moss, Welker, Edelman and Aiken back from last year.
Aiken won't get any WR reps since we have SO MUCH DEPTH in Tate and Price.

That sucks. Doesn't seem like a lot of depth is left.

Well no question having surgery done on the knee does indeed save the face from surgery

Re: Holt done for season, put on IR

crap... I expected a lot from him

Re: Holt done for season, put on IR

Good break for the youngsters.....

Now they just have to take advantage of it....

Holt made a great mentor for them....

Re: Holt done for season, put on IR

Too bad.
Hope it's not the end of his career.

First it was guards coming here to end their career. Now it's receivers?

No concerns with WR depth.
Edelman looks like he has fully embraced the 'year two leap.'
Tate looks good.
Price has potential.

Moss-Welker-Edelman-Tate-Price-Aiken: that's fine.
Add in Gronk and Hernandez.
Plenty of receiver depth.

While I agree that it sucks, I'm not too worried about the teams WR depth. How many WR's did you expect them to carry, 7 or 8?

Re: Holt done for season, put on IR

He's finished. The only reason he hasn't been cut is that he's a vet, and prior to the Pats signing him, he was a FA on the market for over 2 months.

Re: Holt done for season, put on IR

I was wondering how they were going to find a way to keep all this talent they had at WR. The decision just got one step easier, I guess.

Re: Holt done for season, put on IR

Let's not forget Crumpler. He had almost as many receptions (27) last year as Watson (29) did.

Too bad.
