Maybe they did and maybe they didn't. There are a lot of what ifs but it sounds like this has been an ongoing problem since 2005 and the solution to the problem is surgery with an expected recovery time of 6 months. The time to make that decision would ideally be after the season is over not in August.
Its the type of injury that at first you think you may have pulled your groin or a leg muscle and the pain comes and goes and its not too bad at first. I have the same injury now going on four years and up to this year it wasnt a problem, now I cant even golf without severe pain so I'm assuming its the same with Ty and its gotten worse. Instead of trying to plug his way through he'll just get it taken care of.
Also its a procedure thats only been done in the last 11 years because there wasnt a way to fix it until someone invented a tool to do the procedure, not many doctors perfom the surgery although I wouldnt think Ty would have a problem finding one of the best to do it for him.
In short he probably thought he could muddle his way through another season but quickly found out the hip had gotten worse. Hobbling with this type of injury will absolutley also put added stress on your knee so once it gets to a cerrtain point its best to just get it done and alleviate any additional problems.
If you had this injury 20 years ago you either tried to play through the pain or if it was too bad you retired.
